Popular Post Kpowell911
Hello everyone. As is quite obvious now, my collection is transitioning from fast brushless bashers, to old shelfers that I desired as a kid. This obviously means Tamya's. They also 'fit' my lifestyle a bit more now, as Ive recently welcomed my beautiful first Daughter into the world in January, so going 'out' with the R/Cs isn't happening as frequently as it used to. I adore the hobby, so switching to shelfers is a great way to still be involved with the hobby, even though it doesnt really appeal to most, and I get that. That said, most of my recent acquisitions have been either Vintage NIBs or built shelfers. So you buy them, you look at them, post a few pictures on forums, and on he shelf they go. I decided I needed a project, but not one that has a deadline or any rush to complete. So that got the cogs turning..... Now my particular choice of R/C poison is Tamiya Touring Cars from 1993- well now really? I think its all down to your generation, but thats my preference. Particularly Japanese Touring Cars, Rally Cars, Touring Cars, and in particular, Porsches. I really like Porsches...... One of the most iconic Tamiya R/Cs, is the Porsche 959. Part number #58059 https://tamiyabase.com/tamiya-models/58059 This is a very very desirable, iconic R/C. That means, as you can imagine, its very expensive and rare. On top of that, it was actually released before I was even born, so the nostalgia isn't there for it. IF my lottery numbers came up, I'd attempt to obtain one of course, but in reality, IVe got no interest sinking £500-1000 into one. IF I had the £500-1000, I'd be tracking down a 30th Anniversary Porsche, not a 959..... There's also the 'rumour' (I personally dont believe it) There will be a '959 ReRe' in some terms for Tamya's 50th Anniversary (the 30th, 40th, and 45th Anniversary specials have been Porsche's.....) the 50th Anniversary is 2026, so who knows...... HOWEVER. I like Porsches. I like 959's. I'm lucky enough to have 'sat in' a real one. Its an amazing car. A technical masterpiece. It would be a lot more reverred today if it wasnt for the Ferrari F40. Anyway. I found out there is a bit of a cheat to get a 959. You can buy a cheap reproduction shell & Decals. You can find some wheels and put it on a MF-01X Chassis.... which is a terrible chassis from Tamiya apparantly...... but being as its probably going to be a shelfer, its not going to matter so...... Lone-wolf
looking forward to the finished car but just to put you right, the MF-01x is not a terrible chassis, i really like mine, it now has the Fiat 131 rally body on it running the long wheelbase
Kpowell911
Started to get the shell etc. Its an L&L Models RePro Shell, with RC Decals UK Decals, and 3D printed wheels:
Kpowell911
So as stated, I intended putting this on an MF-01X. Most people use the Jimny Chassis. Brand new I can get one for £130ish and possibly sell the wheels/chassis/tyres on. However that was a bit wasteful so I tried to get a second hand chassis. I was astonished at how expensive they were. I naively expected to pick up a used roller for £50ish, but I was outbid on a few that were going for £80-100! The biggest issue with using an MF-01X is you need to run the short wheelbase which requires the short driveshaft, which is impossible to get. Hmmmm project on hold….. Kpowell911
Tamiya recently announced/released the all new XM-01 Pro. Truth be told It wasnt something on my radar, but it seemed to get great feedback. I genuinely didnt pay much attention to it other than thinking it looked cool. I thought it was similar to the TT02SRX (which I own and really enjoyed building/owning). Tamiya fans seemed really excited over this new XM-01, and its rare for a completely new Chassis from Tamiya. I kept upto date, but I just thought it was a race 4WD version of Tamiya’s M Cars…… until I saw someone was mounting a Porsche 959 on theirs….. it was then I noticed this was a RALLY CAR! At this point however, it was out of stock and priced at £350ish in the UK in some places…… Edited July 3, 2024 by Kpowell911
Popular Post Kpowell911
Since getting back into Tamiya’s, Ive obviously ended up on various forums and facebook groups. Ive learned so much about the history of Tamiya, and learned about some of their iconic RCs that were either before my time or not aimed at me. Astutes, Avante’s, Top Force’s, Egress’. This has obviously worn of on me, and Ive dipped my toe into this area of Tamiya too. However, as much as I love looking at my NIB Avante Black, and I adored the build of my Egress Black. I have acquired an brand new Top Force Evo and Astute 2022 TD2 with significant hop ups. I also have a runner Brushless BBX. But honestly, these arent really my cup of tea. For use, things like my Maxx or Sledge are far far more capable and useable, and I dont have the connection with Tamiya Off Roaders like I do with the touring cars. So I decided to put the Astute 2022 and Top Force Evo up for sale. The Astute Sold, funds acquired for the 959 Project. Time to so it properly! I was tempted to import one but I didnt see a saving. Luckily the UK RRP seem to have been “corrected” and I found an XM-01 Pro in stock in the UK
