FTX Vantage/Carnage owners Thread

Having read through some older posts, I now realise I’ve done pretty much all I can to destroy the diff gears:

more powerful motor

Bullet proof spur/pinion

3s lipo

larger heavier wheels

end result, the soft diffs are crumbling. I’m gonna shelve the 3s for a while and stick to the 2s to see if this helps. I hadn’t really considered the breaking is as much to blame as the acceleration. I’m feeling a bit deflated here, as the car is fantastic when it’s working, but it’s failing in the same place now. Just need a few more hardened parts that don’t appear to exist. The most annoying thing is, it’s one of the hardest/most time consuming /messiest parts to replace and it’s not cheap either; £17 for a pair of the diff gears and spurs.

just ordered the hobbywing lcd program box. Going to reduce the punch and brake force. This will at least lower the strains on the drivetrain a little 🤞🏻🙏🏻

Hi m8 I can do 2 pairs of diffs for £30 plus postage . If you look back a few pages you see the photos . Cheers

Thanks buddy. Already ordered the parts needed (diff gear and spur) for £17. Both are pairs, so I also have spares now.... ready for after the next run 🤦‍♂️

So after the old body finnaly snaped in half, it's time for a new one... Prepared for some scratches 😁

Nice. Do you use shoo glue? It’s so expensive!

i use this stuff, it works great for me...

I think that Shoe goe is widely used for that, just because someone used it a long time ago, as it was the only thing he had at hand...

For me a shoe goe is more of a myth than a usefull thing, as there are now many specialised glues for different uses...

Decent, that’s a much cheaper option! Do you mind me asking why you chose to use a carnage lid? I assume it’s because you like it (which is a good enough reason), but there are so many to choose from.

Well to be honest, i was too lazy to search for the body that would fit. I would love to have something more durable, but i had to order something that would fit for sure...

The look has nothing to do with it, would be happy with anything. Ok, maybe not the Tesla cybertruck 😂

What greases do people use on their diffs? I've got some basic grease in the garage but it's really thick and I don't want to clog up the gears too much?

I'm also under the impression that silicone/high temp grease is best for the conditions that the RC car is going under. I don't think the stuff in my garage is silicone based

Page 271 (end of) into 272 is discussed recently. I just used Lucas Oil 10574 Red and Tacky grease 454g - it was cheap off Amazon and did the trick.

Hi, just blew up a front shock on my vantage, think I’d already bent the shaft on it, are the aluminium shocks worth it or should I just replace with plastic, also what oil is recommended for the front of these?

I was told by Modelsport that there is no notable performance improvement with the FTX alloy shocks. Just a bit of bling!

I replaced the oil in my stock shocks with 50wt and it made the world of difference to the handling of the car.

Not so great on really rough ground at speed (wheels off the ground a little more) but generally a big improvement that copes better with the higher speeds and quicker acceleration from the upgraded motor and esc.

Is 50wt a thicker oil then stock ? And is it worth doing all 4 shocks or just doing what I need to do

Stock is 30wt I believe. I did all 4, but this was on my carnage, not a vantage.

So today was good and bad. Sun was out and the park was empty. Was great fun bashing around and getting some decent air until... another diff gear shredded. That’s 2 times in 3 runs on 3s. Miraculously the rest of the car is intact, it’s really quite robust now. I have a carbon chassis and top plate on order but not sure when that’s going to arrive, it’s already been weeks. I’m hoping this will ease some of the movement stresses on the gears as the stock chassis flexes all over the place.

does anyone know of a way to cure this? I know that @Jens has recently fitted a hardened diff gear, but haven’t heard if this has made a difference? The spur will be the next problem. Probably too early to tell. There are lots of people suffering with this issue, and a gap in the market. Who do I go to to get some super tough gears made for me (and the rest of the extended FTX family).
It’s like the car wasn’t designed to go this fast and/or take such abuse 😭😖😅

I broke another diff this weekend.

Then I remembered something on the ebay page for the hardened steel spur/pinion:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FTX-Carnage-Bugsta-32DP-Hard-Steel-Spur-kit/264098799917?mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&siteid=3&customid=link&campid=5338629070&toolid=20001&mkevt=1

Use an alloy or carbon top plate to prevent flexing of the bottom plate.

It prevents damage to the diffs and keeps the mesh aligned.

Just ordered the carbon top plate since I couldn't find the cheaper alloy version.

i have the carbon fibre top plate and still have problems with diffs.

The rear diff could be affected by the chassis flex because of the relatively long shaft which is bearinged on the chassis on one side, thus resulting in diff pinion not having the constant mesh to the diff spur.

But front diff? Not really, at least not that much that it would put the stress to the gears...

I put a lot of attention into assembling them and still have problems... I check the runout of every diff with the dial (not allowing more than 0,05mm), carefully check the mesh and shim it properly, use quality grease... and still after about 10 battery packs i need to change them.

I think the problem is in material, for the stock setup it's ok, but as soon as you put some more power in there, they are the weakest part of the car.

I was playing with the idea of manufacturing a small batch of those from proper material, but i think the costs would be just to high...

Would it be too high if everyone on here wanted a couple? I’d want 4 alone! Who can fabricate these things?

Theres eclips on the diff pinions i assume they are missing pushing or pulling the diff pinion in and out and all about, also are your diffs shimmed right?
If they keep failing there is somthing wrong with how its setup / installed imo, i blast 4s through the ftx diffs not a problem.

Maybe we all pushed our Carnages to its physical limits?

The only next step would to upgrade to a different, more expensive model.

I don't know. Just got that feeling coming in......

So far the "claimed" hardened steel diff gears on my Carnage with the Max10 ESC are holding.

But who knows how long.

The Bugsta ones lost their teeth last weekend, but that car is running with the stock brushless motor and only 2S Lipos.

For me, I am starting to save up my money for a Traxxas e-Revo 2.0.

My son is behaving so well, that I fear I really have to spend £600++ by the end of the summer term.

I’ve followed the manual and installed as per instruction to the best of my knowledge. I am no expert, so could be my fault, but this has happened too many times now, and not just to me, and always the same issue. I will try to look for any possible adjustments/improvements next time, as I’m bored of doing this repair.

Well..... if the prospect of getting an e-Revo changes a child's attitude permanently to very positive, it's surely worth it.

It's £600 vs a good character for a lifetime. Sounds for me like a good deal.
