Need a replacement for Tamiya WT-01 Mudblaster 2

BlackHole

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I've been having Tamiya mudbluster 2 WT-01 (with shock upgrades, bearing upgrades, diff putty, ran with a 2s lipo) for almost 8 years now and enjoyed every single time.

I'm looking for an upgrade for a similar RC car with a maximum budget of a £300. I'm looking for pre-build one this time because even though mudbluster 2 was fun, I'm tired of broken plastic and screws coming loose. WT-01 has too many screws and plastic that breaks on hard impact.

I'm not sure what's a good replacement as there's so many options. Would be great if I can have some suggestions.

This is my preference-

  • All wheel drive
  • less than £300
  • pre-built and more reliable than Mudbluster 2
  • A bit faster (Tamiya had a HPI Firebolt 15t Motor (540 Type))
  • Prefer a same size or bigger one (1/8  or 1/10 scale)
  • similar ground clearance (tamiya had about 2 inches of clearance)
  • Mudbluster 2 was a very good size, so similar length, width & height would be great

Many thanks

Bit over budget by £14.98p but these are meant to be a brilliant truck for the cash and reviews I have seen show its a tough truck 🙂. You could always see what's cracking off on ebay our facebook market place if you don't mind buying second hand, you might get a few lipos thrown in with them.

Are there any 1/8 scale ones?

Found these for a similar price but not much of a choice for around £350 -

(ftx seems to be bottoming out on jumps)

The rival mt8 didn't get as good of feedback as the 10th scale version it didn't come across as tough but I think they did a version change to the 8th scale so it's better, not sure if it's an upgrade pack you can get or they bolted it all on at the factory, Be worth a bit of goggle research see what they did as they seem like nice trucks.

The dr8 is cracking value for the cash and ftx parts are cheap, one our two of the dudes on here have them. @Naptime got one think he likes it 😄.

Best car I got but, mines in a state now! drove wet put away now I got wibbly tyres!!
I only been RC for a couple years now so that's why I'd reccomend the DR8 for a first 'fast' car. Deffo the BEST value for money 4s 40mph, 6s 60mph out the box strong race buggy not an all out basher or an all out racer, kinda little bit of both. Another thing I like as a newb is the flat panel body is so EASY to customise. I put extra rally lamps on mine an a spray job with my lucky 4X race number. It really is a fun truck.
I whish I could find a trophy truck shell that would work tho.
I would highly reccomend the yeah racing bolt on double fan. The extra bumpers, Also as much underside protection as you want to put on as they sit very LOW. The wheel hub extenders are essential for extra width against traction roll.
The rear suss mount is a weak spot so get spares. I was lucky to score a full carbon set from Ebay for £22 that hasn't smashed.... yet.

I know people like to tune the diffs from the box but, I haven't don mine yet. I would like more front traction so I'm gonna look into that.

@Naptime, what's the ground clearance on the DR8?  I used longer shocks on WT-01 for more ground clearance and it was 2 inches. That was alright, most of the time it wasnn't grounding but I guess it depends on how and where I drive I guess (haven't done a lot of jumps).

A bit over 2" I know some people put 1k oil in the shocks an bigger wheels on for bashing but, I prefer the look of the original wheels.
It is a big heavy rig so any jumps will ground out. I've only had mine on 4s an a few feet off the ground.

I’ve got 3 wt01 in different guises(2wd/4wd/4ws) and the MT10 or DR8 will be amazing upgrades for ya. Definitely next level stuff!

The decider for me is :- would a 1/8 be too big for where you run currently and will your current batteries fit what you are looking at or will they need upgraded too?
Another thing I tend to do is check for parts supply on stuff you know might break from the research you’ve done, it makes a big difference in my eyes as the Royal Mail up my way is in a tailspin to put it politely and had to factor in that even UK sourced parts can be at least a week at the moment.

An example is I have a Kyosho USA-1 and if Modelsport or Wheelspin don’t have parts in stock then I just use PlazaJapan as it’ll be here in the same time or quicker. Glad it doesn’t break too often.

I see people comparing CORALLY KAGAMA-4 and  ARRMA 1/10 VORTEKS 223S and  rival MT10
What you guys think? They seems similar too. Doing my own research at the moment before a final decision.

Got a Arrma the mojave 4s and its the first rc I have had that out the box just works no messing about, nothing leaking, no loose bits screws etc.

I own a Team Corally 4s the Syncro 4 which the kagama 4s is based on and its a really good works out the box no mods or anything. Two things I will say the diffs like to leak only a bit but that annoyed me, so I put a thicker O-ring in the centre diff and rear diff when I changed the oils and its golden 👍. Some of the new 4s and 6s range like to lose CVD pins, bit of heat shrink on the CVD to hold the pin in and adjust the droop and that fixes that. I have not had it on my 4s but my 6s Corally liked to fling CVD pins till I did that mod.

I did a alot of research and I think I will go with Rival MT8. I know there's lots of bad reviews for it but I don't take it to the skate park or use ramps to do high jumps, it's not my cup of tea. I didn't do any kind of jumps with my tamiya mudblaster 2 and even that had loose screws and broken plastic on the slightest bump.

I like the MT8's size and its affordable price. I’ll probably stick with a 4s and add the Suspension Upgrade Pack. The design, size, and price make it an easy choice.

JasonPerrinRCVlogs on youtube had positive feedback on MT8 than any other youtube channel I've seen.

Oh yeah new RC time 😃. Hope you upload pics when you get it, box fresh RCs are 🤤.  For the price these are going for I am amazed they are not as popular, I know bad publicity and all but that's made them cheaper 😆

I changed my mind agin
what @ad456m said really helped to decide the scale. When I'm going on trips I want to take this, so it make sense to have a 1/10 scale to carry it everywhere. I just love a 1/8 scale but for the sake of easy transpotation, I have to go with 1/10 scale.

Now, MT10 is reliable and hopefully I won't need constant repairs (unlike tamiya). Considering CORALLY KAGAMA-4 too. If price margin is higher, I'll go with MT10 but either way, I'll wait for a good sale 🤞
