Engine disaster

I have been running my savage today and seem to have had an engine disaster.

The engine revs, the clutchbell gear does'nt move!

It was run in as per instructions,and i have just fitted a hardened spur & clutch bell gear...

The screw that holds the clutch bell gear on was loctited on and now i cant get it off, it just spins.

I am wondering if it is internal engine prob or if the flywheel pins have broken.

But how do i hold it to get the screw out to check the flywheel??

If you have used loctite on the screw, just gently worm it up, then it will undo.

If you need to lock the crankshaft, and you haven’t got a locking tool to hand, then you can remove the header pipe to gain access to the combustion chamber and, with care, insert the end of a large plastic cable tie.

As the piston comes up it will not be able to reach tdc, so will be locked, then you can undo the screw for the clutch bell, (having gently wormed the screw first) but be careful not to damage the piston and liner.

I have used mole grips on the fly wheel, protect the flywheel with thick card. does the flywheel spin on the crankshaft? if so this is where your problem is. I suspect the flywheel is loose and thats why the clutch bell isn't being driving

At the risk of upsetting you, there is a real good reason to use plastic Spur gears as opposed to metal. I know it's after the event but I hope it helps in future.

Got have alot of power from the block transferring across the bell/spur to move alot of wieght, IF something in the transmission/powertrain or anywhere, is enough to lock up one section, the 'plastic' spur gear is like a safety fuse to protect either the crankshaft or the powertrain depending on which side is boned.

Simply put it's alot cheaper and quicker to replace a stripped spur gear than a melted gearbox or engine.

(He says after an awfull jump which moved my 2.5R forwards and stuffed my spur gear, if it was metal I suspect alot more money than £3.50 would have been involved)
