A vintage noob with vintage toys

Hi All,

I'm back to the RC world after a short break - just 20 odd years away! I guess I'm re-living my youth or something like that.

I was mainly into planes (fixed wing IC) back in the day, but also enjoyed some fun with cars (electric).

I've started dabbling with RTF quadcopters (wow, are those things fun to fly), but really feel the need to build something - the build process was always a huge part of the fun for me.

Anyway, after re-kindling my interest in the hobby I've been digging in the loft and found some of my original toys - safely boxed up and stored for 20+ years! So at the weekend I popped the old NiCads(!) on charge, put some new batteries into the Tx and tried to contain my excitement. To my huge delight both cars worked just as they did 20+ years ago (although the old NiCad's didn't want to hold very much charge, so playtime was short-lived).

So now it's decision time, can I bring myself to sell on the old vintage cars to fund a new build? I'm finding it tough to part with them, but I think it's the only way to go if I want a new build project.

I forgot to mention what the vintage toys are.

1, The absolute classic Tamiya Hornet. Nearly 30 years old and still going strong with ALL original parts!

2, Awesome Kyosho 1:10 Calsonic Skyline GT-R32 based on the uber-classic Optima mid chassis.

I'm toying with the idea of tweaking the skyline and converting it to a full off-road buggy, but it seems such a shame to mess with it. It is completely original, very carefully built, only been run a few times, and seems to be very rare - I've had a good look but can't seem to find another one anywhere.

I shall probably try to get some better idea of the value of these before making a final decision on what I do with them. But one way or another I will be back to building RC again - that sure does feel good :)

Cheers

OD

That was a nice read. Welcome mate, this is a awesome forum. My first car was a Tamiya grasshopper and oh how I enjoyed it. Wish I kept it and packed it away, would have given it to my son :)

Good luck on the new project.

Welcome along!

I don't think i'd sell the vintage models. Why don't you take the existing Hornet back to its original exploded-self, clean it and rebuild from scratch? That'd get you back into building RC for free until funds are available.
