Advice repowering a 5B flux

Hello all,

I'm looking for some advice to change my electric 5B to reduce the speed and acceleration. At the moment it feels  overpowered and much less controllable compared to the 4WD delivery of my DBXLE.

They both have the same setup at the moment - 8s/780kv and the 5B has a 14/57 gearing from memory.

I have a Mk2 Escort bodyshell I want to run on the Baja - being RWD will be realistic too so I'm looking to make the performance a bit more scale - driftable rather than a wheelie machine and less manic top speed (probably halve it)

What changes are going to help achieve this? I guess a stiffer rear springs and a thick gear oil, perhaps add a bit of weight up front?

What should I be looking to change on the drivetrain front though? Stick with the 8s? If I drop the pack voltage I'd have to change the motor kv to suit so I don't see the logic in that? I could try different gearing but obviously need to be careful not to over or undergear the motor...

Cheers for the guidance

Darren

What? You don't change the motor because of lowering voltage. Just try running it on 6S and 7S, it'll run fine and with lower temps. I used to get around 37mph on 6S, but I think that was on a 17 tooth pinion.

Pics when you get that shell fitted!

Thanks mate. I dunno, I've managed to get myself totally confused 🤣 I'd thought the motor kV meant  it's speed was dictated by pack voltage and that the sweet spot was around the 30k rpm mark.

So in my head it made sense that lowering the pack voltage (I was thinking it'd be easy to halve it to 4s as I used two 4s for the 8s setup) would then mean the motor was running cooler but much slower than it'd want and with a much bigger current draw because the voltage was lower.

I suppose another option and a mega-easy one might be to keep everything the same,  make sure the gearing is something tame and just set the wide open throttle on the ESC to be about half stick. That'd work right?

It's a max 5 gen 2 esc - I can also dial the punch down and tweak settings a bit in there.

I'll definitely get some pictures once the shell is mounted. I'm going to need to lengthen the wheelbase a bit to get it looking right - I'm putting some rivnuts in the motor plate to allow me to set it back by about 20mm which should sort that 👍🏻

Hmm, that can work, but mid throttle can also be where the ESC is working hardest. Your safest bet is definitely 6 or 7 cells instead of 8.
