Greenham Common is great for electrics :-)

Greenham common is near Newbury, it's been the test site for my little Tamiya buggy

At the end near the drainage pools, near Thornford Park, there's loads of bumps and troughs - kinda like a moonscape.  A mix of uber short grass (thanks to the horses & cows) and gravel, with a few little short hawthorn bushes that make things interesting.  Plenty of flat bits to go fast on, other bits that are steep enough to be challenging ... I'm looking forward to summer when the pools are emptier so there will be some more extreme surfaces to drive on!

It's only really suitable for electric vehicles, because of the aforementioned cows & horses (plus many dogs, kids on bikes etc), but thats about it.  Oh, and the bit around the bunkers where they filmed bits of Star Wars VII are pretty cool to look at, too  starwars.gif

Went and did some extra exploring today and bumped into a Dad & son duo with nitro cars driving in an out-of-the-way bit (could hear them from way off though, lol).  Also gave my buggy an unexpected bath - turns out it's electrics are water resistant, lol

Went up today for a bit before lunch, my friend got to give his Tamiya Lunchbox it's first proper outing.  Afterwards we decided to do a bulk-buy of batteries so we can spend a solid couple of hours up there trundling about

Again, it was excellent - lots of shallow-ish puddle ice that was borderline strong enough to take a 1/10th scale electric car, so we did lots of pond skimming (with occasional baths, lol).  Also bumped into someone giving their xmas present 1/5th buggy a first run - impressive machine, but would be too noisy on a day with more people about ... also, it tore up the grass quite a bit.  Maybe I'm being a bit of an old lady about it, though.

I've been up to Greeham Common a lot as i live just down the road.

It has great places to use my Summit, but beware of stuff poking out of the ground in random places.

For what it's worth an old friend of mine is a warden up there and they take a very dim view of anything that makes alot of noise (IE with and engine) even if it is air borne because of ground nesting birds and the livestock. So be careful and think about what your going to use before you go off out. They genuinely want everyone to enjoy the area so there's no problem with RC stuff up there as long as common sense is used.

They're also getting a lot stricter about people fly drones up there as although it's disused they don't like people flying over the bunkers, over people out just out for a walk or livestock. A friend has been stopped and quizzed a couple of times about what he's up to with his hex (never been a real problem but they've made it clear if he over steps the rules he'll be out). But again all very friendly they're just trying to keep it usable for everyone.

There are some great places in the woods off Burys Bank Road for trail walking with scalers or trail trucks like my Summit

Hi there, it's ground-nesting bird season so some parts are off limits - for bashy stuff if you park on Old Thornford Road and walk west about 1/4 mile or so you'll find the interesting moonscape craters and stuff ... some of it has short hawthorn which can trip up a smaller vehicle, so keep an eye out for that, and there can be surprise puddles deep enough to sink an RC in.  BUT most of it's great :)

For crawling, if you park on the access road by Peckmoor Copse there's interesting woodlands all around.  I think that's where the Rangers are stationed, so it's definitely not an area to take anything noisy.

This is a real good place to walk around if you like trailing, it's quite popular with walkers though so if you don't like inquisitive people asking what your doing don't bother.

These was taken last year on the common, there are some great puddles up there, just check before you go charging in as some are deeper than they look.

I haven't been up to Greenham for a while, but once the evening's get lighter I'll try.

There are also a few places up at Bucklebury, you just have to be aware of noise because again all sorts of people use it (dog walkers, horse riders etc.)

This was last summer

The skate park in Thatcham was OK if your feeling brave and the kids are at school, I quite enjoyed it apart from the fact it was freezing cold when I went.

Sorry about the crap quality video, I'll never make a good film director LOL.

It would be good to try get a decent group of us and look for a more usable spot for everyone around Newbury, maybe we should start a West Berkshire thread for meetings?

I've been meaning to go for a wander around those woods in your first link, the council also have some countryside walks up near the M4 that look like they could be good for crawling, too :)

When the weather has finished being crap we'll definitely have to have a meet, I don't know of any other places for bashing around Newbury though (I only moved here at the start of winter)

I'm also from Newbury. Greenham common is virtually in my garden. And I've given up running anything that has an engine up there. People will complain. I do however quite often go to a spot on Hungerford common, I've never had a problem running 1/5th scale there and it has a good mix of terrain with a few good natural jumps. just my 2pence worth happy to meet up to throw some dirt if anyone's up for it

Yes I can well imagine running 1/5 up there wouldn't end well.

I've been up a few times with the Summit and had a wander around. Would like to take the Savage XS up somewhen although it's a bit of an animal for such bumpy terrain.

Never been to Hungerford Common, I'd be too worried about either upsetting the cattle or covering the buggy in something that they had left behind (or something that the multitude of dog walkers had left behind).

It would be cool to try and get a proper bashing spot as there must be a few of us locally, I've been wracking my brain for ages trying to figure out where though. Most places are either full of dog walkers or roaming livestock lol.

There is zero cow crap and dog walkers where I go it's an area surrounded by trees before where everyone parks at the main common. To be precise, where the sharp bend and big dip in the road is there is a small lay-by on the left its not the best spot but you're left alone

Pride comes before a fall, lol

I think I'll have to have a look at Hungerford Common as well then ... at Greenham I avoid the dog doo by walking 100m or so from any gate, as there seems to be a radius around it (not foolproof, but significantly better odds).  Also, never had a problem with cow pats, though that might be because my stuff isn't heavy enough to squish them unless they were 100% fresh.

In other news, I've mostly just been crawling and doing road stuff for the past couple of months as I broke my Stampede for parts.  That will be fixed later this month though :-)

Cool maybe I'll try and venture there next this weekend, I think I know where you mean.

I've been going up to Henwick and using the humps by the basketball court. There is a big area of grass next to it and either by luck or not I have had zero dog poo incidents. Kids can be a PITA occasionally.
