Slash worth a look in 2024?

Quite fancy a 4x4 short course truck. Always loved the look and idea of a Slash, but never got round to owning one. But they are playing on my mind at present.

I know they are the truck that really started the popularity of Short Course instead of Stadium trucks. But are they still worth considering in 2024?

I see there are three types of 4x4 Slash:

  • BL-2S - which is a mouthful to say...
  • VXL
  • Ultimate

At first I thought the BL-2S looked good, but it is only 2S and I'd really like 3S power. I did wonder if you could upgrade the BL-2S for less money than buying a VXL. But £360 vs £415 is only £55, so I reckon you'd be hard pressed to match or exceed the VXL performance and spec on that budget.

The VXL according to some YouTube vids has smaller driveshafts and shock towers than the BL-2S, although the Traxxas website says the VXL has the same upgrades now. Not sure all sales listings show this in the UK, so I'd want to check. Assuming this is the case the VXL seems better value.

However, once you get to this league of spending (probably using a PayPal in 3 or some other way to spread the cost), I have to then say, is it worth spending the £560 on the Slash Ultimate. It comes with a few changes, although anti roll bars and the LCG chassis would seem to be the big ticket items in terms of performance changes.

I haven't checked individual parts prices, but is the Ultimate's performance worth the £145 extra? I'd guess yes, if racing. But does anyone race Short Course Trucks in the UK?

Now the curve ball, while the Traxxas appeals alot ans is the truck I'd really, i.e. I like the look, styling and design. I also like that parts supply is great and likely to continue for many many years. 3rd party, not just Traxxas themselves.

But while looking online I stumbled across this:

Associated Pro4 SC10 RTR

https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/associated-pro4-sc10-rtr-1335740

On face value it would seem to be equal to the VXL pretty much. But it is only £290, considerably cheaper than even the 2S-BL. --- Am I missing something obvious here?

Thoughts...

Had an Ultimate hcg back in the day, loved it. Short course are great bashers, can be very tough compared to open wheel cars.

Traxxas will always have third party parts available, they need them in most cases. I think I was running MIP shafts, the plastic CVDs were weak.

Also had a Senton 6S, really regret selling that one.

I have been having at look at these trucks as well and it's hard to pick 🙈

https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/associated-pro4-sc10-rtr-1335740 I think this based off the MT10 which is a known tough truck so its got the durability seems to handle well from the youtube vids I have watched, not sure on parts support not looked into that.

This seems nice but again parts seem bit on the slim side 😕

Have been watching some reviews. I do still "want" a Slash. But I think there is no denying they are over priced, esp in the UK and to some extent under performing too.

On the flip side, I can hardly find a negative word on the Associated Pro4 SC10. It does look like a cracking deal and is more on par with the Slash Ultimate spec wise or at least performance wise.

Need to have a think, just spent some money on some other things. So this won't be an instance purchase.

I know traxxas are expensive but you know i think they are worth it for a few reasons, 1 spares are cheap in comparison to other brands, 2 parts are readily available, 3 they are well engineered and 4 they really are tough little suckers.

So for example i have a maverick and it likes eating diffs i couldnt tell you how many i have replaced in it but parts are also cheap so at least thats something, exactly a month ago today i got an arrma and it has broken pretty much every time i have had it out and parts are expensive for it, i know traxxas practices are questionable but they do make a great vehicle.

I remember my hpi cars breaking quite a lot as well in comparison, the only other brand i have which is equally as tuff as traxxas is a cen gst, only issue with that was the stock engine which it no longer has so is bulletproof now but parts arent readily available for it
