Thanks mate 👍. I was testing it out and had to stop for a picture.

Just picked up a trx4 defender. I plan to run it on a 8.4v nimh for now as I already have one. But what battery and charger would be best? Is there much improvement from an 2s/3s lipo over nimh? Are adapters available to run 3rd party batteries?

you should be able to get adapters for it or you could make 1

I can’t seem to find the ‘ID ‘ style plugs anywhere. Just some square ones which are the older connectors aren’t they?

here’s an adaptor I found going from the new ID plug to the old type. Be nice go from the ID to a deans as I have loads of batteries I could use

Yes but they all look rectangular as apposed to the almost diamond shape ID ones?

edit:

this is the closest I can find but I’d need it the other way around. ID female to deans male

Lipo will be give it more go juice bit faster of course but it feels more responsive on 3s used 2s before but I didn't like the feel but that's just me , I like to drop to the lowest pinion and use 3s so it has the extra torque and power to bump over obstacles.  2s is perfect for trailing and that 2nd gear gives it a nice boost when messing about 😃.

I use these as they fit spot on in the front battery tray if yours has one, get about 2hr+ run time :

Gens ace Soaring 2700mAh 11.1V 30C 3S1P LiPo Battery Pack with XT60 Plug - Gens Ace

Battery charger got this off Banggood :

mine doesn’t seem to have the front battery tray. Is that something on the clipless models? I’ve got a defender. I prefer the look of the sport but wanted full spec. I’ve now learnt the shell isn’t a simple swap as the wheelbase, fenders and shell mounting is all different! So looks like I’ll be sticking with the defender shell for now.

Ive just spent good money on the Hota F6+ charger so I don’t really want to go and buy a Traxxas charger as I’ll inevitably want the top dog one. Am I best off just changing the plug on the XL5? Am I likely to need a warranty claim on it?

I cut the traxxas plug off. The xl5 is ok for trail driving, crap for crawling if I'm honest.

If you prefer the look of the sport you can get some 313mm links, they're cheap from injora. And a sport body. It will be a lot more capable than the top heavy defender body. You could also then change to the inner arches with the front battery tray.

Yes the front tray was part of the clipless set up when I got my new bronco but you can buy it I believe, But for general TRX4 trailing fun the centre battery tray is fine.

You can use adaptors like you are thinking for the lipos and use the sexy HOTA charger you got 😁 , I have been using them for ages in my crawlers with no problems. As Steephill says the XL5 is ok but when you get around to swapping over for example a hobbywing 1080 g2 you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner 🙂.  The whine of the XL5 drove me crazy till I got a 1080 and could play with all the fancy settings 😃.

I shouldn’t have really spent the money on the car in the first place. Less than 24hrs in and I'm already considering dropping more £££ on shells and electronics! I think I need counselling!

Is there much of a market for an (almost) new defender shell?

Drive the thing then see what you want to do with it you might love it out the box 😃. A box fresh TRX4 does not need anything spending on it in my opinion for trailing and light crawling its a beast!. The thing with this hobby once you get into and reading up on upgrades it gets addictive 😁.

Anyone fitted one of these?

Just wondering what wheel arches I would need as it says it doesn’t work with the defender style ones?

So I went and got a 1080 esc. Figured it was cheaper than buying some Traxxas batteries and actually might cost next to nothing if I can sell the xl5. Where’s everyone putting them though? The wire doesn’t reach the receiver with the 1080 sitting where the old esc was? Also, what are the extra plugs with one wire each?

@TommyC One of the wires, think it's the yellow one, is for adjusting the drag brake on a spare channel. I use a rotary switch.

The other is for real car mode. I don't bother with that, it's weird.

You use a spare channel for a switch for reverse, so you still pull the throttle the same.

You can mount the esc in the same position as stock, run the wire under the battery tray, you may need an extension depending on what receiver you are using.

The last one I fitted to a trx4 didn't need one but I used a different receiver and flipped the position so it reached.

So there’s no optional esc tray or anything like that available? No common way of repositioning? I’ve made an extension up for now. Pulled the yellow pin and put it in the plug with the white for now and put shrink wrap over the join. Can’t help but think I’ve compromised the waterproofing of it now though.

Well this thing is such a different animal on 3S. Need to fiddle with the settings on the ESC as it pulls stoppies on the drag brake!

does anyone have one running on a dumborc ddf350? What channels did you use for the diff locks? I’ve put them on 3&4 for now but wondered if there was anyway of getting them working on sw7 toggle switch like they did on the tqi? Or am I better off have fully independent control anyway?

Stuck the ESC on top of one these works a treat and no extra cables needed.

Have a look here for arches and the pickup Raptor shell on my TRX-4 👍
