As a Ferrari fanboi I've never wanted a Limitless/Infraction more than I do now.

I was on that fence but I think the 919 Evo’s recent escapades have put that to the too of the pile. 
 

Schumachers F2004 and Hamiltons W12 are pretty incredible mind

Im guessing you mean the 1960’s GT40? If so, yes it did beat the Ferrari eventually. But it took so many attempts, and so much money I dont hold it in as high of a regard as the Ferrari (330 P4 I think?) it eventually beat. On the subject of Le Mans, Audi dominating with a Diesel was pretty amazing too. 
 

 

Shout out to Lotus too, as you have to have their name somewhere on the list, and the Mclaren MP4/4. 
 

Porsche have had a few other than the 917/919 too. But I get them mixed up.

Yea. Senna’s from 1989 although I will controversially say that its maybe regarded higher as it was Senna’s and he died prematurely unfortunately 😕

Also made me remember my ‘curved’ television (curved outwards 🤣) with the dodgy wood panelling on the sides and remote that was connected to the TV with a long cable!

Personally, I can't count the 919 Evo. It's not a race car; it's more of a demonstration car. It does not meet any racing regulations and will never race in any official capacity. It's a monster, no doubt! An incredible machine.

 

It's a 2 litre, 4 cylinder turbo hybrid, though!!... give me the 917K's flat-12 ANY day of the week!

 

Hamilton's Mercedes is the single most dominant F1 car of all time, but I can't even have it in the discussion for "greatest", as it was merely a response to the new hybrid regulations, rather than a breakthrough in design philosophy and a pioneering legend. Plus, it brought in the dullest era of F1 possibly ever. I stopped watching, such was the yawn-factor. And it sounds like a vacuum cleaner.

 

Mercedes do have a few contenders:

W125- Built for the 1937 Grand Prix season, it had a 5.6 litre, supercharged straight-8 engine; producing up to 637bhp!! That made it the most powerful road-racing car ever... until the late 1960s! Grand Prix cars wouldn't match it until the early 1980s, by that point they had become "Formula 1" and had turbocharged engines.

It won on debut (Tripoli Grand Prix, non-Championship) and took the Grand Prix Championship, winning 4 out of 5 races.

 

W196- 1954 & 1955 Grand Prix Championships. Had a 2.5 litre, direct-injection, desmodromic valved straight-8 (everyone else used carbs), Scored a 1-2 on its Grand Prix debut and won 9 out of the 12 races it competed in (and would have won 10, but the air intake clogged-up at the Spanish Grand Prix). Scored a 1-2-3-4 at the British Grand Prix and won both World Championships it competed in. Goodness knows how much more dominance the car would have enjoyed, but Mercedes pulled from racing in 1955, after the Le Mans disaster with the 300 SLR. OK, maybe THIS is my pick for greatest race car of all time!... or the 917K... or this... or the 300 SLR... or...

 

300 SLR- 1955 World Sportscar Championship. W196-derived 3 litre straight 8.  Missed the first 2 rounds and had a big gap to catch-up to Ferrari. The car debuted at Round 3: the Mille Miglia, where it scored a 1-2 (the Famous Moss record-breaker). It was running 1-3 at the next round in Le Mans, before being involved in that colossal, tragic accident, which resulted in over 80 people being killed. Mercedes abandoned racing, at the end of the season and withdrew the remaining Mercedes' from the Le Mans race. The car then scored a 1-2-3 at the Dundrod RAC Tourist Trophy and a 1-2-4 at the  Targa Florio. The 300 SLR won the Championship and 3 out of 4 races it competed in (all of them at least 1-2).  As with the W196, goodness knows how much more dominance was on the cards, were it not for Le Mans. The SLR does have one thing over the rest of my list, though; it's utterly beautiful.

I was going to mention the 300SLR as it was pretty insane for its time. 
 

I cant agree with you regarding hybrid. Other than noise (which is subjective). Hybrid and what comes next are the future. Theyre better in every way. Faster, safer, more economical, better for the environment. There is no downside to them, other than noise which to anyone other than a petrol head, is a negative. 
 

Im far from Lewis fan, but you simply cant argue against him. It was boring for 1 of 2 reasons (or a combination of both):

 

1; Lewis was light years ahead of everyone as a driver and was the reason for it being boring. You cant criticise him for being good, you should be criticising the others for not being as good. 
 

2: Merc nailed the regulations. There was nothing stopping at least 2 of the other teams (RB & Ferrari) competing with them. They have similat budgets, similar employees etc. They just werent as good as Merc and for me, that should be commended and celebrated.

 

PS. The noise argument is won by the 787B 😉

If we are going to include rally, then the Delta Integrale! But yes, the Quattro turbo, for sure!

 

Hybrids aren't necessarily faster, because no battery is 100% efficient, so it will take more putting-in than it can output. Which is why a drill can't harness the spinning motion to charge itself, for example. It's also why the original Prius barely scraped by 40mpg, realistically.

 

In order for a hybrid to be truly more efficient and faster, then it has to gain its charge from somewhere other than the engine (or in addition to), such as harnessing braking power. So yes, the potential for performance and economy is certainly greater, because all cars have to brake.

 

As for safer; no. Lithium batteries (as we are all very aware on this forum) are massively dangerous when taking damage. And hybrids have both lithium batteries AND internal combustion engines. The fire brigade are told not to even bother trying to put out an electric car fire, because lithium batteries produce oxygen when they burn. They'll burn underwater. You can't put them out. Hammond's electric car crash caused that wreck to burn for 6 days! Then there's what happened to the entire Moto-E paddock...

 

More environmentally friendly? Again, no. Lithium mining is hugely damaging to the environment and they are even having to mine on the ocean floor, to meet demand. Hybrids and electric cars are only more environmentally friendly as far as the end user is concerned; not overall. By the way, I specialise in environmental conservation and work alongside the energy industry.

 

I'm not criticising Hamilton; he was in the right team at the right time. And I'm not criticising Mercedes; they did the best job. But it was just so boring. If Alonso had gone to Merc and Lewis to McClaren, Alonso would likely be a 9x champion. It's just how the dominoes fell.

 

The noise debate... well my favourite is probably the 917, but I won't disagree about that Mazda! I also love the Busso V6, or the induction roar of the Mercedes 190E DTM.

MP4/4 was 1988, the last year of the turbos. Won 15 out of 16 races.

Knew it was around then. What an amazing machine!

It's a shame the rebirth of McClaren-Honda was such a disaster.
