  1. Hi Another one of my ongoing projects :-) I brought this on eBay a couple of weeks ago, it was another purchase where had I stopped and really thought about it I wouldn't have bothered. It's a HPI RS4 as far as I can make out, not sure which version other than its earlier I assume. Here are the eBay pictures. Untitled by markswebpages, on Flickr Untitled by markswebpages, on Flickr The seller wasn't the most communicative which made me suspicious and with no tracking number despite paying for a tracked delivery all I could do was wait. It turned up just over a week later. P1010812 by markswebpages, on Flickr P1010813 by markswebpages, on Flickr It looked OK and I had other things on the go so it got left for a few days
  2. This was brought in the same lot that I got the T maxx I've shown in my other thread. I didn't pay much for them as it was essentially a pile of bits that didn't work, but this was the reason I took the gamble. This looked mostly complete, but as the pull start was missing it was impossible to test. It was absolutely filthy so first job was to strip and clean. I couldn't understand why it was so caked in crap, but having not used a nitro car I just assumed that's what happens if you never clean it. These where taken after it was cleaned. P1010822 by markswebpages, on Flickr P1010823 by markswebpages, on Flickr Once I'd done that I found that the steering servo was dead (the crap had managed to work it's way inside) so I swapped it for a working one. Then I thought it would be wise to get it running before going any further, this is was when I discovered it had no head shims. This causes an interesting thing as it would try and start but wouldn't run, spraying crap all over the inside of the buggy in the process. I find it hard to believe it ever ran like it but the head bolts where extremely tight so who knows. I ordered them along with a body and hoped for the best. It looked quite neat with the body on Untitled by markswebpages, on Flickr After several unsuccessful attempts at trying to start I started looking for leaks, the exhaust seal was knackered so I swapped that but still no joy. Then I took the engine out again checked again took the carb apart, but changed nothing. Fired up straight away no idea what changed LOL. Used it a couple of times and got it running nicely but it didn't seem right on the control front. Then I caught a stud poking out of some concrete and shattered the tank. While I was waiting for the tank and suspension bits I checked the radio gear and discovered it was knackered and as soon as you get a meter or so away it went mental. A new 2.4ghz set was also ordered. Untitled by markswebpages, on Flickr Haven't run it again yet but hope to soon, it was great fun when I had it running. Some new wheels and tyres next, but I need to either find something to convert to hex drive or hunt out some Schumacher specific wheels, if anyone can suggest a any to get an adapter or bits to convert to hex I'd be great full. Tyres seem to grip well but I'm a bit reluctant to get the same style as I can see that the tread will last about two seconds on concrete or tarmac, any suggestions welcome?
  3. Yeah not sure what to do yet, I need to take a proper look at it and go from there. The gearbox is going to be a big factor because if that's unsalvageable then I suspect it'll be easier and cheaper to look for something that works to begin with. Sent from my IdeaTabA2109A using Tapatalk
  4. I got this chucked in with another buggy. I haven't had time to check it over other than a quick look over to try and gauge what was missing. Basically everything is missing or knackered other than the chassis and drive train (although still not convinced the gearbox isn't knackered too). So probably beyond returning to working original specifications, but seriously considering a brushless motor and LiPo set up. Has anyone ever tried it or got any ideas as it would be a shame to just bin it? Plan B is to strip it and eBay anything usable. 5. This was my first re entry into the RC world after a failed bid at trying drifting and destroying two ex carpet racers in the process. It's a HPI Wheely king that i brought on eBay. I was completely uneducated at the time so just looked for a HPI truck because I thought it would be the most reliable and easy to get parts for, what I didn't realise was this (and most of the others I'd looked at) had been partly converted into a rock crawler. So here it is after i unpacked it! Untitled by markswebpages, on Flickr It kinda worked when I got it but it was obvious that some stuff needed sorting and then as investigated more I realised the chassis had been turned round and steering servo was mounted very crudely on the diff casing, it dawned on me after some research that it had been converted into a rock crawler. As I wanted something I could just chuck in the car and take out and just blast around with this was completely useless as the steering servo was on the diff housing where it could get wet ,locked diffs and soft suspension made for something that was useless for anything other than rock crawling in a straight line. After some thought I knew I'd get as much enjoyment out of trying to get it to a usable state as I would from using it so I thought I'd strip it and rebuild it back to standard apart from the chassis which I kind of like as it's aluminium rather than plastic. Some of you will probably want to kill me for undoing the conversion, but I wanted it for a different purpose so it had to be changed and the servo mount was rubbish as it was made from aluminium and bent when you so much as looked at it and the conversion was very bad. Untitled by markswebpages, on Flickr Untitled by markswebpages, on Flickr and that was where it all started to go wrong and get a bit more expensive than I'd originally planned, it transpired all of the screws where either wrong or in the wrong place, getting the bits to reinstate the steering and the diffs wasn't cheap either. The springs where bent and buckled as where two of the wheels so reusing them wasn't an option either. But once it was apart I was kind of stuck, so I just dug deep and ordered the bits. This was how we finished up. Untitled by markswebpages, on Flickr New springs after i'd realised how knackered the old ones where! Untitled by markswebpages, on Flickr So since it was completed it's been faultless (in fact it's the only one of my growing collection that hasn't played up) and has been a great source of amusement. The only thing which is a shame is that although it corners much better with the diffs it's lost some of it's climbing ability but it's a small price is suppose. I would like to get a nicer body, ideally an land rover but HPI don't make them any more and none of the other one's I've seen look nice enough. So for the time being it'll stay as is unless I get board and just buy another of the same type of body from HPI (currently discontinued and very cheap from HPI) and paint it a nicer colour.
  6. I have an alternative delivery address that I can use now. The one thing I'm certain of is to never add up the cost, it seems fixing used ones is more expensive as buying new. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
  7. Yeah, my wife has already banned any more purchases until some are fixed or sold in on. One thing I do know is you'll never make your money back, just like their full size equivalent LOL Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
  8. Hi, Google directed me here when looking for an RC forum so I thought I'd sign up and see what this forum was like. Used to race 1/10 scale stuff about 20 years ago, then when I decided to give up a more physical hobby I thought I'd go back to RC cars. Made a huge mistake first off as because I'm also into cars I thought drifting looked cool. Two 1/10 touring cars four broken belts and only about two successful trips out I gave up sold the lot and started looking for something else to occupy my spare time. Then a mate of mine got a Tamiya Lunchbox repro kit and it got me thinking. He also dug an old HPI nitro car out of the back of his garage and that was enough for me to realise I just wanted something to chuck in the car and take anywhere. So eBay was scoured as funds where tight, I brought a HPI wheely king. It worked when I got it(of a fashion) but as it was all new to me I didn't realise it had been partly converted into a rock crawler. After some thought I decided to convert it back to standard as much as possible. What followed was probably a good demonstration of why you shouldn't buy second hand on eBay, soon as I looked properly it was obvious it had all the wrong screws and bits in the wrong places. Got there in the end though. The I ignored my own lessons and brought an HPI RS4 on ebay, whilst this was being sent I noticed a for sale ad a my local Facebook group so a cheeky offer later I had an almost complete Schumacher Rascal and the bare bones of a Traxxas T maxx. So that's about where I'm up to. Hoping that this forum might provide some help and useful banter whilst I wonder why I thought buying broken RC cars was a good idea LOL.
