what would be a good first r/c car for my little brother, he is 8 and has had some experience, not much ;) !! he asked me to have a look and I came up with a few examples, such as ansmann mad rat, tamiya grasshopper, hornet, rising fighter. bearing in mind he is 8 and wants a cheap kit, which is easy to drive and durable!!! any suggestions would be gratefully recieved!! :) thanks

Cool so you need a steering servo and a motor+esc (bushed i assume on a budget?) the Macnum might be the better one if he wants a kit and cheap but the motor included is total crap.

Still id advise on a firestorm even a 2nd hand one. The kit side of it is fun but theres not much to them and it will be built and just a few hours.

The tamiya stuff is generally either cheap and falling apart or very expensive shelf queens, they are not really any good for 'bashing' either.

The mad rat is a good little car and the kit is only

i have just learnt the hard way on this subject, believe them they are right, i bought a cheap rc car because i liked it and ignored advice and its spent most of its life being repaired and costing lots of money, however after getting fed up repairing i took advice and i too bought a firestorm, and it is brilliant fast and very tough, it is over your budget and kit cars are not a cheap hobby the one i bought which is useless cost nearly 4x your budget and it was still rubbish, for an 8 year old i would probably go for something pre- built like tyco r/c they are slow but tough as old nails i had loads when i was younger and they lasted years of abuse at a time. just my 5 pence

I too ignored advive and went for the cheaper option, I soon learned. I then got the firestorm and am loving it. My lad is Three and i got him a tyco rebound of ebay for a tenner, then a couple of new batteries shipped over from america for about $20, Ihave been really surprised at how quick he has picked up the control for this fairly quick tank-like vehicle, And down at the skate park it is a whole load o fun. the only thing is now my daughter has been sitting on it and broken a few of the rims which obviously i am not gonna be able to get hold of.

So i am thinking that i should maybe get him a 1/18th or possibly a 1/16th size vehicle then possibly gear it down or change the motor till he gets used to it.

Would this not be a viable option for your brother?
