At your age lack of actual driving experience barely effects the insurance cost at all - except for the obvious fact you don't have any no claims bonus.

My wife learnt to drive about the same age as you and started with a 5dr 1.4 Focus. The insurance cost for that wasn't any worse than a 1 litre supermini because that sort of car tends not to have many accidents.

If you have a provisional license go and buy the cheapest banger you can. Park it on the drive and insure it now. That way your building up no claims which makes a huge discount. I live In a good area and my instance on a 1.5 peugot 106 was about

thats a great tip building no claim on provisional i never thought that was possible.

So if i got something left it on the road outside my house insured for the absolute minimum the year i want to be driving i could get fully comp with 1yr no claim. or would the dummy car have to be fully comp too.

Anyone got a 3 wheelier Robin roller lol.

actually the saving would have to be pretty big to buy a year insuance to let sit. like if the car i want is 2k. the dummy car is 500 then with no claims the would be 2k quote becomes 1k saving 500.

but might not work out like that lol.

If you park on the road, you'll need tax and an mot.

Do you have room to keep a small car off the road? If so, buy an old mini or similar, insure third party only, SORN the car (so no tax to pay), sell off any useful parts to go towards the insurance, then, when you're year is up, scrap/sell on what's left and buy the on road car :)

And remember you can't buy a car with tax anymore, so anyone selling with tax is very naughty indeed.

i wouldn't expect many people to know this, atleast not until they come to tax their car as this law only came in 2 days ago.

what he says is correct though, since october 1st all tax is done online, tax disks are no longer a requirement, and tax no longer transfers to the new owner when the car is sold, any remaining months are refunded and the new owner must buy their own tax for the vehicle.

Madmini's plan will be harder to do because of it, unless you have a driveway or a garage.
