Garage Find - RTR Nitro RS4 MT

Hi All,

I recently dug out my old Nitro MT, which has been sitting in the garage for 15+ years, and thought I would try to get it running again.

I stopped using it when I damaged the Spur Gear on it, looks like the mounting had shifted resulting in the spur gear and the clutch becoming misaligned and causing teeth on both to get damaged. I never attempted to do anything with it until now - also haven't touched another RC car since then so I have effectively zero knowledge.

I was looking to try and find some replacement parts and hadn't really appreciated these things would become difficult to find with a good 15+ years passing and everything being decommissioned.

Do you have any recommendations on how I could get the car up and running again, are these parts something I can find/source or would I need to update the engine completely to something more modern?

Ideally, I would like to replace the Spur gear and clutch and leave everything else, however, I am open to upgrading the engine to something modern (and most importantly available!) if there is anything that will fit the existing frame etc. Im keen to learn and happy to spend time tinkering rather than simply buy a replacement. The reason for picking this out the garage was as much to enjoy a bit of tinkering as it is using the car.

Thanks,

Luke

Thank you, I've contacted a local RC dealer who is going to look into the spur for me see if there is a replacement available. That one may do the trick as well. Engine is pretty clean and wasn't used very much so I'm sure it will start up fine. Hopefully avoid the need for a complete replacement of I can sort this issue out.

  • 2 months later...

You may need to clean out the fuel tank, fuel lines and engine from any fuel residue before you try to start it. The oil in the fuel left over from the last run can leave a bit of a sticky mess. I'm doing exactly the same thing at the moment with my T-Maxx which has been in the loft for almost 20 years.

I used IPA to do clean, and replaced the lines to be on the safe side.

Also check the air filter, if it's the foam type it may have perished.

The Mt became revamped with MT2

I'd be checking online manuals to see if they are the same part number

Sadly with Nitro been on the down and out.... I'd say repair and cherish it!

espically if it is a original MT! as they won't be as common these days! let alone the mt2!
