vandalbulldog
Hya all. I have recently had a front end smash on the baja which has resulted in a new chassis. Having rebuilt in (and adding hub extenders) i have noticed that when i have the steering links set to the same length, the right wheel toes in significantly more than the left and will not toe out even close to parallel to the chassis side, even when the link is fully extended. Has anyone had any similar issues or are your Baja's well toed in at the front?? Any help would be great... VB.
Thunderwolf
i would keep away from the link and closer to the servo saver and servo horn fella, sounds like it isn't centered.
vandalbulldog
That sounds like great advice. I'll have a look there first!! Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
vandalbulldog
So, i have ensured the servo horn is in the 10 degree position, replaced the horn on the end of the servo saver where the servo link clips on and still there is a noticeable toe in which i cant dial out to a parallel wheel alignment. It is more noticeable at the right side. I have toed in the left wheel to march but it does seem excessive. I wonder if this is a result of using hub extenders and if because of this i need shorter links?? VB.
vandalbulldog
Right, a bit more work this morning and I have noticed this plate is bent. Should it be?! Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
Noj
Nope should be totally flat, time for another new part methinks! I run extenders on both of ours, no toe in problems at all...
vandalbulldog
Oh damn it! The servo saver looks to be just fine so I think this must be throwing it out. Do you have a picture of one of yours Noj so I can see what your front end toe looks like?? Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
Noj
Leave it with me fella, will get one up this avo for ya
Nitroholic
I run mine with zero toe on the front....and extenders. Extenders won;t make a difference to the adjustment...just exaggerate it a little. The adjustment is on the hub itself. I would suspect you have either damage to the upright or the bit the steering arm attaches to. With the adjusting turnbuckle roughly halfway in, you should have the wheels centred. First thing I would do would be to swap the steering turnbuckles over .... see if the problem goes with it. Then check everything else is centred. With a bent upper plate, that's a natural after effect of a smash big enough to write-off a chassis. If you bolt up everything else tight with the upper plate off, it should all be in the right place. Hammer the plate flat and bolt it on. Ideally...replace it. With an IRC or Turtle one. If your steering arms are the same length and nothing else is bent or broken, your left and right steering should be the same.
Noj
here are our pair, the SC runs aftermarket steering links, the 5B runs stock out of the box (nb, there is a little play in components on the B's front end) :
vandalbulldog
Guys, huge thanks for both of your input into my frustration and cheers Noj for taking the pictures. With the brace off it looks like the wheels will toe centred so figured there must be some problems with it. The brace also has stretch marks around the holes for the saver posts so believe this will be exaggerating the play and toe too. I've ordered an IRC brace to match my recently acquired chassis and lower brace. I've been thrilled with all the IRC parts so far and this has given me an excuse to add even more. I'll update once the brace is on... Thanks again.
Nitroholic
I got an IRC upper/lower brace combo. Can't fault it
vandalbulldog
Looking forward to completing the IRC front end!!
vandalbulldog
Right, new upper brace on and still I have a toe problem. As you can see from the image below, the right hand wheel is toed in. Both rods are wound in as much as possible so all I can do is toe in more. Can anyone spot anything obvious or what would you suggest next?? Noj
Has to be the links, if all other parts are straight. What make are they?? Can you measure eye to eye? I will measure up ours after mi shower
smeghead28
Swap the rods over and see if you then have the problem on the left side. Is it possible the rod itself is bent slightly?
vandalbulldog
Hi guys. The rods i have on there are new and are both true and straight. The original HPI's were bent (and still toe'd in) so I replaced with these. If you can let me know the length I will see if the parts are set correctly? Noj
Mine (made by mark7616) are approx 110mm eye to eye, the stockers on our lasses are approx 112 eye to eye.
vandalbulldog
Cheers pal, top info. I'll check against what I have and update!!
vandalbulldog
Finally a result! So, it turns out that the replacement links i ordered are longer than stock and will not wind in to 110mm. I stripped them down and used the new turnbuckes (as my hpi's were banana'd!) and the existing rod ends and have put together new links at stock length. The result is a perfectly parallel front end so I am very happy! In working this whole thing out I have replaced the chassis, lower and upper brace and a few other bits for IRC products so I'm hoping the result is a tougher Baja which might survive the knock next time!!
