jpbp200 Posted March 22, 2015 Share Posted March 22, 2015 Hi My Revo with a MM ESC doesn't brake when in reverse. To clarify when going forwards if I apply reverse throttle and keep it there the car comes to a stop. I then release the throttle and go either backwards or forwards from there. Nothing unusual in that. However if I am reversing and apply forward throttle the motor simply switches to going forwards without doing any braking. I'm not going fast backwards but it can't be good for the gears. I have looked all through the programming instructions and I cannot see a way of programming this behaviour. I can modify the amount of braking applied as a percentage of motor power and numerous other things but not that. Is that normal? I am sure my Slash used to brake in reverse as well as in forward. Tug Posted March 22, 2015 Share Posted March 22, 2015 All Castle ESCs have reverse braking, they're expensive for a reason. Not being funny, but is it definitely Castle? It has 9 settings Brake Reverse Type Brake Amount % Reverse Power % Punch Control Drag Brake Throttle Dead Band Voltage Cut Off Motor Timing Motor Type None of the options on any of the above are related to braking while going backwards however so I guess it's a no. Settings for option 1 are: With Reverse (Default) - allows reverse after ESC senses 2 secs of neutral throttle Without Reverse - For racing. Self explanatory!! Crawler Reverse - Reverse or forward is accessible at any time after the ESC brakes to zero motor RPM (even if the vehicle is moving). Although as I type this it seems odd that in Crawler Reverse mode it mentions forward and reverse being accessible. Maybe that is it??? Just to clarify Tug - It does brake when I am going forwards. I just apply reverse throttle. It doesn't do the opposite when going backwards thogh ie if I apply forward throttle it just runs forward straight away without any braking. Option 1 setting 3 (Crawler Reverse) does look like the most likely candidate. I'll try it tomorrow..... MGM has it and probably a few others that I haven't tried.Right, I have tried the Slash and it definitely does have forward and reverse braking. I recalibrated the ESC on the Revo and changed the Reverse to Crawler mode. This just disables all braking. I changed it back to the default setting so that it brakes from forwards again and it has not altered anything ( I wondered if changing the option and then changing it back might reset it ). I telephoned Logic and they said that Castle ESCs are more for racing and therefore don't have that function and that correct adjustment of the slipper clutch will prevent any diff damage.I haven't spoken to anyone at Castle themselves as they are in the States obviously but I have sent them an email.Tug - If you are 100% sure would you mind sharing your source? I want mine replaced obviously if it is faulty but so far I have been told it's normal behaviour so I would be grateful for any evidence to the contrary! Tug Posted March 23, 2015 Share Posted March 23, 2015 I've a Mamba max, an XL2 and a couple of Mamba Monster Max ESCs, all have reverse braking, that's all the evidence I can give. I know they've gone cheaper on the Mamba Monster 2, the fan isn't thermostatically controlled anymore, maybe they've cut corners on the drive profiles too? Thunderwolf Posted March 23, 2015 Share Posted March 23, 2015 iirc this profile is rare. i knwo the VXL system and very few others do it (VXL from my slash 4x4 did) in regards to castle esc doing it i believe the older units never came with this function, i can't remember which ones did but i think its something few people liked and it been removed of some of the newer stuff. The Revo drives backwards almost as well as it goes forwards! It must be a Mater fan (you'll know what that reference means if you've seen Cars!!). The guy there says and I quote "None of our car speed controllers have or have ever had the braking feature when going from reverse to forward. I am sorry that you have been told otherwise. I can guarantee you that that is not a feature that has ever been offered on any of our car ESC's". I don't have any lying around to test unfortunately as I only have the one that's in my car. I do find it odd that it is not mentioned as a feature in any specs I have seen for any manufacturer of ESC but the Traxxas VXL 3s definitely does this which is why I noticed it missing in the Castle. It's one of the features I've always loved about them. I had a Turnigy Trackstar that used to brake to a complete stop, then start reversing without having to go to neutral first. The guy at Castle wasn't the most helpful person I've ever dealt with so I am not 100% convinced he knows what he's talking about. His reply to my first email asking if the feature should be there was "Contact Traxxas". I pressed him a bit more and just got one word replies up until the last reply I got which I posted earlier.
