However, my theory of staying 2S to save the diff was wrong. Yes i stripped the rear diff….

@TommyC @mydoddy69 whats the diff upgrade options?

Ah that’s a bugger! Have you had it apart to see what exactly happened?

The ‘proper’ mini maxx upgrade diff is TRX10780. I have 2 on order which had an estimated delivery date end of December which has now changed to end of January.

complete diffs trx6788(front) and 6789(rear) will fit but have 37 ring gears.
12/47 pinion and ring gear sets 6778(front) and 6779(rear). The pinions aren’t compatible although the rear one would be compatible with the centre diff or slipper upgrade.

Diff can be built up using parts;

carrier 5381

ring gear 6778/6779

spider gears and outdrives 6882X

There are heavy duty options available for this diff. Not sure if they’ll fit the 10780?

carrier 3978

4 spider gears 6783

outdrives 6782

seems those stock diffs can only just about handle stock out of box 2S set up

Been running mine 3s without a hitch so far. I did replace plastic bushings in the diffs with aluminium. I also managed to fit 0.1mm shims on each of the pins in the rear diff but not the front. So my guess is tolerances differ and that’s why some people have been unlucky while other haven’t.

I’ve got loads of bushings and shims if anyone wants any. Had to buy 50 of each to get what I needed!

I went cheap and bought my diff setup from Jennys RC bit of fiddling about and job done.

jato diffs

stampede 4x4 centre shaft and outdrive pinions

slash  slipper set up

revo 38t spur

and I made up a simple brass spacer for the front bearings.

I think with shipping and tax it was under £50 👍

I can do standing backflips with no bother on 3s 😂

I need to re visit this post when Ive got more time. Are the 10780 upgrades just drop in or do you need any other parts?

They’re drop in replacements specifically for the mini maxx.

So if I was to do this “properly”. Would this be all I need?

Thats everything right? Do I need 2x pinion gears?

Its a hell of alot of money to spend on a Mini BUT bare in mind other than the charger I bought the rest of the electronics I had doing nothing and I can sell the stock motor/esc/radio to recoup some funds?

Just a bit confused as to what is and isnt compatiable

That’s everything I’ve got on back order. I do have a niggling doubt that the diffs are planetary and the ‘bevel’ refers to the ring gear. The housing does look different to the 10781 carrier which states its for planetary gears.

I’ve managed to sell off the battery/charger and tx/rx. Can’t seem to shift the motor/ESC for £40.

I might not even fit the diffs if my shimmed diffs hold up.

Its only money eh?

Yep and like they say you cant take it with you, if you knew how much i have spent on my return to carp fishing you would be posting a shocked pic! i do feel sorry for people buying this model as traxxas could of and should of done a better job on this, and i have mentioned before but my 2 year old 1/16th 3S capable hypergo is still going strong nowt broke other than a bent wheelie bar, but i will also say IF Traxxas had put strong diff`s in from the start this mini maxx would of been a nicer truck

Whats the brass spacer all about? Did you have to cut the stampede shaft down?

Yes the spacers that slide onto the same pins as the gears. My suspicion was they melt and the gears move along the pins

So you made brass 1's to replace the plastic spacers ?

So. I found these a while back and I thought I was cutting edge, turns out even Modelsport stock them

I now know GPM do a full alloy diff upgrade, which Ill probably end up with, but for now Ill rebuild my broken diff so got that all cleaned out. HOWEVER…..

Ive never dealt with a Planetary Diff, and I dont understand what Im doing? I genuinely cant work it out off the exploded views? Why do I only appear to need 2x brass bushings not 4? Why is the diff case stepped? Are the 4 gears meant to line up or are they offset? Im flumoxxed! Haha

They’re offset. The housing has 2 raised bits which act as the bushings for that side.

here’s mine with the aluminium bushings. You’ll also see the 0.1mm shims on top of the sun gear and 2 planetary gears. They’re also in between the other planetary gears and bushings.

Youre a legend thanks.  Thats how I thought it was but it felt very tight

The planetary gear on the left looks like it’s hitting both sun gears. It should only be making contact with the top one. Is that bottom sun gear pushed home properly?
