Thought it about time this section had a 2.2 Performance rig thread, post up yer pics!!!

 

For those of you that haven’t heard of these beasts they break down into 2 main categories;

 

1. 2.2s - Shafty or Sporty - These have 1 motor that is mounted in the chassis then driveshafts to the axles - as per normal trucks but that’s about where the resemblance ends...

2. 2.2M - MOA Motor On Axle - As the name suggests, 2 motors used, 1 on each axle so the chassis is incredibly light and we have control of each axle motor individually via a motor mix lever / switch generally. 
 

All of these will run on 2.2 lightweight wheels generally with a 5.5” / 6” tyre... Lots of tuning goes into these rigs whose purpose are strictly for the more extreme crawling side of things...

XR10 Performance chassis - slightly better than stock.

Brood Apocalypse motors x 2

Sidewinder Micros x 2 - All electronics ‘smashed’

Hitec 7950 ‘The Daddy!’

450mah 3S or 850mah for practice

So yep. I'm building up a killer 2.2 sporty build currently. 

It's based on the ugc chassis I got off stimpy a few weeks ago.  Ar60 axles.  Vanquish hubs. Beef tubes all round. Ud/od gears.  Home made links. Rear lower are steel for strength. Uppers are carbon rod. Super light and strong.  Front lower are alu and uppers are carbon again.  100mm boom racing shocks with losi mini t yellow rear springs inside them.  Nice soft springs.  Sits about a 3rd in to travel on them. Ci wheels with rovers.  Super light wheels. Currently running a Scx10 gearbox and a 2t 5 pole motor.  Behind axle steering. So nothing to catch on the rocks. 1080 esc for now. And a 450 or 800mah battery.  

It's still a work in progress.  Lots more. It's to order for it.

I am also still in the process of building my own custom chassis and links for 2.2 sporty Crawlers.  Carbon fiber chassis and links. Needs a lot more work to grt it right. Then make a nicer looking chassis as a final prototype. And then see about making a few sets up. 

Carbon links are 4mm carbon rod and glued in to custom rod ends.  Can be made to any length needed.

Got my dlux parts finally. Front link mount with servo mount. And rear link mounts.  All fitted now.  Lovely parts.  It's getting so close to being done now.   Need one spoool. And then a few small bits doing. And make some bent front upper links. Modded my front hub weights to fit behind the hub. Simple job. But looks good with the ssd hubs.

Could easily turn this into a build thread given the amount of photos i've found of this thing from last summer!

But for now, i'll just post up some posers in awesome Dartmoor landscapes:)

 

I built this after overdosing on an OG SCX10, RC4WD TF2, Bomber and constant running repairs of a Wraith.

In my mind I'd done the scale, trail and basher so that left a comp crawler, something I could take where nothing else could climb up on the Tors, and there's an abundance of lines I could never quite clear.

So, I scoured RCC (as you do) and looked up some awesome looking chassis. Nearly got a Dravtec SuDo Pro, then tempted with a 5th Dimension and finally the dlux. But, because i'm a ditherer and OCD I kept looking and stumbled upon a long thread back in the day on RCC titled "Bender Customs SW3 Chassis" - there was something about this that really caught my eye, even though the geometry probably isn't up to 5th dimension quality.

So, where on earth am I going to get a SW3 chassis from 12 years on!!! The bay of course!!! and not only are there excellent knock-off's of the SW3, they were also stupid cheap; £13.99 incl. postage!!!and that included the skid... The rest was history, over 2 months I collected parts and fab'd up some stuff and end result is here. The climbing is nuts; not up to moa nuts mind, but for me it's outstanding and as it's fully custom I do get a kick out of my creation.

These 2^^ are actually in a little known spot called Cudleigh Rock where I live and is a great testing ground for tweaks as it's a 5 minute walk from my front door.

My sons Wraith. Quite possibly the most resilient rig we've ever had.

Was waiting on the second shipment off SSD bronze for the rears so the Hyrax and other SSD had to be robbed from another rig!

Who doesn't like tyre ****!

Oh, and yeah, same boat as you, nearly got the Sudu - especially as the chap is a dude and in Europe but he's closed down that 1/10th section now sadly... (But hopefully my new sporty chassis will turn up next week!! Soooo excited...)

Here we go!

 

First mock-up before I built the links.

Links done! Used 6mm solid stainless steel and got father in law to lathe me some threads.

Pulling things together so I could talk to MIP about a custom shaft... Not easy that one but fortunately they communicate quite well.

Went for Hot Racing SOA mount but it took some persuading which I'm  not ecstatic about. Would've gone for the UC Fab version but they had no stock:(

Those gold things are drone stand offs - perfect length for what I needed; battery tray one side (3s 2200) and motor cover other side. Imagine a world without zip ties!

Looking crammed and untidy with a very dodgy servo, and horn, not to mention the Ripmax's!

Footnote - have gone through 3 different spring types to get this where I want it and the RC4WD approach to springs in these shocks is a real eye opener in how simple it can all be!

Now it makes sense.... You widened it! I’m sure you are aware most try to run the batt on the front axle - makes the COG lower...

I see you have a 2290!! How you finding that? Contemplating one... Have been experimenting with 12v servos to save the BEC weight and extra wiring.... The first JX46kg hobbies I got here is poop mind so trying to send back and see what’s what... 🙈

The servo is ace, beats my Promodeler which is top notch as well.
Thought about the battery on servo but so far the weight is fine for me [emoji106]

The chap who makes them has been inundated through Covid and separated from his family... Spoke to him last week and all is ready but he’d forgot to make me one of the links!... Was seeing his kids for the first time last weekend - I told him to turn his phone off and go have fun!!!!

 

That said, I’ll be bugging him again tamara!! Haha
