First RC monster truck

Hi there

New to the forum and looking to get my first RC Monster Truck as a 38 year old.

My kids bought RTX Tracers (brushed) with Xmas money and we have had a great couple days with them and now thinking this might be a cool hobby for the 3 of us and for us all to learn a few things along the way.

Looking to purchase one for myself probably around the 1/10th scale and after numerous days research, top of my list I think is the Team Associated MT10 v2.

Are there any others you would consider or put above this?

I also like the look of the Arrma Majove 4s which I realise is not a monster truck and may be a bit more than I was looking to spend.

Also, what are the go to sites for ordering from? We got my sons Tracers from RC Geeks.

Many thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

Its all down to budget really. The MT10 is arguably the best possible choice. Although Ive not owned one that does seem the go to! Just factor in a decent charger and lipo to the budget.

I tend to use Modelsport and Wheelspin, but theres no reason not to use RC Geeks if they have every thing in stock and youve received good service off them.

Have fun!

Yes MT10 is always a good choice but also the Maverick MT is getting a lot of good reviews this is an updated one but its also a large 1/10th

if you wanted 1/14th fast and strong there is also models from MJX hypergo range

Id definitely go for 1/10th or bigger. That Maverick does look a good choice

Yep the first incarnation was a little hit and miss but on the grapevine this mk2 is said to be a good un, i had the early one and it was real fast especially when it hit me in the ankle

And don't forget, if you're running them wet, you'll need to spend a decent amount of time on aftercare, or they'll rust and start having issues. Most common is seized or destroyed bearings, this will happen when put away wet. Don't think that because the box states "waterproof", that you can drive through puddles carefree and not pay your penance.

For the above reason, I'm a fair weather basher, just don't have the time for cleaning and drying.

How much are you wanting to spend and what are you really wanting from the model?

I don't have MT10, but I really like the look of their SC10 stadium truck.

However, might I suggest a different route: https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/tamiya-konghead-6x6-g6-01-409212

Tamiya Konghead. Its a kit, so you'll get to build it, which is frankly half the fun of RC cars. And you can dictate what sort of spec you want in terms of setup. The Kinghead is a great general use monster truck and unique with 6wd. Giving it very good off road ability, but it'll run on grass, dirt or even tarmac well.

I run mine on 2S LiPo and a 10.5T brushless motor.

If you want silly big air and intend to try and break an RC by launching it like a rocketship, it might not be the model for you. But for a fun to build and drive vehicle I really rate the Konghead.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Budget is around the £500 mark.

At the moment I am looking at the following list of items:

Associated Rival MT10 Brushless RTR Truck V2 - Red
SkyRC T200 Duo AC/DC 12A Charger
Voltz 5000mAh 3S 11.1v 50C Hardcase LiPo Stick Pack Battery
Overlander Lipo Safe Sack

SkyRC Charging Cable XT60 Female to Deans Male

Questions:

1. I believe the MT10 has a Deans connector as standard which is the same as my kids FTX Tracer. Model sport look to offer a service to change this to any other connector type. Is this worth doing and if so is there a better connector I should be looking at?

2. Is the charger in the list above a decent option?

3. Assuming I stick with Deans, is the above battery a good choice.

I will be factoring in a box of some sort for LIPO storage having done some reading on this also.

I have the v1 MT10, it was my first brushless RC car having had a couple of nitros in the past.  It's been brilliant fun and I have almost the identical kit to that you list above.  I do drive it with a bit of mechanical sympathy but it's survived some pretty big end-over-ends and tough landings.  Don't think you can go far wrong with the MT10 to be honest.

That’ll be a great start. You could probably get a better lipo, but for the ease of making one big order from one shop I think thats fine. Good shout on buying a better than usual charger, charging two lipo’s at once will help you enjoy the hobby much more

I personally prefer XT60s or XT90s over Deans, but if your kids have Deans on their stuff I can see why you want to keep it simple.

I think youll be very happy with the above order
