desross
Hi , I am thinking about buying a used nitro buggy to bash around our local bmx track and was looking to find out if there are any stand out candidates, I am looking for something that will be tough , reliable and will require minimum input from me ( other than driving it). Also handy would be if I was easy to get parts easily in case of breakages . I am also wondering, should I be aiming for 2.4ghz or is 27 hz perfectly fine for what I have in mind .Also , should I be looking for one of the starter box thingies, or is the pull cord fine. The ones which seem to crop up in ebay at my budget (
DannyP
I will say it before anyone else, Hyper 7. Try buy off here rather than feebay. Less chance of buying a total dog. Starter box or pullstart is personal preference. 2.4ghz is the better choice. Nitro RC Nerd
Hyper 7 no doubt. As for what to avoid, I'm unsure if they are prevalent in the UK, but HSP models (RedCat/Exceed) here in the States are as bad as it gets. I went from an Exceed to a Hyper 7 and the quality difference is so extreme I cannot begin to explain it.
Nitroholic
Different companies ( well...different brand names really ) selling the same car is common. Ofna and Hobao are the same as far as the product. The UK is also infested with the HSP products. The picture is a little complex though, as a lot of these companies do not make cars....they just license them from other sources. Price and spec can vary on what is, on the face of it, the same car. It can be quite tricky to work out who actually makes what, and which ones are best. Forums can be a good source....but beware of 'received wisdom', where someone trashes a brand because someone else did. Always try and find out if the commenter has actually owned or used the car in question first! Mind you ...with HSP they are pretty cheap and nasty. People buy them because they are cheap and it's all they can afford. Then they run them a few times, blow the rear diff, kill the servos or bounce into a curb and snap the front suspension. The car then goes into the loft/shed/cupboard until the thing gets quietly E-Bayed later on as a 'project' for
Nitro RC Nerd
Yeah, I agree and in fact would say HSP is good for the hobby in the grand scheme of things. I highly doubt I would have entered the hobby with an initial purchase of $350 for a vehicle. I do get irked when they try to sell themselves off as durable when they are anything but...however the court of public opinion will answer it real fast. I cut my teeth on the Exceed Forza, did everything with it, and it broke 100% of the time. It LITERALLY broke one time going off the curb. Ha ha. But...parts were cheap (and inexpensive) so I got to wrench a lot and learn. When I did upgrade to the Hyper 7, as mentioned the difference was...well noticeable. The worst thing someone can do IMO, is get a low-end HSP model, and then as it breaks think they can upgrade it to become something it's not by getting duped in to hop-ups' they offer like aluminum a-arms, aluminum air filters, tanks, etc. I admit I almost went down that path...but the curb incident sealed it for me. ;-) I think the Hyper 7 is perfect for newbies as I'm unaware of any current RTR that comes close to its durability, parts-a-plenty, LOADS of potential, it's a buggy so you can do virtually anything with it, etc. etc. My second recommendation would be a Savage X because MTs are a lot of fun and that platform allows you to turn it in to anything you want. The community is great and very helpful, etc. However, it's not very durable out the box.
desross
Thanks for all of the info ! I am definitely going to go for a hyper 7 and now it's just a case of finding something at my budget. Daft newbie question - is the tick on the top right a 'like' button ? Do I press it if I liked the answer or comment ?
mydoddy69
Thanks for all of the info ! I am definitely going to go for a hyper 7 and now it's just a case of finding something at my budget. Daft newbie question - is the tick on the top right a 'like' button ? Do I press it if I liked the answer or comment ? Hypers are pretty robust but just remember all rc's are breakable !! Look and make sure you can find parts support for whatever it is you buy.. There's no fun in having an rc that breaks and you have to wait weeks for parts !! not so bad if you got a few rc's but if this is going to be your only one it can become frustrating !! .. Read this and your see the like button at the end About here !!!!!

desross
So , I have bought a hyper 7 tq2 from ebay. Guy says it is immaculate , having only been run for a maximum of an hour. 1st questions are - what fuel do I order ? And should I do the break in procedure - don't get the impression that the previous owner did this . Any other tips that I should definitely do/not do , bearing in mind that I have zero experience. Excited to be soon joining the nitro ranks ! Should be with me in a few days time :-)
Nitro RC Nerd
Okay, first tip would be to continue and do your homework like you are. Nitro RC gets expensive if you learn as you go (I know first hand). To answer your other questions: 1. I would get 20-30% of a quality brand (Byrons, Werks, ODonnel, Nitrotane, etc)... 2. I'm not familiar with the current stock engine but definitely set needles to stock (if you don't know just go flush/liush 3. No need to break in the engine again unless it's had 'work' done to it (re-pinched, and new parts) 4.I would suggest getting a new air filter and fuel delivery system (tank, lines, replace/clean inline filter). Just me....if you think the previous owner did not take care of it well, those would be the two things you don want. If you 5. Remove air-filter neck and ensure carb is not open while at neutral with electronics on. Starting a nitro for the first time can be frustrating. Apply heat to the engine before starting.A lot of guys use a heat gun by a blow dryer will work just as well. They are very easy to flood. The second you feel any sort of choppiness on the pull-start...stop and un-flood it. Also, if it does not start up or not even fire after a few pulls something is not right (flooded, not primed, bad plug/ignitor, idle set too low are most common). I hear about people pulling until they get blisters...they are wasting their time. If it doesn't start....it won't. Figure out what is stopping it. Some folks get lucky but most I know were challenged to start their first nitro on a consistent basis. I'd say if you start it tomorrow you've reached a milestone. Most of all, keep learning and leverage the support from the nitro community by asking anything and everything you are unsure of. Keep us posted!
