Nitroholic
First off, what do you get in your package? The kit comes with everything you need to get fitted and started, and instructions for fitting and use. You get a velocity stack, which bolts on to the back of your carb, along with a new gasket to make sure you have a good seal. The filter fits over the stack and is held on with the supplied jubilee clip. Also included is a pot of air filter oil sufficient to get your filter well oiled The pot is enough to do your filter with a good dose of oil, plus some for a bit of a top up...but you would want to make sure you have a larger supply if you are running in the dust, as you will want to clean and re-oil it periodically. Had a small issue with the original filter suffering damage in transit, but this was quickly sorted by Uber RC and a replacement arrived the next day. Can't argue with the service. It is worth reading the instructions in the kit as well, as it highlights an area where care is needed when handling the filter. The rubber that links the sponge element to the velocity stack is quite soft, and if mistreated can tear. Fit it in accordance with the instructions and do not over-tighten the clip. Also..if you are squishing the filter to spread the oil around it, squash it like a concertina and don't distort the rubber..just the sponge. That covered, it was time to fit the filter and see how it looks. This is what I had to start with. Small, restricted and grotty looking. Undoing the screws (you need to re-use to attach the velocity stack) the original filter and gasket is removed. Into the parts bin they go. On goes hte velocity stack and fresh gasket. The stack is nicely machined and fits snugly onto the carb. The screws fit into machined recesses, and it all looks very tidy. The filter and jubilee clip are then carefully placed over the stack and the clip tightened down. Make sure the clip runs no more than 10mm through the screw when you tighten it and it will fit tight and snug without distorting at all. Don't forget to oil the filter as per the instructions before fitting it! It goes on snugly and fitted very well into the space I had left. The thing is almost identical in overall size to a stock Baja filter, so there are no problems with fit or clearance for throttle linkages etc. It just goes straight on with no bother for me. So...with that done, how does the car run? At first .. badly. The airfilter is clearly letting a lot more air in and the car is difficult to start and runs generally badly right through the rev range. This is not unexpected, and I have the tuning screwdriver ready to go. A few tweaks to richen up the mixture, and things start to go better. Pick up is good, and the car is trying to lift the front end on the first 'clean' runs as the tuning starts to get right. Definitely doing what it should do. Testing didn't run as well or long as I had planned, as a roll deranged the end of the exhaust messing up the tuning badly. A few brief goes at compensating ended up with a buggy that wouldn't idle, and was a bit off in the midrange....but this will be sorted once I fix the pipe and get it really tuned properly. After the run, I took the filter off to have a look inside. The outside was quite dusty from a donut session on a gravel track, but there was no sign of dirt or dust on the inside. Since that's the main thing you want from a filter..it clearly does what it should So...what do I think of the product? Finish on the parts is good, and it fits well and looks good on there. Some care is needed when handling, but as long as you pay attention to the instructions, there is no reason to worry. Airflow is good, and the fact that I needed to richen up the mixture confirms it was far better than the stock filter. Once tuned, the carburation was good and the car was torquier and running better than before. Would have run it longer if I hadn't damaged by exhaust! Overall, it's a good option for those who want a decent filter, and seems pretty much on a par with the stock Baja one in terms of fit and performance. It looks nice, and does the job well. Time will tell as to durability and long term filter performance, but from my shorter runs, it did a good job all round. Worth a try

Mr Terminator
I'm gonna need a new filter soon,my Redneck is looking a little tired after 2 years use but one of those will only be about a tenner and that equals 3 stage filtration, what benefits would there be in me getting an Uber filter, granted it looks superb as do all Uber products but not very pratical if you already have a HPI/TGN combo,in my opinion that combo is the best filtration you can get on a largescale engine...?? adolf hamster
agreed, theres no doubtign the flow but whats it like at stopping the dirt? the stuff i got round here is so fine and dry i'm thinking getting a threshold dune lol
cerbrus2
I take it you cant use that filter on a 603 carb. due to not coming with the spacer gasket in order to allow the choke to be turned off. It looks ok But ill stick with my "real" K & N.
>M<
Would this air cover filter cover it? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GPM-AIR-FILTER-COVER-BJAFCO-fits-HPI-BAJA-5B-SS-/200466951194?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item2eacc2ec1a or is there anything cheaper? maybe from uberrc? adolf hamster
hey guys, ive also just got one of these and i want to add a few notes if thats ok: firstly the v stack is a very good fit all round, i checked it and its perfectly with the end of the 813's bore should be good flow there. secondly, if youve just bought one of these filters and you think it looks a bit 'thin' [i'm not saying uber would supply a product that hasnt been testes but there are those of us out there with terminal paranoia] you can still fit a normal hpi white inner filter inside the uber one, meaning 3 stages of filtration and imo would make it far superior to the hpi setup. thirdly: i had a little test 'suck' on the uber and hpi filters and the difference in resistance is noticable, the hpi offered some resistance wheras the uber i could breathe normally *collapses from petrol fumes*

Feedtheinferno
Great write up nitro, I've just bought one of these to go with my cy f270 engine, I bought the whole kit with oil & a velocity stack, whatever that is! Lol. The velocity stack is required as the standard filter is held in with the two adjoining plastic ring clips. The metal stack sits between the carb and the filter as a surface/mount for the more generic jubilee clip style filter to clamp on to. Without the stack you wouldn't be able to filter so it's just as well you bought the kit
