Nitro engine sealing

Hey guys,

Going on from the review I did on the STS.28 engine, I was asked to do a guide on how to seal an engine as it was recommended the engine is sealed before use.

Please be gentle this is my first guide.

Here is the pictorial guide.

What you need:

Engine you are sealing

High Temp sealant

Allen Key driver (usually 2mm)

Step 1,

Take off your pullstart (blanking plate if you have a starter box jump to step 2)

Step 2,

Now the pullstart is off you will see the backplate, locate the 4 screws holding the backplate and take them out. Then take the backplate off.

Step 3,

You now need to get your high temp sealant and run a fine bead along the back of the crankcase, covering the backplate screw holes as you do this. When you have done that you have something that looks like this:

Once you have done these then you need to replace the backplate, tighten up the screws nice and tight so they don't come loose I would suggest using a blue threadlock.

It will look like this:

Take the carb pinch bolt out and the remove the carb a little twisting and pulling action will have the carb out in no time.

Step 6,

Get your high temp sealant once again and run it around the rim of the hole where you insert the carb.

Step 7,

Put the carb back on and then get the pinch bolt and put a blob of high temp sealant on the pinch bolt screw and some in the pinch bolt hole where you place the bolt, then put the pinch bolt back and tighten it back up making sure the carb is seated properly.

Step 8,

Take a step back and admire your work and the fact you have just sealed your engine.

You need to wait 24 hours for the sealant to cure correctly so I would suggest you do this when stripping your car next time.

If I remember rightly, the T-15 is a side exit exhaust and flat so yeah thats fine (good idea considering the flat gaskets are pants) we do it with the petrol models. However on round exhaust exit ports there is no need as you get the silicone gaskets.

year flat mount minifold on them mate , i found a BIIIIIG oil leak through the pullstart backing plate so that got seald up well lol but when i checked for air leaks days earlier there was none what so ever, the exaust was abit leaky too and abit of oil from the head so i gave it a full strip down and clean and seal up

Nice guide will help loads of people.

A couple of small additions.

Make sure all the surfaces are clean and free from fuel, or oil residue as the sealant won`t stick to oily surfaces.

When you tighten up the parts with sealant, in particular the backplate, as seen in the pics, don`t worry about wiping away the bead which pushes out, wait for everything to dry and it`ll pull of neatly in one go.

Some engines will also leak air through the carb needles, these can be sealed using this or other similar products

Thats cool, what the slime does, is not set like the sealant so the seal is maintained even if the needle settings need to be changed

Something I found today that might help people;

I used an old fishtank air pump to test for leaks. Connected it up to the fuel line... easier to see where the leaks are with it sat on the table, and no chance of getting nitro in the mouth.

ye great tutorial. also if you have a low quality engine like the one in one of my cars your might need to seal the heatsink on to prevent air leaks (crazy i know) so use same concept with sealent and what not

Well I use Permatex ultra copper, works well. But you can use anything that says high temperature sealant on it really.
