Tamiya has just announced the 1/10 Hornet Evo Kit, a modern update to their iconic Hornet, first introduced 40 years ago. The Hornet Evo is set to carry on its legacy as one of the all-time RC greats.

Well, this is a surprise!

 

This is the sort of conversion I wanted to do years ago (there was a popular, Japanese youtube video, where someone had done it and it looked great). However, I lost interest and sold my Hornet. Just got repeatedly frustrated with the Hornet's lack of ability. This will utterly transform how it drives.

I'm sure it will be much more capable than the OG Hornet, but then, to me at least, it's no longer a Hornet.  I think I'll just keep hold of my childhood memories of my '84 Hornet bouncing down the road (quite slowly)...  In my 11 yr old eyes it was a rocket ship, the pinnacle of RC tech..., well compared to my dad's Cheetah it was 😊

Genuinely thing this is a good idea.

 

I mean...it's a Tamiya with proper suspension and ball bearings. Less good will be the fact that it will cost a fortune for what it is, but it does at least show some concept of how to keep a model looking like it used to be, but working like it should. Oil damped shocks. Damn. Revolutionary stuff.

 

Incidentally, I planned on picking up a Lunchbox to do something similar with. Graft on proper suspension. End up with a usable vehicle that looked stock from a distance, but wasn;t.

How do you define cost a fortune?

Maybe a little pricey compared to a DT-03. But not really all that expensive in the world of RC.

regarding the price of it, well this is my two penneth,

 

if you are one of the Tamiya fans in it for the nostalgia etc. then i would have thought the original would be the way to go and at almost half the price, buy two, shelf one and use the other.

 

or if you want a 2wd buggy that drives better, as @ad456m has said, the Kyosho would run rings around it, ive not search but i would have thought there would be a fair few tasty buggies out there that would do the job so much better.

 

but hey, its all down to personal preference, if they did this to a lunchbox, it would be hard to convince myself that i don’t need one….

I guess. TBH I don't know this model from Kyosho, is it also a re-re or just a base kit? Can't see much about it I'd want to go for over the Hornet Evo, listing also says no shock oil provided??? And no ESC. so it is slightly more money than the Tamiya.

Don't get me wrong. I have no nostalgia or affection for the Hornet. It wasn't a car I experienced back in the day. But I can see the logic of what Tamiya are doing.

 

It is a reasonably capable entry level buggy for people entering the hobby or wanting their first kit build. As for the Kyosho running rings round it. I doubt there will many of either being raced and as a basher there really is no measure, hence why a group of people can bash monster trucks and buggies together at the same time.

 

So I can see this kit also appealing to the "Dad" who had an original and wants an RC for their child to get into the hobby.

 

I can also see it appealing to those people that had (or currently have) a Hornet as being the buggy they always wanted it to be or wanted to mod it to be.

 

I imagine it will sell very well and be very popular.

Well it's tickling my fancy only built two crawlers from scratch since being back into the hobby and building a modern version of a cool old school tamiya is started to look like a nice way spend the winter months in-between maintenance on the fleet. I shouldn't really be thinking of getting anything else to eat into hobby time I've already got a big ol'box of 40k orks to build and paint 😅.
