Newbie. ESC confused. 2x Deans?

Hi all. Be kind. I'm new I've dug my 15 year old Hyper 7 out of the loft and am converting it to electric from nitro. I've been learning a lot, but didn't notice the wiring was like this before buying the kit. The nut and bold strip is done and the rebuild is underway, I've bought the 150A surpass hobby ESC and motor. but I don't know why there's are 2x Deans T battery input connectors into the ESC. Is it to connect 2 batteries if required? What do I do if only connecting only 1x 4S pack. Do I need a loop connector?

1st off i would change the deans connectors to XT90 connectors as i dont think the deans will handle the current

the 2 connectors are so you can us 2 batteries but if using 1 battery a loop connector will be required

As you say if using only one battery then a loop connector is placed in the second one. I would look at using different battery connectors such as XT90 as those Deans are probably fake and may get hot, which could result in issues.

Thanks guys! So chop out the black loop cable that joins the red and black? And chop off both deans?  And replace with a single XT90 that will give me a joint single battery connection from the source red and black?

I would replace both deans with XT90 connectors and get an xt90 loop cable like this

as you may in the future want to run 2x2s batteries instead

I got my ones from these last year and still working fine so must be legit 🙂. They do sell the yellow ones if you wish for that non stealth look.

Have a goggle on how to solder xt90`s as they can be fiddly to do the first time and can bugger up a good plug 😑. Buy a few spare just in case 👍

When soldering plug male and female connector together, so that heat is better dissipated and connections securely held in place. Use a clamp to hold the connector securely. Tin both connector and wire before soldering together. Dont forget placing heat shrink or supplied molded cap on wires before soldering. Non-genuine XT90 versions will work OK as used them for long time. They can be hard to disconnect but that can also be a benefit. The larger metal connection in XT90 allows more current to freely pass with less resistance cf Deans. Good practice to feel how hot motor, esc, connections and batteries are getting when bashing. If you only want to use one battery then just connect red and black wires from esc to connector. Be careful with gearing with the Surpass esc as it may not like getting too hot.
