  3. Well...that went surprisingly well! Grabbed a bit of thin MDF strip ( was packing from some self assembly furniture, but it always comes in handy!) and started roughing out hte layout. The front setup is fine, and the MDF thin enough to bend to the shape hte front kickup would have. The second setup will need a custom top brace, as the steering posts are too far away. It was pretty clear that the path for a front steering linkage was through the front shock towers, and a little kink in some M4 studding made me what I needed. It alctually seems to work. I f I get flex issues, then I will take the time to 3D print a centre piece to take a copuple of rod ends. That wont flex, but I reckon the rod will work well enough. In testing...it works as long as I hold the back steering posts steady. I will need, as I mentioned, a custom upper brace for the rear steering block, and a brace between the 2 front diff housings. Both will be simple sheet ally and easy to make. Then I looked to the rest. I pulled hte centre diff form the donor buggy, with motor attached. Putting it in place, along with the shortest driveshaft I had in the box of odds and ends, I worked out how far I could shorten things over stock. Ditching the stock chassis brace, and fabricating one that runs over the top to the centre diff solves many issues, and allows the motor to sit fairly close to the rear assembly. The steering servo will go pretty much in the stock location....and I can sit the ESC up above the centre diff on the new rear top brace. Battery trays...I could go with the one I already made....or....as a preference....I want to have 2 'pannier' trays. I run it on 4S using 2 2s....so that would give me a balance. A job for the 3D printer. So...what does it look like now? I will put a couple of spacers under the centre diff mounts, so I don;t have a 'slot' hole for the centre diff to let the muck in. Compared to a stock Hyper 7.....the front wheels would site pretty much dead centre of the 2 front wheel sets, so the thing is only about 30mm longer than a stocker.

  5. and you think...hmmm...that might work. Was tidying my stock of Hyper parts up, seperating and putting together complete assemblies just to see what I had after I got everything unpacked following a recent house move. Shocks, wheels, a load of parts... I also had my brushless converted one out on the table as I was thinking about a rework of it's component layout. Was looking at the bits all together, comparing the steering setups..... when I also found this....which I had put together a little while back. It's made up from 2 spare Hyper 7 diff cases, with the mating surfaces cleaned up, and a slice out for a shock tower. Basically...it's a pass through diff for a 6 wheel drive setup. I plan to make a tube to replace the driveshaft cups to link the pinions together... Now I want to build this.... I mean...everyone should have a 6 weheel drive 4 wheel steer buggy.... right?

  7. The esc will melt, you can spend the extra on hobbywing or expect to be replacing the esc very quickly @Bert_w164 cooked his surpass in his hyper. Worth not going cheap imo.

  8. well..... it could certainly be an interesting project. Currently looking at how I could re-arrange the internal components to shorten the back part of the chassis. Going to make a mockup chassis and see how it would all fit. Not a clue what I would do with regard to a bodyshell, but I have a few ideas to play around with. Will see what's what.... but if I can get the thing shorter so it's no more than 30mm longer than a stock Hyper....it should go well too. I also figured if I mount the steering arms in 2 different points on the servo arm...I could get proportionally different steering...with the outer wheels moving further than the second pair. This will make it turn more than crab I am putting far too much thought into this 🙂

  9. Nice little haul... An M chassis truck body, no idea what this will be for however it was on eBay for £15 posted so took a punt. Need colour ideas? M03 chassis braces from fibre lite Another M05 in kit form from Germany, ordered Monday morning and arrived today, not paying local VAT or UK VAT is rather nice.

  10. Found some huge washers, 55mm, thought I’d make some redneck diff guards 😁 All I can smell is burning stainless (and that was with good drill bits and oil!) I hope they don’t cause more damage than their worth…

  16. Lol, so many opinions to pick from @Jack Reacher. you know my choice would be the Traxxas Trx4 and learn to drive it properly, you will find it sooooo rewarding!!! hpi venture, is good truck with a few essential mods, but the parts supply is a little worrisome. original scx10 was just awesome and deserved recognition in the top Rc of all time! However the newer models were late coming out, parts supply was/is a joke, rtr electrics have improved but still nothing to jump up and down for and the pricing now is just ridiculous. That new Bronco scx10.3 with portals removed for instance is the same as a new Trx4 which has a enormous parts back catalogue and plenty of 3rd party people making stuff for them. element enduro, no idea, not seen one of these in action or in the flesh. I recall a thread not too long ago I believe was yours @Jack Reacher, asking about the best crawler? I answered in that too. hang fire and have a go with my Trx4 at the nationals, if you don’t want one (maybe not the Defender but in some form) by then, fair enough and go with something else, it will give you some idea of just what a sorted Trx4 will do on the competition side of things, I’ll even make you a cup of tea

  18. Ah the surpass hobby saga. If you're going to get one, don't change the connectors to XT90 like I did, then shove 6S thru it on a 2200kv 4274 motor. It won't last long. Someone pointed out that when I changed to dual XT90s I took away the inherent current limiter of the deans (which if is true, is totally bad practice as it's advertised as a 6S ESC)...Mine was fine on 3S, back then I didn't have 4S to test. I totally appreciate not everyone wants to spend big money, how about a Hobbywing WP-SC8? £45 brand new I've seen them, I run one on my wife's Hyper 7, on 3-4S, it's not skipped a beat and it's 120a rating is fine. Good shout on the BL150 @tomr, I have one in my Losi LST!

  19. I’d be wary about using those esc’s, if ya can up your budget a little and buy something like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/163057138146?hash=item25f6f679e2:g:k9IAAOSw2u1a2gCK and this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/153146594466?hash=item23a83f94a2:g:ZuwAAOSwALBb5ho-

  21. Thanks for the reples so far, good solid helpful posts, seems i can forget the TRX4 Ranger, i often hear how top heavy it is and that is always a bad thing in a crawler. Also the HPI can go, maybe to much concern regarding spares and parts, plus it is a little dated. So it could be that an SCX10 III is in the lead and would be a good rig with spares a plenty my only issue here is the fact they only do Jeep shells and i dont care for them, maybe not a deal breaker though and the new Gmade pick up does look sweet with good spec, should be out by time i am ready to buy

  22. I broke it with 6S 😁 Okay that's unfair, inspecting it, it seems the wrong gear was used as it's 15T as opposed to 16T as per the losi manual. Given the age (10+ years old) and then a sudden blast of 4S and then 6S I'm not surprised. Learnt a lot by stripping it down. Can't wait to get this running again.

  23. All done. Just need to charge up the new battery packs and head out for a spin. I still haven’t decided if it’s going to get any stickers but figure I can always do that later on if needed. Might try and stick the headlight and radiator grille ones on to start.

  25. Before I put them in I trimmed the edges so they sit in the tyres better .dont think it made any difference. As I put the car on the stand and put a flat screwdriver next to the rim of the wheel then drove the wheels and the screwdriver didnt touch the wheel rim at all but the wheel was all over the place so it was the tyre that was out of place .just the back wheels the front are lined up. .

  28. hehe, hello dude! Yeah doing ok man, just been killer busy with life... Toys are still waiting for me 👍 I trust you are well?.. I had a couple of the old night crawlers many moons ago, they were fun as one of the options also had a dig ( Drive line disconnect) , was a bit of a faff to set up but useful when working...

  29. Overall they are a super solid truck, ive not had any servo fail yet and its not been treated kindly 35mph into a parked car, many big hill rolls and only replaced the front axle housing after the high speed crash. The stock esc does the job as does the motor, Pretty sure @Iain .R is still running my trx4 motor in his outlaw and hasnt melted yet. Reliability 9.5/10

  30. Oh Gaz you know how to play devils advocate (in a good way), so lets get my take on the TRX4 and go from there, first up this is a real scale rig, Traxxas NAILED it big time with the Bronco Ranger XLT and no negative points on the drive line, Titan motor locking diff`s and 2s speed trans, i have heard servo`s can die, guess same to be said of a lot of makes (my old carisma Lynx killed its servo first meet i ran it, walk of shame) I do have concerns running this rig on any tough event or course if it rolls down a bad drop it will be real expensive to put say, a new shell on, but of course spares are usually ready available. There is an advantage that a lot of my off road driving is trail driving hence my facebook group and no denying the TRX4 is a great trail rig. so maybe i will keep an open mind on the Bronco, and they do come up used but just about mint sometimes. and to reply to the SCX 10 ii comment yes its a legend, a deserved classic that still cuts the Mustard Might well take you up on the drive and pot of Tea mate

  32. The bugsta wheels aren’t quite as large in diameter or width. I also used different tyre inserts to the ones provided with the wheels, which are more dense. the problem with all the FTX wheels is the inserts - they’re absolutely useless! Otherwise they’d probably be fine to use long term

  33. The copies are indeed copies, usually come with loads of alloy and carbon looking parts. They generally don't have the same quality of screws and don't fit together as well. But, if you are just wanting something to have fun with, I am sure it will be perfectly okay. Maybe just check it all over and give it a good lube up 🙂 I have a couple of RWD D4s, for indoor club/comp use they need a fair bit of upgrading and tuning but I do quite like the chassis.

  36. If they are anything like the original 2.2 night crawlers then it'll have decent performance for "crawling" with the worm gears and relatively low profile axles. I guess most folk want more of a "scale" truck look with a ladder chassis... That said, some of those have some pretty poor bodies where the Losi I personally think looks brilliant 👍

  40. Gmade Buffalo civilian or the HPI venture or the Hobao DC1 or Element Enduro (any really) TRX4 Fallover 👎 the little i know about you Jack i'd steer so clear of this, pretend they dont exist. SX10III is a solid choice but i wouldnt get it, full plastic links etc, the new sx10III bronco tho with straight axles and metal links is nice but a fortune and its very big, bigger than the gladiator

  41. I got the paint done on the shell today so starting to look a lot better now. since taking the last picture I’ve put on the stickers for the headlights but I think I’m going to leave all the others off for now. Since “finishing” I have noticed one slight issue in that I seem to have put the two mounting posts on the optional carbon fibre top deck on the wrong way round. So until I swap these round (with the taller one at the back of the car) I can’t get the clip in at the rear of the shell. I also had a bit of an issue with the supplied window masks when I was painting the shell so that has turned out quite as well as I’d have liked. The issue I had is that the supplied stickers started to lift when I was putting paint down so I’ve got a bit of bleeding around the edges of the windows. Not the end of the world but slightly annoying as it’s not something I’ve seen on any of the areas where I have custom cut masks from my tesa masking tape.
