MCD racing 5th generation

so, all nearly done, still amazed how much engineering is put in this car but I found one potential issue (so far), not sure if I won Friday night shift lottery or if there's any other reason but rear diff pinion has about 2mm play (in/out) so the gap in mesh is too big, tomorrow going to strip down the front diff as well and find out what it cause coz front one is perfectly tight, there are 2 pinions available, one for 39T spur and one for 37T spur, both are 13T so the difference is in length, may be they just accidentally used the wrong one but will confirm tomorrow, secondly the rear diff bearings and output caps have too much play, about 2mm on each side, shouldn't be an issue as it sits tight in the diff case but I don't like the idea of keeping it this way so once the pinion is fixed I'll also play with shimming the bearings and output caps, that's it for now, productive day I would say 👍

No big deal, every car I had in my hands had something to sort out so I would be surprised if this one is perfect out of box,  no matter the brand it’s built be people so mistakes can occur, hopefully this is easy fix, will report back later afternoon

re-measured and adjusted as per below

btw. forgot to mentioned, XR5 max pro has stiffer springs M322302S as default which are too stiff for my liking so I'm gonna order original M322301S

so, took the caliper out and just in case measured previously mentioned pinion play of 2mm before I start further stripping of the diffs and must admit I was wrong, it's just 1mm and that's when it's touching the diff case so about 0.5mm free spin which is exactly what I would expect and in such case have to apologise to MCD engineers ☺️ , luv ya all for long time 😂

anyways, took it all out and at least replaced all bearings just to find out I ran out of grease so can't put it all back before new parts delivery which is usually a week 😜

started working on rebuild, steering assembly fits perfectly, center diff mount with rotated top plate as well but coz spur is rotated 180c servo/radio tray doesn't, either I have to cut that red square part out or put it all into original shape and sort out where to squeeze batteries (pretty much no go) , secondly need new motor mount again!!! coz this one is too big and touching diff top plate 🤦‍♂️

tried my best but I can't find the way how to keep the spur on the rear side of the mount ☹️, too much effort and adjustments required just to keep battery straight, and even if I would make it I won't be able to adjust mesh, would be limited with battery length, bye bye brake servo and changing motor pinion would be pita so decided to keep spur where it should be and just adjust motor mount with new mounting holes, once done will start working on battery tray for front and back...

wasn't happy with topspeedrc diff mount so decided to order original MCD, bearing too tight on one side and too loose on the other, prove of MCD precision which is absolutely perfect, besides top range alloy

I always thought Top Speed RC were a cheap and nasty brand like Integy, your findings just prove it 😂

I do like sticking to the original manufacturers hops ups were possible, you know then they are of original design and not a rip off 👍

It’s not that catastrophic, I could most probably live with it if it’s not going to be driven by 15kw motor at 30k rpm, couple of microns which could be polished off but this one has to be holding perfectly tight so better properly now than sorry later 😂

steering assembly is well made as is top chassis brace so just partial complain 😀

btw. It had the top speed rc badge on the bag it came with but I couldn’t found any of the MCD parts on their web side so no idea who’s producer

some progress, rounded solid bar output caps originally from f/r diffs aren't usable, for some reason I didn't realised that f/r dog bones have bigger end balls than center dog bones so these diff caps have bigger holes means too much play in it (shown below)🤦‍♂️

IMG_2142.thumb.JPG.8a1d5fde1ba391f44734859917593dd7.JPG

so back to originals, fortunately I bought different sizes of rubber boots so smaller size fits perfectly and even if these are triangle shape (due to brake discs) these boots covering it nicely, so now we have dog bones fully covered from one end to the other and I don't have to think about cleaning and re-greasing after each dirty run, in case I find the need to install mechanical brakes (maybe in the future) I did preinstalled the brake pads and bottom holders

so drive train fully assembled and ready

next started to work on servo tray, first had to cut small part (red arrow) to prevent rubber boot from touching it so now there's enough space, red lines showing what needs to be additionally cut off, hopefully all will be done within tomorrow, that's it for now...

  • 5 weeks later...

servo tray fixed, servo saver as well, had to strip it down even more to be able to drill new holes for battery trays, also got back stub axles from tool shop and had some time to measure the weight of the chassis

after machining

so aprox 1kg without those parts, not bad for 1:4 scale

still waiting for a lot of parts, rear motor holder, new smaller pinion, new battery trays (old went to trash) , stub axle washers, batteries and I don't know what else so not earlier than end of May 😭

thanks...it is, unfortunately coz I decided to customize a lot of it to my liking it needs a lot of DIY work, which is fine if it goes well, but sometimes like in my case not so well 😂

standard/original - https://www.rcfox.de/M200102X-MCD-Racing-F/R-Planet-Diff-Assy-Competition

LSD - https://www.rcfox.de/M200101X-MCD-Racing-F/R-LSD-Diff-Assy-90-120-deg-Lock including bearings and output caps as seen on picture above, I paid 20 less as I bought it with voucher we got previously 👍
