Popular Post Tug
OK, I'm a bit late to the Savvy party, but it's better late than never. I briefly owned a HB Hogzilla a few years back, it was as poorly engineered as the original e-Maxx! It broke if you looked at it and was horrible to work on. So let's move swiftly on! Having got a Super 5sc flux, I quickly learnt my way around the Savvy platform properly this time and quickly grew to love it. I now relish the thought of getting the screw gun out and whipping a TVP off. Now, once I'd decided the S5 was a keeper, I started stock piling parts I thought I might need. Then ended up with so many I decided to make better use of them. I was short of quite a few niggly bits, but they weren't hard to source. Once I'd completed the front and rear ends, it was time to go shopping for the chassis, having had Alza parts before, that's where I went this time too. I've gone for the 5mm buggy chassis, I love its looks and that's all that matters. The motor is the Leopard 4092, 1480 kv. I've had this a while, but not really used it yet, so figured this project would suit it. The gearbox is the leftover from the S5. The battery boxes are also from the S5 as I've recently changed those. The Rx box was ridiculously cheap, stripped from a Savvy flux. The servo is a Hitec 7995, 24kg item, a fantastic piece of kit. Picked up deletes from Tower Hobbies, great retailer. The ESC is an MGM item, 160 Amp. This should cope, but if it doesn't (it has no cooling fans) I'll either fit a fan or swap for a Castle or HW. I'm using a HK uBEC. I know there are colour variations between the ally bits, but it was never my intention to build a show stopper, just a tough basher. The cabling needs tidying, possibly re- routing, but she's now a runner and looking good. I'm really chuffed with this, not just because of what I've built, but because I built it from the ground up! That's all for now, it's too late, dark and wet for test runs. Needless to say, I'll report back as the testing starts. I'll also be trying a CD conversion with a large can motor. I bodged the order for the parts needed, but Dejan is sorting that out, top fella that he is! Any thoughts or tips are welcome as I'm still learning on the Savvy front. Vids will follow when time and weather permit. Let me know what you think. Back soon.
Oh How Original
Got to say Clive (I'm not a huge Savvy fan if I'm totally honest) but that look great!
Tug
Cheers, appreciated. I was torn between the XL and the 5b version. Next up, I'm building a 5b version! I'll have me a fleet of Savvys!
Oh How Original
Well if the Super 5 and this are anything to go by, they shall make for some very good build threads!
Tug
The 5b version will have to wait until next year, but that gives me time to start building the front and rear again!
capri-boy
Looking great! Good to see how these things live on - I miss my nitro savvy's but doing something like yours could tempt me over to the dark side! Certainly enjoying leccy 1:10 and the hyper. Tug
Cheers, there'll be more to this for sure. Can't wait to drive it! Can't decide on sway bars, they work well on the S5, does this need them?

Tug
Cheers, just need to start the shakedown now. I've still got a lot of threadlocking to do. Anyone know what Centre skid plate fits this? I'M A NOOB!
DreXeL
Great build! I've recently done a brushless conversation on mine using an Alza CD mount, quality bit of kit and adds a nice amount of stiffness to the chassis too. I would highly recommend the Alza bulkhead braces too, they eliminate one of the few remaining really weak points of the Savage platform. Wrighty8766
The diffs are a major problem on these in my eyes, I was forever snapping teeth off of the 9t 'bulletproof' pinion, since I have got the ALZA cd conversion I haven't had any issues and it has improved the drivability of the truck massively! I am surprised to see that the 4092 fits in there with the stock transmission, my calculations with that one said it was about 2-3mm too long ha Looks sweet bud, I was thinking of getting the XL buggy style chassis but I didn't like how vulnerable the front/rear shock towers look and I was unsure wether you could still fit a body on with that chassis
Nitroholic
Looking nice I do love a Savage or two myself.
Tug
Cheers chaps, still feeling my way with the Savvy, so all tips are welcome. The CD does a better job of protecting the drivetrain than just a slipper, unless you manage a perfect four wheel landing under power! However, using the stock Super 5sc transmission means I've got both, a CD and a slipper! The diffs are shimmed, so hopefully won't give me any issues. I will be trying the CD from Alza, just need some more bits to arrive. Before that I'll give her shakedown as she is, my calculations show speeds should be reasonable. I'm not looking for ballistic speeds, anything 40+ will suffice. Braces will be hopped should I start breaking them regularly. The motor barely fits! I've had to shuffle it forward as far as I can and it's still catching the off-side TVP! Five minutes with a file, should I feel the need, and that'll fix that. Centre skid anyone? Tug
I'm not sold on the Trencher X's, they're so damn big! Maybe they'll find a permanent home on the 5b version I'm determined to build? I've some old Big Joes on Axial off-set rims, I'll try those at some point too.
DreXeL
I've got a centre skid plate on mine, came included with the 6mm Innovative RC TVPs, which was a nice touch. If you really want to push the boat out you could fit some IRC Big Bore v2 shocks too. I've got a set and they are absolutely bomb proof. They do add a lot of weight to the truck though. DreXeL
Are Trencher-X's bigger than Big Joes then? I'm running Big Joes and they are massive, was tempted by Trencher-X's if/when I need to replace the Joe's but if they're that much bigger I don't think I'll bother.. Tug
I think I saw some pics of yours, had some issues with stand-offs? I'll run these for now and see how they hold up. Their spring and oil weight ratio is spot on!
Tug
I'll find you a picture for comparison, they're huge!
DreXeL
I never had any fitting issues with them, no. They fitted like a glove with the IRC fitting kit. Only 'issue' I had was the fact that they raised the ride hight too much, I solved that by flipping the suspension arms.
Wrighty8766
This is mine with the trenchers on, and yes they are massive and heavy lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Tug
They're wide too, not just tall! That was it, the ride height! I remember you sorting it!
