Bargain Associated Rival MT8 RTR Truck Brushless 6s?

Recommended Posts

As above, Model sport are banging these out £140 off! Worth a punt or is there inherent problems? Just dubious as to why theyr'e cheap.. had enough of my broken Vortex 😠
Cheers all

Aye the MT8 is a bit 💩 from what I remember of the review videos on YouTube when it came out. Shame really I was interested in getting one after how good the MT10 is supposed to be. You could get a MT10 if your after a good basher but that FTX DR8 Desert Racer Yorkshireman mentioned is a cracker for the money, one of the lads round the track I use has one he loves his and its rapid 😀

The service kit has greatly improved the mt8, availability of rpm parts, redcat alloy parts and the Facebook groups have fixes for just about  all the other issues the rig has had so it's becoming the rig we all wanted but I think it will be improved more if they release a V2 (the teal one is just a second shell colour so not really a v2) especially if it's the one they had at the 43 block party that hoonigan inspired shell looks killer

So what you're saying is the 140 quid you'd save, you'll have to spend anyways getting it up to scratch?  Not much of a discount

I thought there must be a reason they're cheap 🤔 had enough getting 5mins out of me vortex before it breaks every flipping time! An I don't even drive that hard (not in the 5 bloody minutes anyway) the FTX is looking like the better option especially with the low repair prices!!

Thing is I'm not really into desert trucks more retro 60's 70's pick ups, So.

Is it easy enough to mount another style shell?

Cheers

Looks like the body and cage come off in one go with the body posts poking from the chassis to fit another shell on so maybe you can fit another shell to your liking? and sell the original shell & cage to get some cash back.

Yeah looks like it has regular body posts, just gotta find a nice shell. Only old school trucks I've found seem to be nitro

The reason they are cheap is because the first production batches were junky and put people off (the factory used the wrong type of plastics it mustn't have been the same factory as redcat used for the kaiju and the kaiju has some inherent problems that weren't addressed pre launch of the mt8 for the global market) and everyone thought it would be as tough as the mt10 or tougher (which had its own issues when team associated got the moulds from helion but the strength was there in the design), from the teal body release onwards the production seems to have improved and the service pack team associated are supplying now fixes the major reported problems with rpm for the aftermarket touch but team associated that are a race car brand so development into bashers is an ongoing thing traxxas and arrma are decades ahead of them,

Ftx only have 2 decent rebrands under their umbrella the tracer and dr8 the rest are cheaply produced cars that have cheap parts because they sell loads 🤣, I'd personally avoid the vantage, bugsta and carnage based ones all the ones I've bashed along side have died after gentle impacts (kid dropped it 8 inches and broke an arm and hub for the 5th time) or self destructed (spur gears motor mounts and diffs are the bits I've seen issues with even the upgraded metal ones)

The mt8 is 313mm wheel base so common crawler/ 1/8 rig size, the kaiju shell is square body GMC/ ford/ Chevy 70s style but it'll need importing from the USA

They blew it you mean.  All that good will earned through the MT10.  Shot to pieces cause no one at AE bothered to drive the thing hard before release

Back to the DR8, I'm 99% aboot to order! But, newb question. What's better single or dual batteries? Double would be a hassle for me to charge but, are there any advantages performance wise? I'm new to this option so I'm guessing I would use two 2s to get 4s etc

Aaaand what needs upgrading or spares to stock up on while I'm ordering. Tomley mentioned the swing arm retainer bits?

Found this FTX DR8 1:8 RTR 4WD Desert Racer - Red FTX5495R (align-trex.co.uk) has the battery tray size even FTX didn't have that on the website unless I missed it 😄 also bit cheaper on here as well.

Aye 2x 2s will get you 4s but I personally hate charging up multi packs to run a car so slowly building up a little collection of 4s and 6s packs.

I am trying to run my 6s cars with 1x6s pack now instead of 2x 3s as I hate charging loads of battery's at once. The weight difference isn't much, any way you run it 6s is going way a ton 😆

Bigger Mah lipos going give you more run time but can make it handle worse because they weigh more, all my lipos are around the 5000Mah range as it gives me good run times and they don't weigh that much it makes my trucks handle like pap and the bonus less weight less overall mass you will be throwing around in crashes and jumping as it can help minimize damage.

* 2 x 2S or 2 x 3s 5000mah or 1 x 6s 5000mah if using 1 x 6s battery then a bridging adapter will also be required batteries should be 50c and also fitted with an XT90 Connector. The battery tray measures 154mm x 51mm with the end foam insert removed.

ETRONIX Female XT90 Bridging Adaptor with 10G Wire (Loop Lead) ET0857 (modelsport.co.uk) <...in case you run one phat boi battery 😄

Not that I am aware of only thing that happens to me when using 2x3s is that if one of the batteries is naff like its got a dodgy cell then low voltage kicks in and stops my fun 😑  also what I have seen in my own batteries is that one of the lipos sometimes gets stressed more than the other, the voltages are all over the place on one pack and on the other it is fine shut off at 3.3v spot on  and these lipos I know are good on there own.

Buy what is good for your wallet if you can get a 2s or 3s cheap buy a few and see what you like or get 4s or 6s packs for convenience 🙂

this is another good place to get cheap but good lipos LiPo Battery for RC Cars, Planes & Boats | Quality LiPo, Low Price | HobbyKing

Turnigy Rapid ( cheap black ones ) & Turnigy Heavy Duty lipos are good value for money.

Sorry,  I'm a bit late here as I see you've already put your order in but if you're getting the V2 version then it will come with the alloy suspension holder upgrade. Only thing I would recommend is the hub extenders to give you a bit more stability....after that then it's up to you if you go for more aluminium bits. Hope you enjoy it mate 👍
