Original 80s Monster Beetle

It’s been a long while since I last posted on here, life and stuff getting in the way, but I have another project to do.

My best mate is turning 50 in September, when we were 13ish in the late 80s he had a Monster Beetle, at school one day he asked me if I could help him as it wasn’t running well. I went round after school and fitted a new motor (the Kyosho Lemans in the pictures) and got it working, that is pretty much how our friendship started.

Over the years he has mentioned that he still had the beetle and would like it to run again, so this week I got his wife to find it in the loft and now I have it to restore.

its missing a few screws an plastic parts but is mostly complete, I’m going to try and save as many of the original parts as I can.

No transmitter either, so have got a new Dumbo Rc set.

Planning on fitting some modern electronics , I have a 10BL60 esc, metal geared servo and either the motor that’s with it (Kyosho LeMan 240sl) or a Tamiya Sport Tuned I have in the spares box, plus a 2s Lipo, will also have all new ball races fitted, as it’s still got the original plastic and brass bushings.

Its all fully stripped down, so just need to wait for a few bits before I rebuild it, planing also on stripping the paint of the shell, as it’s actual in good condition apart from the paint.

Nice little project that mate. You do know though that the 10BL60 is for brushless motors?

Cheers, yes, typo, it’s the quick run 1060 for Brushless.

Whilst waiting for a few parts to arrive, I started trying to strip the old shell of its paint, ended up with some De Solv It graffiti remover, this stuff seems to work well, just a few small patches that need to be scraped off, but mostly got rid of all the old paint.

wanted to try and keep as much of the original as possible, so really wanted to save the shell, will sand down and prime and paint it the original colours again.

Fitted a new servo, this is a GX G25 (25kg) high speed metal geared model, I have used one before in my Lunchbox, so know they work well also fitted a new Kimborough servo saver.

re-fitted the front end and cleaned everything up on the chassis.

Disassembled the shocks and cleaned them up, actually I’m really good condition, re filled with some 32wt oil for now, will see how that works.

Yes, it’s actually ln pretty good condition, so just a few broken parts and a bit of a deep clean.

Rebuilt the gearbox, had to order a parts bag to get some spacers and screws that were missing, in this bag were new metal gears, drive shafts and side plates for the gearbox, I decided not to use the new parts as the originals are still fine, so he now has some spares if it all goes wrong.

fitted a little shim on the diff that is supposed to help with an issue that plagued these cars where the diff clicked and separated under load.

realised I had fitted the servo the wrong way round to, so sorted that and also fitted the steering ball studs underneath, as apparently this eliminates the bump steer these used to suffer from.

Also ordered a few Aluminium parts (motor heating and Wheel hubs) and some Carbon parts for the suspension (yet to arrive), while I want this original, I know he would also like it upgraded/improved to make it more useable and who doesn’t like Carbon!

Soldered the Motor and ESC, going with the original motor, stripped and cleaned, Xt60 battery connector (it’s what I use on most of mine).

Fitted into chassis, may move once Body is done, but looks good for now, all powers up and runs as it should.

Fitted the Carbon parts, not really needed on this, but I know he will appreciate them, they do give more mounting options for the shocks but on this car that’s not making much difference.

Fitted everything else back on and gave it a quick run round the kitchen, runs really well.

Need to tidy up the wiring a bit more, but overall the chassis is done, now on to the shell.

Has it got oil filled shocks on it?

Yes, they are the Yellow CVA Shocks, these were standard with the kit even in the 80’s, actually quite good, used some 32wt TLR oil, seems ok.

He is going to be well chuffed with this me thinks

Hope so, he’s not seen it for years, so it’s going to be a big surprise.

Started prepping the body for paint, a few coats of primer, which shows up quite a few marks/scratches, so will fill and sand to get it all smooth.

Sanded back and smoothed over the whole body, there is some damage to the front, so have cut out some styrene and fixed it underneath, will fill and prime this, hopefully will look ok. Also put a quick first coat of red on some of the other body parts.

Repainted the original driver figure (had to cut this off the shell), kept the same colours as it was, but just tidied it up and added a bit more detail (not easy with my shaky hands😀).

Found a guy on Etsy (3dprintedrcstore)who makes an interior, so painted that up too.

need a few more coats on the main body shell, then it can all go back together
