Cheap eBay SCX10 Pro

We’ve all done it….seen something on eBay that we thought was a bargain, but ended up disappointed once it arrived.  Well, last Thursday I made that impulsive decision when I got an eBay alert saying the SCX10 Pro I’d looked at has had its price slashed by £110!  
I dropped what I doing, clicked the link to see if it was a mistake, but no, it was true.  The seller was originally including a RC4WD ‘Yota’ body in the sale but obviously had no takers, so now he’d removed the ‘Yota’ body from the listing (I’d already built one of those so that was fine by me) and dropped the price dramatically. I hit that BIN button before I had time to talk myself out of it 😂

 

It landed today….and I’m really surprised, it’s actually really good. In fact, I feel like I stole it! 
 

 

It’s in good shape and doesn’t look like it’s had that much action. I could just throw some electrics in it and go play-other than some dual stage foams and a tune (the suspenders are way too hard and high) it would be great as is.  But, I’m already thinking…. ‘project’. I really can’t help myself 😂

Evening ladies and gents..

 

I managed to get this on the bench today-the plan is to try and get it running in time for next weekends EAST event. 
My plan for this has changed and now it’s going to stay pretty much standard. The OG plan was to do a full RPRC Kraken Pro build on it but when I made a parts list I realised there wouldn’t be much Axial left, so the parts I’ve been gathering are going to be used for ground up Kraken Pro build out of upgrade parts…apart from the mostly stock Capra axles it’ll be running on. 
 

So, let’s got into it..

 

The parts haul

 

When I got this it didn’t come with the instruction manual but did come with a small box of bits, including the parts to run a 4 link, AMS set up. I did download a PDF manual from Horizon just in case I couldn’t work out the how to fit the 4 link. 




 

Next up was the servo mount…but the opening wasn’t big enough for the servo to fit through without damaging the servo lead.

So a bit of filing was needed..

Then I realised the steering link was to long but found a shorter link in the parts box..

 

That’s the axle pretty much done-just need to centre the servo and hook up the link once it has power.

 

Next up; motor mount and spur gear.  
The only reason I’m changing these is because the BL motor has plenty of torque (apparently).

I thought fitting the axle would be the easy bit. Errr nope 🤣

This really was quite tricky and I’d obviously messed up something along the way and even had to resort to the manual to find out what it was, but I found the manual not that helpful and quite difficult to understand. But that’s probably just me! 😬

After a bit of link tuning I got it figured out and the front end now works as it should 👍

 

Now on to my least favourite bit of any build….the electrics. 
For me, this part is always a challenge and takes a bit of time to get right. And because the servo is a beast I’ll be running a BEC. Which will need setting up on the laptop. I can already smell the electrical smoke! 🤣

This seems to work…I think, and was just about to break out the soldering iron when ‘she who must be obeyed’ called me for dinner.

 

 

I really need to get this done so I’m gonna try and sneak in the garage tomorrow, if I can get away with it 🤞

Afternoon all..

 

I sneaked into the garage this morning to try and get the electrics finished off, but was very limited on time.  
It didn’t go to bad really and although the layout could probably be improved when I powered it up, no smoke can out! So that’s a win. 
Even though the RX and BEC lite up I couldn’t find the bind plug for my GT5 so didn’t get to run up the motor or servo. 
So the plan this week is to find that bind plug (or see if I can buy another one), get it fully powered up, setup the motor and BEC, set the end points on the steering, swap out the single stage foams for duel stage PL’s and see if it runs okay.  
Hopefully I’ll get all this done by Friday 🤞

if you have a spare servo lead you can make 1 as all it is is a loop of wire conecting the 2 outside connectors together (signal to negative)

I’ve just been online and bought another one…it was then I realised it’s a universal thing and just bridges those two posts in the RX.  
I’ll come across the lost one now I’ve ordered a new one 😂

 I came across a forum post where a guy 3D printed a battery/electronics mount that sat over the transmission. I don’t have a 3D printer but it got me thinking about where the battery would be best placed. The servo mount seemed the perfect spot and as luck would have it, 3 of my lipo’s fit perfectly on it. Result 😎

I got an unexpected early finish from work today, so rushed home to try and get this truck running. 
The new bind plug had arrived so I got the TX/RX bound and the electrics powered up. So far so good. The servo centred but the horn was off centre by one spline, and it wasn’t pulling full lock to the right.  So I had to hook it up to the laptop and adjust the neutral position and now it pulls full lock, both ways. 

Next up was getting the motor set up…which was a breeze. And then it first drive time! Only in the garage but all went well but tomorrow I’m hoping to get it out on some rocks to see how it does.

@steephill Thanks bud. The mad thing is the BEC is still on factory settings because I ordered the wrong Castle link kit (doh!) so had to reorder the right one, which hasn’t arrived yet - can’t find my field link anywhere 🤔
 

I got it out on some rocks today….but I had to buy my other half lunch as payment though 😂

So today I got the truck out on some rocks for a shakedown run, and it did okay. 
It had been raining on and off all day so conditions weren’t ideal as far as grip went, but overall I’m pretty impressed.

So, I think the shocks on the front are too stiff and need lowering some. Also the dual stage foams were moving about in the tyres to much so maybe inserts would be a better option.  Anyway, I think it’s good truck and I’m looking forward to tweaking a few bits to try and get the best out of it.  
It'll also be interesting to put it up against the Interceptor on the same lines for comparison.

That looks a great place to test your rig. 

I had a set of dual foams the moved about. I pulled off one side of the tyre and put a few blobs with the hot glue gun, a bit rough I know. But it worked. 

It's also a good opportunity to get some upgrades though 😉. 

I like to do comparison tests. Definitely worth a trip back for playing with your truck, I mean testing 😉😂. 

Apparently the spring are the same as mini T springs. Last time I looked I couldn't find any for the 10 pro.
