olliep
Hello everyone, I was thinking of buying a R/C car for my eight year old son as a birthday present. Can anyone recommend something that would be suitable for a beginner of his age (With help from his dad) but would last for quite a while and give him a good introduction to outdoor R/C cars? Many thanks

Deafty
Lc racings emb is tougher, but I think a buggy is too 'open' externally for damage (shock mounts getting scrapped to death, lack of bumpers etc.) heres a budget vs of what I'm thinking. Brushed motor, though for the coin... Edited October 31, 2014 by Deafty
olliep
Thanks all for your replies. I'd like it to be a father/son activity for grassed areas, parkland etc. Needs to be budget as it would be our first one...

olliep
Looking into this a bit more the run time is 5-8 mins. Is this good? What about petrol controlled cars - there must be a good recommended beginners one of those?

Alex97
Tamiya madbull is a great start. Its pretty much bullet proof and has some options for upgrades like, better shocks, faster motor, ball bearings (you want these out the box) and better wheels and tires. Its really easy to work on and build, part support is good and looks good to. http://www.modelsport.co.uk/tamiya-mad-bull/rc-car-products/226 http://www.modelsport.co.uk/tamiya-fighter-buggy-rx-mad-bull-mad-fighter-br-set/rc-car-products/1029 http://www.modelsport.co.uk/absima-cr2s-v2-2-channel-2.4ghzradio-control-system/rc-car-products/376271 http://www.modelsport.co.uk/hpi-plazma-7.2v-4300mah-nimh-stick-pack-re-chargeable-battery/rc-car-products/38774 http://www.modelsport.co.uk/overlander-rc6-vsp-80watt-7a-output-ac-dc-charger-with-fan/rc-car-products/379060 http://www.modelsport.co.uk/absima-s90mh-9kg-25t-jr-metal-gear-servo/rc-car-products/381461 Most that stuff will last him for a while and can be used on other cars later on. Peter Griffin
You'll want electric as nitro can be too fiddly for a newbie. You want something pretty tough, but I've always said the most important thing is parts availability. What good is a broken rc just sitting there because you can't get the parts to fix it. No rc is unbreakable. Just because someone hit a kerb at high speed with a certain rc and didn't break it means nothing. They were just lucky ( that time ). If you're thinking of keeping it for a long time, spend as much as you can, you can always say it's your birthday present too.
Tamiyacowboy
maybe a tamiya grasshopper. they have come down in price a fair bit as of late, A retro styled sand-dune buggy from the late 70's to early 80's. rugged is the word, spare are numerous being a re-run of the vintage classic ( 43yr old that once owned a grasshopper as a little lad ) if you want something more rugged but a lot of swap ability you can go for a Tamiya pumpkin / lunchbox. strip away the oversized chassis and wheels and you have a tamiya Grasshopper at the base. you could start off with a funsized monster truck, and later purchase a grasshopper chassis tub and swap your bits over. some buggy wheels to finish off and your done. the tamiya lunchbox becomes a tamiya grasshopper. the mad bull is a beast to also made by tamiya, but these models are aimed at the newcomer to the hobby. simple design layouts and good repair- replacements side. have a youtube search when the young man is not around on tamiya grasshopper and tamiya madbull also seach out tamiya vanessa's lunchbox. the tamiya grasshopper has a Brother buggy named the Tamiya Hornet, this is more a early 80's mid 80's buggy style with a rear wing Edited November 1, 2014 by Tamiyacowboy
Deafty
Anything smaller than 1:10 will struggle on grass,. even 1:10 imo is too small, though where I live the grass is thick and heavy Nitro for a newbie,. then a second hand nitro I think not, you may have success but if and more than likely when an issue arises you will be pulling your hair out in frustration,. stick with a leccy for ya 1st. 5-8 min run time is not alot. the afore mentioned 50 euro truggy comes with a charger,. though if you buy extra packs it will e of preference to get a standalone charger,. We can all help you with that after you shortlist some models.

atom3624
The Traxxas should have 'training mode' as well, which automatically sets the maximum throttle setting at half power. Al.
