  1. Thanks for the advice - order has been placed. Cheers, Nigel
  2. Thanks for the help. I shall probably leave it for now but may get some oil in for future whilst I'm putting the prder in. I have a couple more questions. Q1 - Looking at the ModelSport website there are various brands but it doesn't say how much is in each bottle. So for example if I look at Associated and Schmacher shock oils - is one better than the other, do you get more of one than the other? Q2 - Filter oil. Do I need to get some (this is a used Hyper so it will have been applied already)? How often does it need to be replaced? Cheers, Nigel
  3. Thanks, What do you get with the Hyper 7 in the first place? Is it good quality or should I replace it as soon as possible? Cheers, Nigel
  4. About to order soem parts for my Hyper 7. Thought I would get some shock oil for future use whilst I was putting the order in. I'm new to this so not sure what weight to buy - also checked through the manual and couldn't see any guidnace (though I may have missed it). What should I get - it's just for mucking about down the park etc - nothing serious or competitive. Cheers, Nigel
  5. I'd like to take this. PM sent. Cheers, Nigel
  6. Also when you tighten the heads, you should do so progressively and preferably on the diagonal. In other words, don't tighten one screw fully and then move onto the next. What you want to do is the tighten them all 'finger tight' - then tighten one a little more - then do the same with its diagonal (or opposite) and so on. Repeat the process until you have all the screws nice and equally tight. I have never felt the need to loctite - if you do make sure you use blue rather than red. Sometimes you can tighten the head a little more when the engine is hot. But basically don't go mad - you don't want to shear a bolt. I've also never seen such a problem when the screws have been done up tight. Cheers, Nigel
  7. Interested in knowing condition, age and seeing pics. Also why doe the engine need a new button? Cheers, Nigel
  8. In my opinion, if the 'shop' saw the problem and it was obvious that the engine was nearly new and there was no sign of abuse then he should have rectified the problem or replaced it. A leaking engine being 'normal' because of the high presssure is a nonsense statement. Cheers, Nigel
  9. Thanks for the advice. I'll get the Big Bang stuff - it's easy for me to get as my local store stocks it. Cheers, Nigel
  10. Getting my son a Hyper 7 for his birthday - little more than I was planning to spend but it's what he wants. Anyway, I was think of not bothering about the combo pack and instead put the
  11. Thanks for the help. Being pretty new to this I wonder whether you could explain about the clutch more. The reason I ask is that the HPI MT-2 has a slipper clutch and they make a point of advertising that this prevents damage to the spur gear. So why doesn't the Hyper 7 need one - is it just a better design, or is it down to the fact that MT2 has a weak drive train (read about diffs stripping easily). Cheers, Nigel
  12. Hobao are a bit scant with technical information on their website, and they don't have a downloadable manual that I could find either. So here are a few questions: (i) Does the Hyper 7 have a slipper clutch? (ii) I've read that it comes with a optional holder for rechargeable which is probably not suitable for hump packs. Is this correct and if so, what battery configuration does it need? (iii) Does the battery switch include a charging flylead or would I need to buy and fit a different one? (iv) Are there any weak design areas on the Hyper 7 - worth improve with upgraded parts (not thinking of performance so much as parts likely to break quickly or regularly)? Cheers, Nigel
  13. Thanks for the info. These all sound like damage that you would expect any similar car to get in such situations. Are there any particular design weaknesses that are unique to MT-2. I remember reading some posts discussing this but can't find them and can't recall the exact nature. I assume they were talking about the diffs given this thread. Was the diff a particular problem in the past with the MT-2? Cheers, Nigel
  14. Does this apply to the RTR version aswell as the SS. I can see mention of metal diffs in the blurb for the SS but not for RTR (but may have just missed it) - it just says 'new gear diff material for more load handling' whereas the SS is specifically advertised as metal gears. I'm liking the idea of this truck more and more but this will be my first nitro. Does it have any weakness I should be aware of - areas of poor design or likely to break. Thanks for the help. Cheers, Nigel
  15. My son will be 14. However, he has Asperger's Syndrome (a mild form of autism) so whilst he is very bright, he can be a little clumsy and naive. I would liken his behaviour to that of an 11 or 12 year old. In terms of car experience he has owned a Tamiya Fighter Buggy for some time, which has been upgraded with ESC, bearings and a slightly better engine. Mostly driven around the street - he can handle okay but I think he will miss not having a 'reverse' for a while. He has no experience of nitro engines, although I have loads (20 years of planes and helicopters) so I'm hoping I can teach him well. I'm confident I will be able to help him with maintenance aswell (I can rebuild and setup RC Helicopters). We are expecting that the nitro will be used on parks, open grounds, woods etc rather than our street because of the space needed and the noise. Cheers, Nigel
  16. I need some advice. My son wants a nitro buggy\truck for his birthday, just for bashing at the park, woods, rough ground rather than organised racing. We have done lots of research but he is now torn between two models and his preference changes on a daily basis. The contenders are HPI Firestorm Hoboa Hyper 7 Price wise, the Firestorm is a little cheaper but there is not a lot in it. Feelings on the two Firestorm ======= Visual appearance - this is the best-looking in my son's eyes Two shops have told us that RWD is more fun Two shops have told us that RWD has less to go wrong and is therefore, easier and cheaper to maintain HPI spares sold everywhere Stocked by my local store Good videos showing what it can do Hyper 7 ====== 4WD gives more control, maybe less fun but I expect it will be easier for my son to handle Build quailty, robustness - 'feels' better to me Lasting value - gut feel is that it take longer to outgrow and will hold it's price better Good videos showing what it can do So they are quite finely balanced. The one concern with the Hyper 7 is that it sits a lot lower than the Firestorm and although I appreciate it can do off road I can't help think that it will 'ground' on rough terrain or will sustain damage underneath. Ultimately, my son will be happy with either, I just want to try my best to buy the one that is going to be best for him. I'd appreciate any advice, but realise it is down to personal choice. Cheers, Nigel
  17. My son will be getting a nitro truck\buggy for his birthday - he can't choose between a Firestorm and a Hyper 7 - his preference changes on a day by day basis but that's another story. Whatever he goes for I would like to use rechargeable batteries throughout. I read up on Rx Hump Packs so that's okay - I have all the charging gear having loads of planes and helicopters myself. My question is about the transmitter. Ideally, I would like to fit AA NiMh or NiCad batteries and charge through a socket on the transmitter. So some questions, (i) Do they come with a socket or is it something I will have to engineer myslef (again, no worries if I have to) (ii) Looking at an ACOMS 27NHz Tx that we already have (came with a basic Tamiya buggy some year ago) this has a socket which is marked D.C. 12V. Can anyone confirm that this is charger socket or not (I can't find the manual). Cheers, Nigel
  18. I can't see how it can. The failsafe needs battery power to drive the throttle servo to a safe position (idle). If you have total battery failure then it can't do this. In reality I believe that a failsafe will operate under two conditions (i) When signal between the Tx and Rx is lost (assuming the Rx is still powered). or (ii) When battery level falls to a low threshold voltage. Cheers, Nigel
  19. I'm very new to land but have a lot of experience with air (35MHz). With 35MHz you have to take a little more care. Crystals for Single Conversion receivers can be swapped between brands but this is not the case with Dual Conversion - I personally have had a DC Receiver not work because it had the wrong brand of crystal. I'm not sure whether you get DC in land but I wouldn't be surprised to find it in 40MHz, but not 27MHz. Cheers, Nigel
  20. So are the wheels on the GT10 bigger than on the MT-2? In the pictures they look the same but admit it is difficult to tell. What about spares - are they difficult to get hold of for the HB? Cheers, Nigel
  21. I have be looking at Stadium Trucks for my son. He would be running on parks, rough ground so I had assumed that the ground clearance of an ST would be beneficial. But I have just been speaking to ModelSport and they suggested the Hyper 7 as a much better quality and stronger model. They also said that compared with a 1\10 ST the ground clearance of the Hyper 7 would be the same if not bigger. Any views? Cheers, Nigel
  22. I did look very carefully at the Lightning Stadium 10. The attraction is the price because it will mean that my son will have some birthday money left over for other things. The concern is that I would be paying a little money for something that wasn't very good. Still yet to find a good video - the link in the thread you sent doesn't work. Also the thread starts off promising but then degenerates into complaints about the pull cord breaking. Cheers, Nigel
  23. My son and I have been looking through the models sold here and he likes the following two HPI MT-2 G3.0 HB Lightning GT10 I've worked out that HB are related to HPI and looking at the two cars and the videos of them in operation they seem pretty similar. The parts of the HPI look slightly better finished (less rough edges etc.) and the HB looks very lightly higher spec (extra shocks and 3mm chassis plate). Other than these casual observations is there anything to choose between them? We also looked at the HB Lightning 10 Stadium Sport, which is a fantastic price but we weren't sure about the smaller engine in it. The videos we have seen make it look tame (and less fun) than the two listed above. Cheers, Nigel p.s. Did try to search the forums but didn't have much luck as the search engine doesn't permit words with less than 4 characters.
  24. Yep, I tried that one yeterday and just got a 'Fatal Error' message. I don't think it is a Proxy error. If I just got the problem at work I would suspect a proxy\firewall issue but I get the same at home even if I drop all security. Cheers anyway, Nigel
  25. Thanks for the replies. Yes, I've just seen the video of the GT10 and it looks great fun. Couldn't find any official videos of the Lightning 10 Stadium but have seen some on YouTube and it seems much tamer. To be fair, I guess I'm comparing a professional driver on the offial media with amateurs on YouTube but even so the GT10 looked much more fun. Cheers, Nigel
