Mesc Speed Control, NiCad and Motor

Hi,

I have an old Boomerang I am trying to resurrect.

Just tried running it round the garden, and it seems to be much slower than I remember.

Are the 15-20 year old NiCads likely to be dead? Just gave them all a long trickle charge, and only got low speed and short running time.

If they are, as I expect, no longer useable, am I best to swap to NiMh batteries, and are these ok to use with the mechanical speed controller?

I also guess the old, original 540 motor is probably a bit worse for wear and storage. If I should swap this too, what would you recommend. I was thinking about the Tamiya sport tuned motor. I do not want to destroy the cars gear boxes with an OTT motor. It is all ball raced.

I do not want to throw lots of money at the car if, it is probably just better to get a new low end Tamiya (Neo Fighter etc).I have already had to buy a new chassis and front wishbones, which have been damaged in a house move. To but a new ESC, and Motor would have put me in the cheap new car territory!!!

Thanks for any help.

Rich

I did everything you describe to my old Tamiya buggy recently. NiMH will be fine if you were on Nicads, I'd suggest getting some newer batteries though and a decent charger but that isn't needed right away.

If it's any use, this is what I did;

- Replaced motor with Tamiya Sport Tuned RS540

I think I need to 'brush up' on brushless motors before I plunge down that route.

For now, I have ordered a couple cheap 3300mAh NiMh packs, a new carger, and the Tamiya Sport Tuned motor.

Maybe an ESC will be the next step!!! Maybe even a brushless motor - but perhaps a newer car would be better for that!

Thanks
