davewilkinson
just stripped my first spur gear on my stock s-25 can anyone tell me what difference i will see on a 52 tooth spur as apposed to stock 49 tooth one also how does clutch bell work ie....number of teeth the ratios confuse me. thanks in advance
Big T
With the 52th spur gear you will get a very slight improvement in acceleration and loose a small amount of top speed. If you get a smaller clutch bell you will notice a difference with it accelerating quicker.....larger one means more top speed. I was running a 14th clutch bell with a 52th spur, it was good for off road. Hope this helps. Tony
rc007
when insalling the new spur gear its really important that you check all the screws around the engine plate, engine and tvps are present and tight as this can be a cause for the spur spripping. 300ZXZ31
Your slipper sould have stopped it from stripping though.

rc007
Your slipper sould have stopped it from stripping though. ← The slipper clutch shouldn't slip that easily IMO, what i think might of happened is the clutch bell may of got hot as the shoes would of beeen trying to "bite" the clutch bell and heat has been transfered to the spur gear making it soft. BigBlockKid
My Savage 4.6 went through 3 spur gears in the first couple of days, but now I found an ALMOST FOOLPROOF way of getting the mesh right......... 1. when change the spur (I remove the engine, How about you guys??) tighten the engine block back to the frame just enough not to move, with the gear TIGHT against the spur then roll the savvy back and forth a few times (this pushs the engine gear square with the spur(making sure the engine stays square to the frame as well then just nip up the 4 engine bolts and presto!!! ..........had the same plastic (49t) spur for nearly a month.. 2. just run a strip of paper through the meshing, should get a nice concertina effect, but should not have any cuts or tears (if so loosen bolts and roll again) sounds more complicated then it actually is.. rc007
yes if done correctly it's works great. I hate those heavy metal spurs and clutch bells people turn to when they keep stripping spurs as theres really no need for them(there expensive too). I have heard that people have had a few probs with the new ss with spur gears due to it being a bit over geared for the 28 engine, thus making the clutch work to hard making it hot. maybe a 47/16 would be more suited(only what i've heard i haven't owned a 4.6 engine before).
