Bloody hell thats too much mate I usually charge at 1c if its a 1500 pack thats 1.5 amps and will take one hour so a 2200mah I would charge no more than 2.2 amps and that will take around 1 hour to charge

Not surprised at all with 5A running through it. :o

If an hour sounds like a long charge to you, don't worry because you never run your cells down to completely empty anyhows. How many people keep running their car when it's crawling along at 1cm/s and the steering servo is stuttering?

If the cells aren't completely empty then you'll peak faster :)

Going a little off topic here but it is relevant.

How do you get rid of old battery's? I have a load of nicd's here that need to go. ;)

Find out where your local battery recycling place is (my dad has one at work, he's even pulled a few working ni-mh packs from it!), and dump them in there. Your local tip might accept them, and there might be a recycling box for them in a local supermarket or car park.

Sorry for bringing this back from almost Archive status. lol

I have recently just got one of these to charge my sons batteries and a UCA 50 for myself.

Seeing those pictures of the damage concerns me.

We have the following NiCd packs for my sons car.

1500 - Charge at 1.5AMP

1600 - Charge at 1.5AMP

2000 - Charge at 2.0AMP

2700 - Charge at 2.0AMP

3000 - Charge at 3.0AMP

3700 - Charge at 4.0AMP

Is this correct?

I've been charging my 3000 & 4700 cell NiCds on my UAC 50 set to Manual 5.0 AMP . Surely the batteries on the UAC 50 is safe guarded?

now I know most people charge at 1C but with most moden pack you can get away with 2c without any risks at all, I know most nanotechs can be, and thats half the charge time, I know some packs are rated higher than 2c and with some boasting 5c thats a 10min charge right there...althoug Im not sure how many packs would hold up to 5c so would not risk it, but I can honstely not see any harm in chargeing at 2c if you need to, just maake sure you condition your packs evey now and again by useing the appropriate feature on your charger... and some Highend packs boast 15C charge rates (I HIGHLY DOUBT THIS IS PLUASABLE WITHOUT MELTING THOUGH AND CHARGIN THIS FAST WILL REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF CYCLES POSSABLE AND MOST CHARGERS ARE UNABLE TO PUMP OUT THE AMPS NEEDED FOR CHARGING A 5000MAH AT 15 C)

but 2c I think is fine and all it could possable do is slightly lower the lifespand (number of charges) of your battery and the cheap prices of nanotechs Id say its worth it, although I know a lot of people are gonna slate me for this but I see no harm done.

BTW I charge my miniaviation 300mah batterys at 0.6amps as thats whats recomended and that give a 25-30 min charge time and is 2c...no harm done yet!

opps! Ignore it!

The charger can do very little to protect your batteries if you use the wrong charge settings, especially with nimhs- all it can really do is detect reversed polarity & shut off once it decides the voltage is high enough. If you try charging them too fast nimh will get red hot & may even vent or rupture ( shotgun cartridge style... ).

Do not charge at faster than the packs rated capacity- so 1000mah = 1amp, 3700mah = 3.7amps etc etc. A slower charge is always better as you will get more usable capacity ( a faster charge gives more punch if you use the batts straight after charging them ).

Excellent.

Thanks for the helpful advise.

I am going to be charinge some packs using both charges before myself and my son going out for some fun with our cars so will do some Saturday evening on the above advise and some the Sunday morning.
