    Tamiya to re-release the Bigwig?

Rumours have it that Tamiya will issue a re-release of their iconic The Bigwig 1/10th 4WD buggy early next year. Originally released back in 1986 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Tamiya’s RC section, the Takuya Yura designed buggy was probably the first RC car that was created with optimised aerodynamics in mid. It’s “wing-type” body created some stir and even today it is one of the more sought-after vintage Tamiya kits.

I've been reading all over the forums and blogs etc that everyone wants this re-released. I won't be surprised if it is.

I remember that back in the 80's, was one of the most sought after Tamiya buggys in it's day. Go for stupid money on ebay now.

I'll await it's presence :D and price tag...

Yeah, but its really just a tarted up Boomerang.

What made the original Bigwig special was the fact it came with a Technigold motor and was made for 8.4V power, making it the fastest 'out of the box' RC of its day. Just doesn't work the same now.....

There is a workaround if you want a Pilot Escort. It's by no means a 100% genuine build but it's probably the next best thing without paying stupid money for something that's second hand and not up to scratch.

    CLICKY

You just need to source the body parts and buy a chassis, which is readily available. The whale tail is probably the hardest to find.

Or the other option is the Escort WRC.

    CLICKY

As with the pilot model, everything is readily available, the rear spoiler can be had for a tenner and theres pleanty out there.

I didn't add them up, but the shells, decals, paint and spoilers cost an estimated £65, then all you need is a chassis. If you have one, you're sorted. The WRC chassis is a TT01E which I paid £50 brand new, the Pilot is a brand new TL-01, parts bought from various suppliers cost an estimated £70.

Time consuming rounding everything up but it was a lot of fun :D

it was ugly then  and it hasn't changed.  im sure that is why they stuck that motor in it.  in the hope it would sell more.

    Bit more on this...

Looks like they've ditched the Dick Cepek decal off the wing.

And a French release note which includes other models.

    €220 on a french site = £187.

    GT tuned motor though.

The Technigold was what made this car - its just not the same without.

Yes I know that the Technigold is terribly outdated and that the GT tuned is probably quicker, but the truth is there were better motors even back in the day. What was desirable about the Technigold is that the only place you found it was in top end Tamiya's. The Bigwig is really just a Boomerang variant with a fancy shell - it was the Technigold (and correspondingly higher price tag) that made it special.

They've done their best to disguise the motor by sticking a black sticker over it.

They've now landed in South Korea.

I've got the one of these. Described some notes, and attached a few pics about re-re.

Sub-chassis is there, and full ball bearings.

Two steel anttenas were included like original, and pipe style also can be selected.

4 yellow oild dampers are (almost) same as original (not cva2 version). A small hole on each rear damper caps seems noticeable thing.

F/R drive shafts & gearbox joints seem same as re-re Hotshot's

Designed for old 8.4v long battery, re-re builders can choose to attach some sponge block tapes on each side of battery holder of bathtub chassis if needed.

    Moon craft logos on wheels.

Bright gold unique sticker is attached on GT-tuned motor.

Small square hole in front bumper like re-re Boomerang.

Official release date in Japan looks like FEB 2017, being hinted to the rear cover of the manual.

I hadn't ori-Bigwig at that times, so couldn't tell with full certainty, but overall re-re model's changes and updates seem rather small, as another Tamiya re-re's.

    Taken pics are below.
