petrol catamaran is a good option, modified they will easily achieve mid 60's, plenty of run time and reliable, can work out expensive but so can nitro and electric, watch out for people selling "high speed boats on 1.5hp petrol engine"s on ebay, its not gonna happen! I imported 2 marine engines from usa, both high hp, fitted in 2 cats, doubt either will do 70mph but will be fun,

BIG engine.

something like a 30+cc at the least gasser, with marine conversion.  no CY engine here, ie top grade billet marine job

tuned pipe the water feed exhaust are ideal to help with heat removal .

PROP.

you have to match a prop to the engine. props ONLY work at a certain RPM , above that rpm you get cavitation

this is small bubbles of air on the props surface, it causes damage to the prop and eats the metal away.

so a very GOOD metal prop is required,
Next is the props faces itself they need to be balanced and polished and made sharp.

theres two props surface piercing and sub surface, if a boat has a rooster tail its either a jet pump or its a surface prop.

drag boats - jet boats - turbine cats all produce a rooster tail.

Hull shape and design is also a factor , a catty will skim the surface  and have a smaller wet surface than a Deep V hull.

a fast boat is cool, a fast boat going belly up is a big huge dent in wallet and your going swimming to get it from dave's locker.

boats are unforgiving, unlike a car you can knock off speed and catch the squirreling somewhat.

with a boat its over in seconds, no reaction time at all, its like a quadcopter loosing two props " OHHHHHH S**************** " THUD

where as with a boat its more THUD SPLASH SPLASH THUD.

rule of them with a gasser, be able to buy the whole machine a second time over. a water clogged engine needs a huge stripdown

degrease / de-water and rebuild.  a hull could need a full reskin or an expensive gel coat repair.

I spoke to a guy who just threw a hedge cutter engine in a hull i don't know how it turned out lol. But he was very confident.

The only boat ill ever build is a fast slash 4x4 that could skim a pond at full speed mayb lol.

I think the petrol engines were originally chainsaw/weedeater conversions, don't worry about cavitation on a surface prop, ive had deep v's and cats over many years and no cavitation on them,if prop is too small engine will rev and boat will go slow, if prop is too big then engine will bog down and go slow, finding the right prop is trial and error, the correct prop is the right prop with the correct pitch for that particular boat, then there's the tuned pipe, shorter pipe higher revving less torque= smaller prop and vice versa, don't expect to buy one prop and it works, you can have a 70mm diameter prop with different pitches and and at 120usd a prop can work out expensive these are COCR, you can have cheaper beryllium copper or bronze props, if this all sounds too expensive or complicated, get a rtr, ideally a deep v they will run in most conditions, omra have them running from torquay to brixham following in a chase boat so can handle rough stuff, its also good fun,
