Tamiya Bruiser "Hog Heaven" Hilux

Recommended Posts

Evening chaps,

Haven't been on here for quite a while, been very busy with work for the last couple of years.

I'm considering the Tamiya Bruiser, extremely expensive but its the model I always lusted after as a kid but always dismissed it as it was big money back then, probably as much then as it is now! I've been doing some research on them and it really seems to be designed to a really high standard. Even the 30 year old ones you see on ebay seem to have faired really well.

Does anyone on here own one or even the mountain rider derivative and have any feedback they'd care to share?

I'd be tempted to run with an HPI Flux 4300kv BL setup 9T equiv. Would the three speed box cope? This motor is fine in my WT01 chassis and lunchbox gearbox.

Cheers

Thanks for the welcome, nice to see familiar names still here!

Cheers for the advice, I hear you on the shift gate, I have a Futaba FF7 I 'd like to put to good use for this application. With regards to the BL motor, I use this one http://www.modelsport.co.uk/hpi-flux-shot-4300kv-brushless-motor/rc-car-products/363294 which from what I gather is quite a mild BL, in that it may be a 380 size in a 540 body. It's the same size as a 540 externally but with all the heat sink etc I believe I read here it has 380 internals? Might be right, maybe not. Either way it runs really well in my other trucks and the mapping module means you can soften the punch etc. It's a 9T equivalent.

There's one of those original mountaineer Hilux' on Ebay. Would be nice if they re re that shell in black for the Back to the

Future anniversary next year!!

Cheers

Thanks Yoodoo,

That sounds awesome..... are you tempted to build it?!

I've ordered a Re re Bruiser now. Hopefully it'll be with me next week and I'll have to put it up for xmas.

I'm planning to run it off my Futaba FF7 heli control (don't use the heli). Hopefully I'll be able to rig up the transmission to the three position switch on the remote instead of using the throttle control with a shift gate.

I'd like to run it with an HPI Flux shot 4300kv motor and matching waterproof programmable ESC along with a pair of Savox waterproof BB, metal gear servos.

Need to decide what to do with the body, I'd like to stick with the box art theme but maybe paint the blue in a metallic blue, although it won't look period, that said it is a Re re so it brings it up to date with its contemporary release along with commensurate BL/Lipo power.

Will put up a build thread when I start, not sure what section to put it in; Monster truck, scaler or crawler?

Cheers

10.5 turn brushless and LiPo to suit....I don't know what the the more modern Bruiser is like but I wouldn't put that in a vintage.A friend put a 9T in his vintage and blew the box to bits.

Looking forward to the build.

That's interesting about your friend, mines also a 9T equiv. one of the reasons I'm tempted to rig up the 3 position switch is to eliminate bad gearchanges, instead of being proportional it'll go straight to the right position and eliminate accidental mis shifts! Well that's the plan anyway!

At least with mappable esc's you can turn down timing and initial punch. I'll start low and gradually turn it up a bit.

Cheers

Welcome back and very nice purchase, box looks massive for this kit :)

My finger has hovered over the buy button for the mountain rider quite a few times. Definitely intrested in your brushless setup and how the bruiser copes with it.

Here's one of my favourite videos for the mountain rider by matteo, just captures the spirit of the model.

Right back to looking at Stella model prices, could be time to get one in lol.

That's a great video. Thanks for that, love the doughnuts and night riding!.

They seem to hop and bounce a fair bit so BL might be 'interesting'. I'm really, really, looking forward to it!

Thanks

I received this about a week and a half ago though I've resisted the temptation to open the box!

med_gallery_28308_3720_345470.jpg

What I have done is decommissioned my rarely used heli and recommissioned my Futaba FF7 7ch remote to run the Bruiser. I've configured the servos and switchgear so that the gear changes will be operated from a three position switch instead of going with the shift pattern approach. I'm hoping this will reduce the likelihood of any mis shifts.

Looking at blue paint colours now and looking to finally get an airbrush as I'd like to step up the prep standard a notch with this one, well that's the illusion I'm chasing. Will start a seperate build thread when I start. I'm really looking forward to it, while at the same time fussing trying to ensure everything is in place and perfect before starting!!

Here is my barely used Futaba FF7 sacrificing itself for the Bruiser build. I think it should be an ideal radio, quite in period with the Bruiser itself as Futaba are probably one of the longest standing manufacturers of radio equipment. I always used to have ATTACK-R's back in the day. I bought the red neck strap last week so I don't go dropping it!

Ignore the servo's they are purely while I mess about setting up the remote.

Below is the 3 position switch I'm planning to use for the transmission; 2L, 4L, 2H

And just in case you didn't clock it in the earlier pic, check out the model name in the settings lol (only 6 characters unfortunately!!);

:)

I also have the remote setup in a different memory as an alternative configuration, but I'm not sure if it'll work in practice. That is to use the three position switch in Heli mode which activates Idle ups, basically it'll give me 3 different throttle curves. Then use a 2 position switch for the transmission to shift between 4L and 2H since 2L seems pretty pointless. But, I don't know if the transmission requires to go through 2L first to get to 2H so I'll have to wait and see if this is feasible. The beauty with this transmitter is I can select either at the press of a button. I could also set up another mode with the transmission shift in the traditional H layout. Because I'm thinking of running brushless power I'd pretty much ruled that out in case of any accidental mis shifts.

I bought and built a Mountain Rider a couple of months ago, plus a second shell and all the relevant parts to make a Bruiser body as well. I've painted that one TS-51 Metallic Racing Blue but I'm not happy with it and it's too cold to paint so will redo it in Spring.

It's an amazing looking truck but the last thing I'd want to do is put a brushless setup in, unless it's a crawler one. I've got a 35t brushed motor in mine and even that feels too fast. It's just not a very stable truck and the suspension travel is quite limited.

I'd be more concerned with damage to the body that stripping gears - given how long it took to paint and detail I'd be mortified to even scratch it!

Here's mine:

That looks beautiful. Great job on the shell what colour is that? Did you airbrush that or rattle can, and is it lacquered?

I hear you on the shell, I'm considering a shelf queen body and a seperate basher body, planning to prep both to a high standard but one I'll have to accept will get damaged and cause me to cry!

As tempting as it is to have this as a shelf queen, it seems too much of a waste not to use it. That said my basher WT01 is great fun for bashing and I'm hoping it'll be a really satisfying build. I have a Jun Hornet which is a shelf queen. No matter how well you clean it, once used you'll never get it looking box spangly again.

Hmm, I'm looking at Createx Auto Air Blues, was originally thinking Blizzard Blue (sparkelescent) over dark base.

But it is being phased out, so now thinking the Teal blue

Or Brite Blue

Pearlised Blue

Or finally Racing Blue;

I don't know what blue this is...but it looks good;

Thanks! Rattle cans using the box art specified TS-39 Red Mica. I used Tamiya fine grey primer, TS-30 Silver Leaf (as the Red Mica is slightly translucent), the TS-39 then TS-13 clear lacquer.

Black side badges and window trims again with a can, TS-29 semi-gloss black. Brushed X-11 for the silver bits.

Aside from a Blackfoot Xtreme I badly painted for my brother about 3 years ago this is my first hard body. (My Blackfoot III has a Twin Det polycarb shell, Tundra was second hand and already painted and the Scorcher and Clod I've done since this Hilux) Second attempt on this shell though as I dropped it first time :(

We have a similar fleet.

I have a Bullhead, Mud Blaster II same as Blackfoot III (but polycarb Brat shell), and a Dual Hunter (polycarb). I love the WT01 chassis like your blackfoot III. You might be interested in this build thread; http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/topic/160586-tamiya-wt01-wr01-monster-truck-build/

You've done a great job on it. I'm gearing up with an airbrush, always wanted a decent one and the Bruiser is the perfect excuse to gear up and turn the paint level up a few notches. It turns out that Autoair have changed the part number and name to Blizzard Blue II, so Blizzard blue II over dark base it'll be. Hope it looks good in the flesh and suits the Bruiser.

My only previous experience with a hard body was my son's Mad Bull, he liked the Focus RS green, so I used Halfords primer, Halfords special colour matched Ford Ultimate Green (Focus RS green) but didn't lacquer it. Should have done really but I tried halfords lacquer on some wheels and it killed the paintjob. I don't think I let the paint cure for long enough. Anyway, the shell doesn't look like that now lol!! It's missing the A-pillars for a start which I've replaced with metal make do ones!!

I love that green too, but as this is my full size toy I would say that!

I'd seen that thread (been lurking for a while) Nice work! Mine's got RCDamper shock towers, 100mm Ansmann oil shocks, 12T brushless. Painted pearlescent white and the wheels are (originally yellow) BF Xtreme painted matt black. Not done much on it recently but just made the jump to lipo, got a couple of batteries and charger arriving this week.

Just going to be starting it today, build thread is now in the vintage section. Tough decision on the hot hatches, how about the renaultsport megane in the mix too?

Cheers

They look good but they are French and full of misfitting plastic.....I'm trying to get shut of one now.
