New Toy - FTX Sidewinder with pics

Recommended Posts

Some of you will already know that I recently picked up a brushless FTX Sidewinder. After some initial issues (down to bad driving on the road) I finally got to give a good thrashing :) Unfortunately I was on my own so I don't have any action shots but I can say that it took everything I threw at it, including several nose dives, and survived to ride another day. I broke some plastic parts but nothing that affects overall performance.

I'm really pleased with it so far, the only thing that's really let me down is the steering servo which has now been upgraded. More pics and action shots to come soon.

I'll boil parts as I replace them, I can't be bothered to strip it down tbh. To be fair, I don't think boiling them would have helped in this situation, I was learning to jump for the first time and it took some pretty hard hits.

Good pics, I ain't had time to give mine a decent thrashing but only a few runs on my old school grounds and the car park, it took a few bashes and only the roll cage on the rear broke where the screw holds it in place nothing major (a few cable ties hold it in place till replacement is purchased). I ain't got a decent cam yet to get any decent vids or pics of mine, only the ball and chains phone and she is either in work or on bingo so trying to get it off her is a bit challenging lol. So as soon as I can get hold of it will get some of mine although it now feels a bit slow so saving the pennies to get a brushless combo and a Syma X5C-1 and a decent action cam and a helicopter a blade nano cpx and another buggy nitro/petrol I think this time, got my eye on a yamma buggy. Time to sell a few of the kids me thinks offers being taken lol.

Thanks, I got some bigger jumps in but thats the best I could do one-handed. I had to cut yesterday's session short, somehow one of the rear hex pins fell out so I lost all drive in one of the wheels. I've ordered a set of stainless hex's and replacement pins so should be good to go again in no time. I'm just filming on my phone at the moment, I have a gopro and an 808 #16 but no one to operate them. I tried some on board footage with the 808 but flipped it and the camera fell off, don't think I'll bother again.

Go for brushless! It's not uncontrollably fast but definitely has plenty of punch :D

Oh, my roll cage broke in the same place BTW, along with the wing. It was a fairly heavy upside down landing so I'm not complaining.

Hi everyone!

I also bought a brushless sidewinder a couple of months ago and I'm really enjoying it so far.

It's quite fast but seems to be a bit fragile too, especially the front arms. I had to replace a few of the plastic bits, due to reckless driving :sweatdrop: also the rear shocks are dead now...

However the main problem for me so far is the range...can't get more than 50/60m...is this normal?!

I'm interested about the gyro mod, which one did you go for?

I still need to take some nice pics and create an present myself so I do apologize for that

Hi, it's great to hear from another Sidewinder owner. Mine came with the gyro already installed, I removed it right away because I figured I'd learn more/better control without it. Funnily enough I reinstalled it today, I'll let you know how it compares next time I get out.

Post up some pics of your ride :)

Hi and welcome. I have the brushed version of this and I'm am more than happy with what I got for my money, yeah they are a bit fragile and I to due to a moment of shame had to replace one of the rear lower arms, to be fair it would probably of broke any buggy I would of bought as the angle it hit the post it was a direct impact on the rear wheel, but as a result of the lower arm snapping the way it did I belive it saved a few parts in the process so I was thankful for that. The only other part that has broke is the roll cage at the rear on on one on the screw holes but that's due to it rolling/Flipping on a hard surface so again I can't complain. Also the sidewinder comes with a gyro installed under the plastic driver, I haven't seen any info on a mod, but I maybe wrong or are you thinking of the servo upgrade maybe. Edited by NitricRC

Well I'm torn... I've ordered everything needed to get my sidewinder back to original condition (except for a new shell) and I'm torn between keeping it but going a bit easier on it or selling it while it's in good condition and still practically new and buying a brushed e-firestorm. Decisions decisions.

Personally I in your position would sell and get the firestorm, it was recommended to me a few times on here but for me I like what I have bought and have plans for it so I ain't to fussed. But seeing how hard of a thrashing you have gave yours I would go with something a bit more tougher I ain't been to the extreme with mine as you have with yours. Yet.

ive got a brushed firestorm and a sidewinder :)

the firestorm can take a beating, my girlfriends brother is using it at the moment and he smashes it into all sorts haha and it keeps going. its not as quick as the sidewinder so id recommend going for the firestorm flux or get a good combo for the brushed version.

Im really happy with the sidewinder though, i havent broken anything yet (touch wood) I use it on a skatepark and on a BMX track

Perfect, I was hoping to speak to someone who has experience of both. How much slower is the brushed firestorm compared to the brushless sidewinder? The guy at my lhs reckons the flux is way overpowered for bashing.

its quite a bit slower to be honest, especially with the sidewinder running on 3s. what you could do though is get a brushed version, see how you get on and then it leaves you 60 quid to get a decent brushless combo. Id deffo recommend the tbone bumpers for the firestorm

Thanks for the info, I'll start looking for a used flux or brushless conversion.

hey everyone,

Even though the Sidewinder is quite fragile I do like the way it looks  a proper Dune Buggy!

I'm thinking about upgrading the suspension, do you guys know any good shocks? I find the stock ones quite limited

The looks are one of the main reasons I would like to keep mine, I think it looks great in action. It handles really nicely too, the only downside for me is the durability.

Sorry, I can't help on which shocks to go for. I found mine bottomed out very easily so I wound the shock collars down about 8 turns and now it handles much better for what I use it for and takes a lot more to bottom out.
