Hornet to Brushless and Lipo?

I've not been into rc since I was a kid and recently have been given an old Tamiya Hornet which I'd like to improve speed and runtime wise before I get something more modern.

It (like all r/c's at the time) has a mechanical speed controller that I'd like to upgrade - how and any recommendations on parts?

I've bought a couple of lipo's, some connectors to replace the Tamiya ones, a low power warning buzzer, a full bearing kit and stronger steering arms - need suggestions on a motor, if this is possible and any general tips. I already know it's likely not the best starting platform :/

How old is old? If it is an original from back in the day I'd consider putting aside and shelling out for something else.
