Not much action this week just waiting on parts and playing around with it.

So far I've ordered from AliExpress...

Metal steering assembly

Metal servo horn

Mod 1 pinions

3.17mm to 5mm pinion adapter

Motor mount

Then some guy in the states is making a solid drive shaft that takes a Mod 1 pinion better, the stock is hollow and is very weak.

Hopefully some should arrive next week.

I've finalize the battery holder design and printed that, I'll be using 1mm aluminium sheets to make it a little more rigid. I've also been playing around with a front wing design to try and stop the front from lifting.

Still can't pick what shell to go for, Truggy or buggy?

I was wondering that about mine - had looked up all the LC racing parts to order (from either USA , China or UK depending if anyone had any bleedin' stock) as was going for the truggy to give a little more battery space. Maybe a mini short course truck for yours to hold it all inside? Might be some trucks with a flat wheel arch that match the wheelbase?

It's not for space because the cells are on the outside so I've got plenty of room under the shell.

My Frankenstein Arrma build has taken up most of my model time recently but managed to do a few bits on the baby car..

Had a quick run in the garden today with the 124019 and a hard case 2S lipo installed beneath the new body. The metal top chassis brace has a nice slot to laterally give the lipo a bit more support too. Nice and secure.

Goes well in the garden tbh - not that fast like the Arrma cars and doesn't chew up the grass as much either. Need to get the ramp out next.

Secured the sides of the body to the chassis with a couple of bits of velcro and it kept the worst of the crud out nicely.

With the 3200mah lipo it's not that much heavier than standard so still nice and nippy. Liking the smoothness of the brushed motor with the 40c punch of the bigger lipo.

STD spoiler sprayed to match the slightly deeper now painted Quanum Vandal body;

Quite clean inside still after 20 mins of dog chase:

I'm not a fan of these "upgrade" kits as you don't want meal arms and there's nothing wrong with the stock track rods (maybe change the ends)

Tbh I only ordered it for the steering hub part that I broke last month. Then after ordering I found the plastic bit for sale in the UK and got that in a few days.

So this lot is sitting in the spares box for now.

So I took the WL Desert Buggy (124018) out for the first time today. I have to say it performs really well & better than I expected. It handles quite differently from my 144001, in a good way. It drives straight as an arrow on full throttle from a standstill and you can make sharp turns at high speeds without worry of rolling it or worse watching it cartwheel 50 metres down the road.

It's a great little buggy, and fast too for a brushed model. 35mph on 2s. The only thing I didn't like was how quickly it drained the battery. Only got about 15 minutes from the 2200mah lipo that it comes with. So I decided hey, why not see if I can fit one of my bigger 2s batteries in there.

So I removed both parts of the battery tray, the strap, and also the 2 drivers/nos cannisters part of the bodyshell. Now my 3250mah Voltz fits in there with room to spare and even my new 5200mah Vorjay just squeezes in there as well.

@DAL3D Yes mate they are quite a tight fit! Espeically the 5200mah Vorjay. It's literally within 0.1mm. And yeah, just the roll cage itself is keeping the batteries held down nicely, not that they have any room to move about anyway.

Haha, cheers! I'd seen a few people mount their lipos on their side on smaller models before and well, now I guess i know why!

Looks good mate  :good:

I'll be interested to see how you get on with it as i'm planning to embark upon my own 144001 speedrun project very soon. So I may well be asking you for some advice in the coming weeks.

Hi. Just signed up to look for advice. I bought a 124019 having never really been into rc cars before (I do fly a mavic..) but my kids both got cheap cars for Christmas and I wanted something myself. For 75 quid I was really impressed by the speed and value! Tool it apart, greased diffs/tightened all screws and it was running great.

Haveing bashed it about for a few weeks I decided to upgrade a few bent/broken parts and bought the metal upgrade kit but unfortunately the linkages are all the same size, so need to revert to old ones for the top (for now).  I presume i could cut and thread them but that isnt the point!

One thing I cant find though is the shock mounting screws and spacers. The screws are 20mm and despite buying what I thought was a full screw set it was missing these. Anyone know where I can get them? Few photos just because, including a mates truck..

Hi all, new member here. Ive had my 124019 arrive today, and my sons 144001 is on its way too.

Its been a good 25 -30 years since i was last into RC cars, and im guessing things have changed abit from my build your own tamiya that i had.

I understand that the 129014 will readily take the 2S and 3 S batteries and that this shouod improve the speed quite a bit.

i ordered my car with 3 batterys, and i dont think that theyre Lipo batteries. Could you confirm or suggest if they are Lipo or not.

and if it is aa simple as a straight swap.

I’m hoping to get some lithium grease tomorrow and hope to strip the diff’s down to grease them up a little more than they are from shipped.

Also, how long should i chaegw these batteries for? The charger that was supplied has no lights, or indicators as to whether the battery is charged or not.

Many thanks

@Forbez Hello mate, welcome to the forum  :good:

Those are indeed 2s lipo batteries. I wouldn't recommend running 3s on these as it's likely to burn out the motor and/or the esc too. They're fast enough on 2s anyway, around 30-35mph top speed.

Using the charger that these models are supplied with take a good 3 - 3 1/2 hours to charge these batteries so i'd suggest getting a better charger as soon as you can.

Thanks James, appreciate the reply.

I’ll stick with these if theyre 2s.

Any suggestions for better chargers?

No worries mate  👍

Yeah I just use this: https://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=395660  . I have 2 of them now.

They're basic, but inexpensive, and instead of 3 1/2 hours they take 30 mins to charge a 2200mah lipo

Much appreciated.

Are there any lists of the most replaced parts, as waiting a few weeks for spares from china could become a pain.

I'd be happy to stock on a a few spares of the most common parts, as it should help cover both cars.   Would be good to have a few spares.

Or is there a list of UK stockists?  As I understand its a duplicate of the LC12b1

You're welcome mate.

I'm not sure about a list, but I can tell you from my own experience that the shocks are a tad weak, can easily bend a shock shaft on a hard impact. Also the motor mount, mine has come loose twice now and the motor shifted forward off the pinion.

Apart from that my 144001 & 124018 have both held up really well. They're built well for the price, and they're lightweight, and for me they've actually broken less than models that are 3/4x the cost.
