OHO's Land Rover Defender 90 pick up.

Recommended Posts

Well, I picked up this bargain bodyshell as I've always had plans of doing a D90 pick up... Figured it was better to butcher one that was already a bit used than a brand new one.

At the moment I have no chassis, which doesn't bother me at all, it wonn't be an overnight rush job, because I'm replicating an actual vehicle, it's my friends D90 pick up, he also has a big metal back box on his, which I'm not sure if I'll make or not yet.

So this thread might be a little bit premature seeing as I have no chassis or whatever yet, but what the hell

I've not even decided on which chassis to go with yet, but I'll figure all that out later, for the moment the main focus is just the shell itself.

Also while messing around in the spare room I stumbled upon a nice little trip down memory lane of my SCX10 D90 build :)

This is the shell as I bought it.

And Mark was pretty sure I wouldn't get the windows out without breaking them, but plenty of time spent carefully scratching away glue and well, I think I did a reasonable job.

I'll be grabbing loads of photos of his D90 soon, then start chopping and whatnot.

That's all for now.

Won't the g6 fit it.

The wheelbase will be too long. Converting a scx10 gets expensive and isn't as easy as you think, I'm only halfway through mine and already past the cost of a new gelande 2 :whistling:

Nahh, not crashed, they just put a complete back on it, because it's got the top box bit, they decided to go for a fully enclosed rear, but it's all removable, so it's still a pick up, but with a full gate instead of a drop tail and a lid lol.

And yeah they can be a bit fiddly, the interior needs the most work in my opinion, which is why I chose to go for frosted windows and no interior in my last one lol, it bugged the hell out of me!

And by option 2, you mean what? :P

Opinions and input would be appreciated.

That you might be like me, set out to do plan A and end up doing plan B so why not start with plan B lol :xd:.

Personally I would rather build it to how I would 'want' one to look rather than replicate something but that's just me :tease:  I'm interested to see how you're going to convert it though. I see RC4WD used to sell a pick up and van version (although expensive) so maybe they will help you if you can find pictures?

No, I mean when you said option B, did you mean perfectly replicate the entire thing at the cost of the handling, or just make it the same colour with the same dents and reg and stuff...

I'm leaning more towards the latter, for several good reasons.

Styrene is too weak IMO for a structure such as that.

Steel would be too heavy and it'd just fall over all the time.

Alloy would be too expensive and most probably bend a bit.

RC4WD released a very very inaccurate pick up, the back windows were nothing like the real thing

I'm pretty sure I can make the rear bit of the cab and the floor and benches and whatnot.

Also unsure if to have a working tailgate or a fixed one as well :/

If all else fails, it'll be the easy but strongest route, fixed tailgate, van backed (instead of windows all together) and just in the same colour and reg as his.

Chassis is ordered anyway, shall update the thread title when it arrives.

Some progress...

Oh and while sat thinking about what route to go, I decided to at least get some more of the body ready, so I started removing every bit of it.

Again, something Mark said I may struggle with :P it all came out like a charm :D

Just goes to show that even modern glues aren't all they are cracked up to be  :whistling:

Option B is as above :tease:

That cut doesn't look so bad

There's a 3d printed rear section for these pickups knocking about the net if you wanted it to look right , ask Pete or dready on scalerc the plastic weld they use its about

Aye I know but they're expensive, I'm currently in talks with someone about making some much cheaper for the UK guys.

And I can build styrene stuff so it's not too bad, the stuff I use is good, but on a large open thing like what his back bit is, unless I put some decent supports in, which would look un-realistic, I don't think it would withstand a roll over to be honest.

I'm weighing up my options at the moment, I'm going to run into quite a few issues trying to build it like my friends, so I may just do my own version afterall.

We'll see how it goes, currently working on the TF2 so the D90 is on the back burner slightly :P
