Brushless groms

After seeing so many YouTube vids of brushless conversions on the grom I thought I’d have a go with my typhon. I originally intended to use a 10bl60 but it wasn’t going to fit without chopping some major bracing out of the chassis. So I went for a 2435 4500kv motor and 16bl30. Managed to get it all in without robbing any of the battery tray.

I shredded the standard diffs in about ten minutes running on 3s. I have the Arrma upgrade diffs on back order but it seems most Arrma spares are in short supply at the moment. So I ordered some cheap aluminium diffs off eBay for £20 a pair. I couldn’t get them apart to check the grease because the screws are made of cheese. But they seem to be holding up after a few more battery packs.

The motor was getting incredibly hot running on the standard 18T pinion. Perhaps because I’ve geared it up with the bigger granite grom wheels and tyres? I’ve fitted a cheap 30mm fan but not had the chance to test its effectiveness yet. I’m thinking I might need to make some holes in the shell for airflow? I’ve also reduced the timing on the motor as I understand this helps with temps? Again, not really tested this adjustment yet.

This thing is crazy fast already on 3s. I would say it easily does 45mph. Not really sure the 60a sec would add anything as I’m not sure it could handle the power. Has anyone here done it yet? I’d also be interested to know if anyone has converted a mojave yet? Is the chassis bigger than the typhon?

Snapped the 2mm motor shaft on the quicrun motor. Reading up on it a bit more it seems I’m not the only one that’s had problems fitting this motor in a grom. Got a 2435 with a 2.3mm shaft coming from Amazon today.

My 2435 from Amazon turned up but it had a 2mm shaft. So I’ve now ordered another 2.3mm one off eBay but it’s coming from china.

I picked up a mojave grom yesterday. So much more room under the shell and the chassis is longer so I’m going to squeeze in the 60A quicrun and a 2845 that I originally intended for the typhon.

@TommyC I've ordered a typhon grom, some aliexpress diffs and a couple of brushless systems to try.

I've ordered one of the hobbywing 2435 motors, hopefully it doesn't break the shaft.

What other sets are you going to try?

I've ordered a surpass 2440 3200kv

A hobbywing 16bl30 and motor combo.

And I've got a 60 amp hobbywing esc and a few motors I tried in some of the wltoys buggy.

You won’t fit the 2440 in unless you put the esc in the battery tray. There’s only 38mm spare the way I’ve got it and the esc is touching the servo. Trouble with the typhoon is the shell leaves absolutely no room to stack things up.

I will go brushless with my mojave in the future but I don't need crazy speed just a bit more than stock. For a brushed car it's prity nippy but I am thinking about one of the grom furitek combos once readily available.

That's the plan for my Mojave grom.

I'm going to start with a 3200kv motor and go from there.

Oh that furitek does look good. Where might you be able to get that in the uk when it’s released?

@TommyC Do you have a link for the 2435 with 2.3mm shaft?

I got it off eBay

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225020856123?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=fNbs01m_Ri-&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=iDGWgmgCTnO&var=523945025571&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

the instructions that came with still state this size motor has a 2mm shaft but it is indeed 2.3mm.

Got two motors from aliexpress.

Fake castle looking things, no idea if they're any good.

Had trouble finding motors at 35mm length with a 2.3mm shaft.

Grom motors

The 3650kv is rated for 4s and the 4600kv 3s.

No intention of running 4s but it's nice to know it will take it.

Both motors 27 quid delivered.

Hopefully dpd deliver my typhon grom without any issues.

So it didn’t take long to kill the soft case 3s overlander battery which fitted so perfectly in the tray. After much searching the only hard case I could find was this reedy 1400mah.

I’ve got all 3 groms now but only converted the typhon to brushless. I sold the electronics but think I’ll keep the other 2 and use the batteries as there just doesn’t seem to be many hard case options that fit, 2s or 3s. Has anyone any suggestions?

Also keen to keep the tx’s and pair with a slr300 as the slt2 is better suited for when the kids have a go and I don’t want them using my dumbo!

Ordered these from the US in the end as they just never came in at my LHS. 3 sets for £125 delivered in 7 days.

Converted the mojave today. Managed to fit in a 2845 3100kv motor geared up to 21T with a 10bl60 esc. This is the sensored version, not waterproof but I had some corrosion x turn up today to take care of that. Also got a heat sink and cooling fan in too.

Running on 3s it did a comparatively slow 35mph. I guess ultimately kv matters most when going for speed? Highest kv I can get away with in a 2845 is 3800 without exceeding the 60a esc. I think the typhons 45mph is going to be hard to beat as the bigger motors will only hit 50000rpm as opposed to the 2435’s 60k max.

I got a skyrc gsm020. It’s just a small square box that uses gps and Bluetooth connection to a phone app.
