Trawling through the Modelsport UK shop I have found a great little RTR package for a special price...

The classic Tamiya Grashopper!

This would be a perfect package to welcome a newbie to the hobby or simply give you and the little one an RC to build at Christmas which is only a few months away!   :)

Not a good deal with that radio, I still have nightmares about 27mhz AM; any newbie will end up frustrated with control and range issues, and end up having to spend more money to upgrade to 2.4ghz. Given how cheap 2.4 is these days, it's silly not to do a bundle with a modern radio system...

When I ran my Tamiya buggy on the beach a couple of months ago with the old Acoms 27mhz, it was out of sight before it went out of range. I'd say a good 7-800 feet, maybe more. I since replaced the 27mhz with a spare RX which I removed from my Maverick scout, and had a runaway incident when it was barely 150ft away. Maybe I got lucky with lack of interference on the beach, and maybe the maverick is just a naff 2.4Ghz, it just doesn't seem that night and day to me yet. I've now got a Flysky in both but haven't done a proper range test yet.

I just ordered this bundle yesterday after trawling RC websites for a 'retro hit' :D

Can't wait for it to arrive as my brother had the original 'hopper when it first came out and I loved it.

Did opt for an extra fast charger, though, as the trickle charger would annoy me.

Tbh, i'm happy with the 27Mhz... I wanted 'proper' retro, and 2.4Ghz kits always seem to come with steering wheel controllers??

Well, built my Grasshopper today - Took about 3 hours, but i'm not the fastest RC mechanic :D

My god, it's slow compared to brushless gear i've had, but then I entirely expected that, given it only has a 380 motor.

Good opportunity to upgrade to a 540 at some point.

Despite its name, it isn't particularly 'hoppy' on grass :D

Hmm... what to get next...
