Boggy
After seeing one mentioned in a thread today and watching a few video's I like the look of these. Does anybody here have one or had experience with one?
Alex97
I've only ever seen one and I know very little about crawling but I'd say that it's a bit small and over priced. You could get a scout and have a much more capable crawler.
johninderby
Fantastic little crawler. Very capable and will go pretty well anywhere an Axial Wraith will go. Had a modded Scout but sold it on as it simply wasn't as capable as the Slickrock. http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/topic/193464-vaterra-slickrock-with-mods/ John
Boggy
I can't deny the maverick is great value and even including a rail chassis conversion kit still comes in at only a tenner more. but it was the slickrocks size that drew me to it. I thought it would be handy for a quick mess around after work once the evenings start drawing out.(i work away from home as a truck driver and usually have a little helicopter/plane with me but they are not always practical))
Boggy
Thank you for the link John my search brought up no results. I'll have a read.
johninderby
Yes the Scout is excellent value and a great budget crawler but I've had more fun with the Slickrock. Like you I wanted it for it's size and portability, everything will fit in a shoebox. I wasn't expecting it to be so good but it really surprised me. AlphaZero
Out of the box there nothing special and I think a tad overpriced and by the time you have upgraded the slickrock you could buy a SCX witch is more capable, personally I would only buy one if you really need a smaller crawler, however I would still buy one over a scout.
GilbertRC1
Definitely buy a slickrock, its a brilliant little car. here's the video i took of mine also you can use Losi mini crawler parts for it because apart from the cage its an identical car. johninderby
The Slickrock is basically the mini-crawler mechanicals with all the upgrades and metal options already fitted. Fitting a set of HB Rovers will make a big difference. So much more grip. John

Boggy
I have decided to pull the trigger on a Slickrock, but as a twist I'm going to add a few 1/10 accessories and extras to make it look like a small buggy/rail type crawler. Be interesting to see how your Slickrock turns out. It's easy to make your own body panels for a different look and plenty of scope for other mods. Boggy
Well its definitely top heavy, any thing over about 45 degree's and it rolls over on its back like a tortoise! The wires going to the esc are a tangled mess. The shocks seem way too soft and dont fully rebound which leaves the body tilted over at an angle once you get back on level ground. A few jobs to look at first I think.
johninderby
Yes I found the stock shocks are too feeble but standard alloy shocks fit OK. You can see what shocks I fitted in my Slickrock thread. The wiring is a real mess alright but easy enough to tidy up. Also changing to HB Rover tyres makes a rest difference. The stock tyres look OK but not very much grip. Also adding weight to the front wheels makes a real difference. Boggy
first mod (sort of) the slickrock tyres are glued so rather than pull them apart I swapped wheels with the Landfreeder. Makes both look better I think. And the Landfreeder isn't going to be a balls out crawler anyway! would 50g of garden wire wrapped around each front wheel center work for weight on the slickrock? johninderby
Best thing is lead. Either solder wire or strips of roofing lead. About 100g or more would be better. Alternatively some lead weights on the front axles would help or even on top of the servo. John
Boggy
Ahh! thanks for that John I thought it had to be in the wheels. I have plenty of wheel balancing weights that i use for aircraft I'll get busy then
Boggy
So some lead is on my shopping list for the wheels. , I'll have to wait till later,Sunday service is still on at the local church I have added 45g to the surface of the servo using alloy wheel weights . Quick question __does it all need to be "unsprung" weight or can i add some to the underside of the bonnet?. Edited January 4, 2015 by Boggy
johninderby
The weight really wants to be a low as possible but some on the underside of the bonnet would be OK temporarily until you get the wheel weight. This pic taken with the weight only in the front wheels as it was crawling over these concrete blocks. John
ReggieC
Did you glue the tyres on or is that a stock job? With respects, it's quite messy!
Boggy
thats how it came Reggie. it looks like some sort of silicon gel. thats a big differance John mine as is would be over on it back by then.
