Hi and welcome, I have the charisma coyote sca1e, and the best thing I did was fit a hobby wing 1060 esc and a Dumbo rc transmitter and receiver. It totally transformed the driving experience, giving better throttle control and a better drag brake modulation, hope this helps šŸ˜„

Fitting a different tx and rx makes a lot of sense. Had a look and they arenā€™t too expensive either which is nice. Any specific recommendation? Looking online I see the 350 tx mentioned a lot but that may be a bit overkill (canā€™t see myself using so many channels but also donā€™t know what theyā€™re used for anyway) and its a decent price jump compared to some of their other ones. Seen a couple different models on amazon for around Ā£35 with sales and vouchers and such so may look at one of those (EDIT - can also find the 350 everyone seems to like on youtube from aliexpress for ~ Ā£44 with an rx, didnā€™t think to check ali before). How much difference would just upgrading the rx and tx make? Or do I realistically need to change the esc as well to see decent results?Ā

Might be worth investing in a Hobbywing 1080 quickrun esc, with this you can set a lot of parameters including amount of reverse and the punch rate of forward reverse, they are still the best brushed esc on the market

Ā

Looked at the 1080 before as heard it's highly recommended, but donā€™t know how modular the electronics are, if its easy to just change one component. I also see thereā€™s a seperate programmer for it, is that required or can it be programmed with out it and the extra device just is more user friendly? Whats the difference between the 1060 and 1080? Being able to limit max reverse speed does sound useful.

Ā

Cost just starts adding up pretty quickly when looking at all these potential upgrades and parts, I do seem to keep picking up expensive rabbit hole hobbies šŸ˜‚.Ā

As a first upgrade the 1080 would give the biggest single benefit, it's pretty easy to install and would work with existing motor and radio the programme card used to come with 1080, you may get a used one on ebay for less money the difference between a 1060 and 1080 is night and day

Usually its the motor/esc combination that gives better driving control. A 1080 esc is usually the recommended upgrade and the program card makes it easier to change settings, otherwise you need to use the esc button to go through menu options and follow sequence of flashing LEDs.

Thank you both, this is very helpful and exactly what I needed to know at this stage! Will probably get a new tx and rx anyway (maybe not now, weā€™ll see how I feel about chucking the cash at it, it is tempting though) as the extra channels will likely come in handy for stuff like lights. The flashing LED settings stuff is the same as in the charisma so I know how to navigate that, but may consider the card as well.Ā

Right, took the plunge and grabbed myself a 1080 + program card, dumbo rc 350 and 6 channel receiver off of ali (at reasonable prices, not suspiciously low ones). Now to spend the next week or two eagarly awaiting their arrival!Ā :lol:Ā

have a look on youtube for setting up the 1080, i was a late convert to them but they do perform really well

Welcome to forum.Ā

1080 is a great choice.Ā

I regards to the wheels and tyres, are they beadlocks or glued?Ā

If they're glued do your best to dry them out and block the vent holes if u plan on going through water.Ā

If they're beadlocks, strip down dry out the foams and seal the vent holes with some sealant.Ā

nice radio gear also has another benefit, you can use the same transmitter on multiple cars with all their settings intact etc all you need is a new receiver for a new model and switch between them on the transmitter, the 1080 is a decent esc i have one in my hobao dc1 truck and it hasn't skipped a beat šŸ™‚

Disassembled a tire today, my word are the foams sopping wet, and it hasnā€™t been driven in water for over a week. Definitely need to take apart the others and get them properly dry.Ā

If you're going to drive in water a lot, have a look on AliExpress at Injora silicone inserts, will be getting some for my crawlers as last winter I had some foam inserts freeze solid šŸ¤”

Also, is it worth moving this thread to the scale crawler's thread rather than introductionsšŸ˜€

Ā

Just had a look at these, seem interesting. Think Iā€™ll just seal the vent hole for now and see how much that helps, now I know its easy enough to get the foams out itā€™s not as daunting if they need deying out again. But will bear them in mind, may be worth it in future. Does anyone know if water would get past those? I know it wonā€™t get absorbed by anything but standing water stuck in the tires would still not be great. Ā

Ā

Yeah this is not really an intro post anymore, its just easier to ask questions here than keep making new threads.

Ā

Can admin move the thread to the scale section? šŸ¤” This is becoming more a progress thread with questions thrown in haha.Ā

Ā

About to remake my mudflaps, last attempt used a makeshift bracket that kept getting bent so going to cut new ones and attach them directly to the shell instead.Ā

Oooh, got my rx and tx today, they sent the wrong reciever, they sent me the 6 channel with light control and gyro, rather than the normal 6 channel non gyro non light control I originally ordered with the rx. Which is a good thing, because I just bought the same one that theyā€™ve sent me (but minus gyro) the other day when I realised itā€™d do my taillights correctly. So now I donā€™t have to wait another week for that to arrive to be able to sort my lights, yay!Ā šŸ˜

Right, the new reciever seems to be having issues. It wonā€™t turn left fully when under the weight of the car. Turns right just fine. Swap it back to the old rx and tx and it turns normally bith directions. Endpoints calibrated and whatnot, but no luck. Messaged dumborc on facebook to see if they have any ideas on how to solve (though it turns out DUMBO RC OUTLET STORE isnā€™t their official store, so kept that part quiet) Iā€™m hoping the new one I ordered the other day will work when it arrives but my dad told me to tell the company about it and try and get them to sort it so I have. Darn shame.Ā

Ā

Worked out how to set the lights up so they all run off the rx rather than the tamiya box which is nice, the controller/transmitter seems nice too.Ā

Ā

So more waiting and faffing it seems šŸ˜”

Ā

Servo also making an odd crackling noise.

Lightā€™s been sorted so all work correctly, headlights are ace, nice and bright, canā€™t wait to get the lenses for them as well.Ā

Ā

ESC and new Reciever still in transit, so maybe this time next week Iā€™ll finally be able to drive it around again. šŸ˜…

If you disconnect the servo horn, set the steering trim to zero, centralise the servo, reconnect the servo horn then set the end points it could solve your problem šŸ‘

Ā

Tried that, no luck unfortunately. Measured the frequency going to the servo when turning and its getting less when turning left (by as much as a third less). When thereā€™s no weight on it, it turns fully, its as soon as the weight goes on it that it isnā€™t able to turn enough. Changing endpoints and trims doesnā€™t make it turn any further either.

Ā

Iā€™m just hoping the new receiver isnā€™t the same.Ā

ESC and program card arrived today. Program card isnā€™t the same as the one Iā€™ve seen online and the written list of options is different too. Maybe this is what I get for trying to save money and using Aliexpress? šŸ˜”Ā

Ā

Havenā€™t tried it yet. Bit disheartened at the minute. It was also bundled with the ESC (like the transmitter and receiver were) so worried I wonā€™t be able to do a partial return if I need to.Ā

Ā

Anyone used this card with the 1080? Iā€™m assuming its an old model that isnā€™t compatible? EDIT - apparently the box is the same, they just stick different stickers on the front depending on which type its meant to be bundled with? So I may have prematurely panicked.

New reciever here wednesday, so fingers crossed that works.

When my son and i fitted the hobbywing fusion systems to our crawlers the fusion system came with a sticker that went onto the boxes we already hadĀ

You might be able to pick up the appropriate sticker for your escĀ :good:

Yep, just opened up the 1080 box and saw the sticker. So thats very handy! Will have to have a play around with it, may take some trial and error to get it set up to my liking. Looking forward to it though.Ā

Oh. My. Word! What a difference the 1080 makes.Ā šŸ˜²

Ā

Itā€™s much more controllable, far less jerky, it reverses in a more controlled manner (set the max to 50%), I can adjust the drag brake on the fly and the high-pitched whine it used to make has completely gone. Itā€™s brilliant!!Ā

Ā

Now just need to organize the lighting wires, put the battery connector in an easier to unplug position without needing to remove the shell (need to get used to having to unplug it after turning the car off), put the ESC power button in an easy to reach spot and then on Wednesday I can plug the new reciever in and hopefully have proper steering again! And then itā€™ll be almost ā€˜doneā€™. Just need the headlight lenses to arrive.Ā

Ā

Thank you for the recommendations, loving the upgrades.
