  1. The Golf body I picture on the first page of the topic is ~260mm and worked great. I picked it up pre-painted from craggy designs on FB but I htink you can get the unpainted shell from DMS Racing.
  2. Nice work on both those. The Strada video looks great too.
  3. Looking for a clean blackfoot re-re. Ideally a roller. No need for electronics. Cheers.
  4. I hadn't realised that. Seems likely.
  5. Nice find! Yeah, the HPI bodies are fractionally wider. I have one on my XV01 and had to go with fairly extreme offset wheels to fill the wheel arches.
  6. Quick update for anyone considering a TA02 build. My own TA02 is not 'in class' but it's still been an interesting car to run. It's a surprisingly decent chassis (given its age), the shocks are easily extended (I removed the V3 spacer and added a shock o-ring with the remaining V1 spacer) and the Calibra shell can be cut back (fairly dramatically) to work with a rally car. Leaves you with this: Only issue I had with it was that the front bumper provides hee-haw protection, especially for the shell. Clearly nobody at Tamiya had embraced urethane bumpers back in the early '90s. So, I bodged in a urethane bumper as below and it fits great. Required a bit of dremmeling of the existing bumper but only took a few minutes.
  7. I have a wee fan on the smaller of the two caps on mine. No idea if it helps 🙂 More importantly though, congrats and hope all is well mate!
  8. Well, donning my cap as the Bernie Ecclestone of this particular racing class, I'd say this: The original rules stipulated a total £200 or less with the following guidance: 1. Money spent on the car or any parts for the car must be deducted from the budget 2. Any components that come with a purchased car or kit that are not being used (a brushless motor/ESC or receiver/transmitter for example) can be sold on with revenue from sale added back onto available budget 3. You can raid your own spares box. My thinking on this would be things like wheels/tyres, receiver, brushed motor and/or ESC, servo etc I think an area of ambiguity is the sale of things from your spares box to fund the car. This could get tricky as I probably have a couple of hundred quid's worth of stuff in my spares box that I could sell if I include wheels, motors etc. That said, Bernie has never been averse to a bit of creative accounting so who am I to judge?
  9. Loving the look of the HPI under that Audi shell. Looking forward to hearing how that runs. Nice job on the XV-01 too. It's a great build and great fun to drive when you're done too. Are you using the stock pinion? I'm still having heat issues on mine. Keen to hear how you get on. The Traxxas rally is just too big to be in class but it is a really appealing car. I've nearly bought a used one several times. Never quite gone for it. As an aside, I was away at the weekend and found this spot just outside Aviemore. I hade no RC cars with me but it looked like the ideal spot to mark out a rally course: Lastly, I got the TA03F all serviced and reassembled. I even managed to salvage the battered shell with some shoo goo and tape: Total spend on this car remains very low. £70 purchase - sales of radio and ESC bring it in at ~£30! I've had to ball race the car and splashed out on a torque splitter (£25) but even then it's only £70 and drives superbly.
  10. Agreed. Really interested in this one. It looks like a nice chassis.
  11. Being an obsessive sort of chump I now have three possible entries. Initial observations below: 1. XV01 - Such a great chassis. Beautiful handling and definitely among the smoothest of 1/10th cars on bumpy surfaces. Only issue I'm having is getting any speed out of it on a silver can. The torque tuned motor motor ran super hot with a 24T pinion (and then melted). No obvious friction in the drive train but the belt may have been too tight. Dropping back to the stock 22T pinion and running a slacker belt seems to improve things but the stock silver can motor still got very warm. It's a puzzler. 2. TA03F - I'm pretty besotted with this one and it's worked out super cheap. After selling the unwanted radio etc the car has only cost me £35! I've raised it a little by removing the internal spacers from the shocks, aded fresh ball races and added a front bumper, otherwise it's just as it arrived with me. Total spend £60. Even with a silver can it's way faster than my XV01 and the motor doesn't seem to get warm at all.I'm puzzled but delighted. Handling wise, it's like a road oriented XV01 (no surprise there). Corners beautifully but a bit less composed on bumpy surfaces. I have high hopes that this can be tuned out though. 3. TA02 - I went for the used TA02 on ebay (just got too curious). After selling the RX, I think it will end up costing me ~£110. I've not actually run it yet (only turned up last night) but the chassis looks simple and robust. Shocks are weirdly set up though. Really limited travel because they include both the V1 and V3 spacers in the build. The oil in them also seems far to light. I'll rebuild with fewer spacers and thicker oil and report back. It's relative simplicity makes me suspect it's handling may not be quite on par with the TA03 but, mid/rear motor will still be interesting and the shaft drive can only be more reliable. Happy rallying this weekend if your cars are sorted.
  12. For brushed use, I'd recommend using non-sticky grease in the gearboxes (probably the ceramic grease ship ship in the kit). Like I say, my brushed motor melted and the only source of friction I can identify is the sticky/heavy grease I used on the gears. Looking forward to re-stripping/cleaning/greasing the car 🙂
  13. It's a really good chassis. You'll be pleased with it I'm sure.
  14. Well, that's a teaser. Come one, what have you gone for? 😀
  15. Okay, update on the car(s). In a dry spell over the weekend me and my mate actually got out and did some racing. Recent torential rain mena the ususal woodland spots were too waterlogged so we opted for a road stage in a large carpark. Got some spray chalk, marked out a circuit (about 16mx8m) and got underway. It was great fun. Even better than I'd expected. My mate's TA04 was a good match against the XV01. Not as easy in the corners but way faster on the straights. It made for some great racing with both cars running at speeds where you could actually choose racing lines and overtake without wiping eachother out. The XV01 is a great chassis, freshly built shocks with long eyelets gave a bit of extra ground clearance and made it lean really nicely into the corners. All good scale driving stuff. Only issue was that, after one pack, the torque tuned motor died on me. Now, IIRC the stock piniopn on the XV01 is a 22T which is to be used with the stock silver can motor. Conventional wisdom says you can up the tooth count on tour pinion with a torque tuned (or maybe I've got that wrong?). So, I put 24T pinion on the torque tuned and went racing. The motor is absolutely toast (I should hae noticed the reducing power) and it may also have taken the ESC with it Bit surprised it was running so hot is all. The drive train seems to be running freely enough. The only issue I can think of is that I used a fairly heavy (sticky) grease on the gears. I've used it on all my other cars without issue but maybe the extra drag is just too much for a brushed setup? I'll need to find a bit of time to take a look and see if there are any other sources of friction going on. Focussing on the positives though, the concept is sound. I mean, it's hardly original, any club will limit motor power for racing but that combined with a budget limit made for really interesting cars and racing. Also, just taking the 5 minutes to chalk out a proper circuit made all the difference compared to just blasting around a basic oval. Can't believe I've not done that before.
  16. Yeah, I may have lower standards 🙂 I was betting on the motor being okay ( or raiding the parts bin) and then trying to work with the existing shell. Came with a servo and then a radio to sell on for ~£20. I was hoping (perhaps naively) to get it running for £30 or so minus the £20 for radio sale. Work out at around £120 with the existing body. I anticpate a lot for 'rubbing' in this racing class so wasn't planning to put much effort into the shell 🙂
  17. I know what you mean but some really god stuff (IMHO) turned up on eBay over the weekend. An XV02 with motor etc went for £240 delivered. Sell the brushless rig and you'd be in budget (was tempted myself). A TA02 with MAX10 combo and a load of hop ups went for £150. Anyone here go for that one? An XV01 with a couple of missing parts (gear and belt cover) but a radio that could be resold went for £103!!!! Play the long game, something always comes up 🙂
  18. So, here's an update on my XV01: Super Mini CVA shocks and XV01 dirt springs from RCJAZ, all within my remaining budget! That soft damper oil that came with them though was not up to the job, it bounced around like mad. Increased it to 800cst at the back and 1000cst in the front and it seems better. Might need thicker still in the front though. I'll see if it calms down a bit once it picks up some grime. Stole the torque tuned from my daughter's buggy until the seller sends out a replacement and upped the pinion to a 24T one I had lieing around. I also used some velcro to pull the sides of the body shell together a bit in the middle. The HPI shell is not as nice as the tamiya one and without this mod, looks like a jelly mold of a Subaru. Pretty happy with the body height (trimmed it a bit around the front bumper) so I'll crop the body posts and I think that'll be me done. Really, it's all gone a bit too easily for my tastes. My mate's TA04 entry is definitely more interesting. On the other hand, an XV01 is a great fun car so I'm sure we'll have a blast racing them.
  19. Remember the rule about selling parts of the car on! I was able to sell the radio gear that came with mine for £25 and the seller (very decent guy) gave me a refund for the defunct battery. Leaves me with a £160 XV01 which, I think, is bargain territory. It's allowed me to order a set of shocks for it and still stay well inside budget. If you can see past the XV01 idea, there's this bargain shelf queen TA02 Lancer on 'the facebook' right now for £170. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/369584021917361/?ref=search&referral_code=null&referral_story_type=post&tracking=browse_serp%3Aeba38484-3638-429f-97e1-64a281abe828 Comes brushless so you'd need to pull that out to stay within the rules but you'd be able to sell it on or stash it for a future build. Provided you have a brushed set up to driop in, selling the brushless combo on would leave you with a proper bargain car. There is also the TA02 Calibra kit on Amazon for £131 if you fancy starting from scratch but it'll def cost you more overall once you've ball raced it and added servo.
  20. Beautiful job! For a straight up rally car there is nothing that looks better (IMHO) than the Lancia. I reckon it'll be pretty rapid on a 15T motor (especially with a 25T pinion). I believe the sliver can is 25T and I'm only running the stock 22T pinion so far. Let us know how it goes.
  21. Further update. I found I already had a 2S lipo that (just) fitted in the battery tray of the XV01 so took that out for a quick spin last night (with the stock silvercan motor and 22T pinion). So, I have to take back my earlier comment. The car is not slow at all. The speed issue I had previously was clearly just the tired old battery. I had great fun just sweeping the car up and down the street outside our house. I was shocked just how good a £35 brushed system can be (£15 motor, £20 ESC). The car had plenty of pace and just enough torque for light wheelspin. The suspension and steering where able to work properly with the speed so the car just looked way more scale. I am really impressed. It has to be said that I was having pretty much as much fun as I do driving my Castle MambaX equipped XV01. Sure, that one is faster but it's just constantly hair raising. With the stock brushed system you still get a decent top speed but without the constant wheel spin and resultant sliding around. I reckon it'll be absolutely spot on with a torque tuned motor. It's almost as if Tamiya knew what they were doing when they specced the car 🙂 Certainly, when my bargain basement TA03 turns up I'll be giving it a good trial with a brushed setup rather than immediately shopping around for a brushless setup as I would previously have done.
  22. Updates on this project. Here's the car with a set of rally wheels/tryes added: The body is quite wide so the slightly extreme offset of these wheels works well. I gave it a once over, added oil to the diffs (previous owner was running them with just a bit of grease) and swapped the shock ends to long eyelet ones left over from my XV01 build. Took it out. for a drive and wow, this thing is slow 😂. I guess there's a reason we all moved over to brushless setups years ago. Couple of observations on this though: 1. It's running at a more appropriate scale speed so the chassis actually gets a chance to work (rather than just constantly drifting across the surface as the wheels spin). 2. You can actually drive the car where you intend. It's not thrown around by the road surface. 3. Once you get used to the above and modify your driving style, it's quite good fun. Further observations on the car itself. 1. I think the motor is b*ggered. Very noisy. It's a torque tuned one but when I swapped it for a standard silver can the car was quieter and faster. 2. I think the battery is also on its last legs. I got multiple random LVCs when accelerating and it only lasts 10 minutes. 3. The shocks/springs are just too stiff. Even at low speeds, the car bounces everywhere. Nothing like the plush handling of my XV01 on stock shocks. Regards 1 and 2 above, the seller is sending a new motor and a partial refund for the battery so no complaints there. I've ordered a 'stick' lipo that should turn up tomorrow if I'm lucky. Hopefully that will give a longer drive time and a bit more punch. If there is still an issue, I guess it could be the HW1060 ESC but I gather they are often used for 1/10th scale rally/touring cars so I don't see it as being the issue? Further to the XV01, I noticed a listing on eBay for a used TL01 car. When I checked the pictures though, it was a TA03F boxed with original instructions. I couldn't resist and got it for £70 all in. Very excited to try it out.
  23. That photo remineded me that I'm still runing those tyres and wheels after more than a year. Made me think, I've run my XV01 with a ~4000kv motor for over a year now and, somehow, the tyres are still holding on (just). On a similarly powered motor the PTG-2 has completely destroyed the same type of tyres in a couple of outings. If I were to guess I'd say it's because the XV01 actually goes round corners while the PTG2 slides round corners. Both are fun, just very different to drive.
  24. I love that shell. Here's the one I did for my original XV01. I decided to dodge the traditional martini livery and go for a solid colour with minmal decals. The por thing has ended up being totally hammered and has lost a lot of paint now. Still looks good from a distance though 🙂
  25. It's such a great looking chassis, what body are you planning to use? Thanks for the offer of motor and pinion but my used XV01 came with both and I have spares from my own previous XV-01 build 🙂
