FTX Hooligan

I've been looking for a while now at electric rc rally and the FTX Hooligan looks to offer the best spec for the money. Has anyone else here bough/tried one? also looking at the size of it seems a bit bigger than 1/10 that it's claiming to be, if it's difficult to get body shells I might have a go customizing the original shell, if so any tips for doing this would be great :)

Chassis looks almost identical to the FTX Vantage / Carnage's - obv with minor differences to account for rally style rather than truggy/buggy.  In which case they seem well received for a budget model.  Electrics are Lipo happy too which is a bonus, and the 15t can should be pretty nimble - run times will be awful with inc nimh though.

Shells shouldn't be an issue to get - ftx site lists them, painted and clear (clear currently oos).

Ought to add don't see other shells fitting being an issue either - drop MS an email, there sure to help.

Parts are uber cheap, Hobby King sell a version of the FTX Buggy, branded as a Quanum Vandal.  Possible some of the parts are interchangeable with the hooligan - worth checking out for when you get some lipo's from them.

Looking on MS some parts are def shared:

etc

Didn't realise that FTX has a 10th TC too - Banzai - again prob shares parts.  Check the forum for people thought's on that too maybe.

This is a little off topic but would that shell fit any 1/10 buggy with the use of different body posts. You could have a buggy for off road bashing the with a change of shell and tires you have a rally car.

I took the plunge and bought a brushed Hooligan, a Trackstar 80a/3000kv combo, a complete set of rubber shielded bearings and some 3s LiPos.

As the owner of both a Carnage and Vandal I was surprised to find the plastics feeling a lot higher quality than the other two as I began the strip down and rebuild. I wanted to make sure the drivetrain could handle 3s power! Turns out it can. The body can't though, or maybe I just need more space lol.

Here's Project Why after his first run:

I bought one of these only last week, just the rolling chassis.. And I must say I'm very impressed! Had quite a few bits laying around so I fitted a brushless 5200kv motor, 60A leopard esc and running 2S. It's all it needs, it's nuts!

Handled well out the box, after some tweaking on the esc program card to get the motor to respond to suit the car it went really really well. Anyone else having fun with these?

I took mine out yesterday for a bit of a blast down on the marina car park in Aberystwyth. The recent storms had left loads of fine shaley gravel all over the road so I figured it could be fun. How right I was, Right up until the spur got trashed. Had a great time. 3000kv and 3s is the way to go!

I've used mine quite a lot since I've had it, been down an indoor RC club Pembrokeshire, it performs really well. Shell is looking a bit battered n bruised now.. Not done anything to it really other than change the wheels/tyres as they'd become worn, and change the damper oil. Other than that on 2S, stock brushed pinion, and a 5200kv brushless motor it'll reach a whopping 53mph according to my gps :@.@:

Where is the indoor club? Hoping to move down to Carms from near Aberystwyth at some point soon.

It's at Carew airfield mate, there's a large hanger there which they hold markets and auctions in every so often, our club meets there every Wednesday evening inside. They normally run 3 classes; short course trucks, rally cars, and touring cars. There's also an outdoor track which we use every now and then in the summer months, it's also used as an event for the nationals (1:10 buggy etc)..

its a good laugh, friendly atmosphere and anyone will help you get on the grid to race.

Yeah it's just off Sageston roundabout, ya can't miss it! Every Wednesday evening from 7pm racing starts, everyone tends to get there for 20 to, set up etc.. just ask for Tim (who runs it) and he can sort things out for you

Won't be able to make it on a Weds for a while. Hopefully when I move down that way I'll be free.

Don't worry about it mate, I can't make every week too due to working away at sea, and when I'm home if the missus is working on a Wednesday evening then I'm at home looking after the baby..

There's a regular group who go every week, and some of us who can only turn up when we can. The classes run are entertaining to say the least, SCT's are great (I have a Basher SCT for that) crashes galore, and then the Rally cars (use an FTX Hooligan) - they're just utter carnage! Laughs galore..  And the touring cars are all prim n proper (fairly boring actually as no one crashes - they can all drive!)

hope to see you there anyway when you get the time.

Been getting the Hooligan and Basher ready for tonight's racing, should be laugh as always!

All I've done to the Holligan is add anti-roll bars, change the shock oil (to 30wt I think all round), change the wheels/tyres (same as the HPI rally tyres) and use the stock pinion which came with it. I bought it new as a rolling chassis, and just added my own electrics. The motor is 5200kv, 60amp leopard esc and it runs 2S. Ideal for an indoor track!

Had the hooligan out racing this evening, did brilliantly well too! Ditched the hpi rally tyres for new set of stock wheels/tyres, much better. Need to invest in some new 2S lipo's now as the BRCA are changing the club racing rules for April from use of the soft packs to hard case batteries instead..
