Broken pull start - do i go to engine starter

Finally managed to snap the cord. surprised it took this long to be honest.

I can mess about repairing it, replace it with another pull start OR change to an engine starter.

Car is a Thunder Tiger Tomahawk BX

Is this is the right part to do the job?  http://www.modelsport.co.uk/thunder-tiger-direct-drive-back-plate-new-style-pro-21-28/rc-car-products/30926

Am i doing the right thing by upgrading?

Cheers

You have the .18 engine? That part you linked is for larger engines.

Personally I would fix the pull start, with the roto start there is something else to carry and charge....if you are prepared to carry/charge then a starter box is the best option.

Gotta agree with the previous post. Fix the pull start, but get a starter box for regular use. Pull start comes in handy when you're well away from your tool box. 10mins setting up the starter box properly will pay you back big time.

The best thing with starter box is that you can get rid of the one way bearing (drag)...and put a closed backplate.

Starter box- big rubber wheel driven by an electric motor/s in a box.......put car on box and push down......electric motors turn the big rubber wheel......rubber wheel contacts engine flywheel to turn crankshaft...(hopefully) engine starts.

Roto- The engine has a one way bearing and a shaft connected to the rear of the crankshaft.....the shaft is connected to gears that can be driven by a electrically driven handheld starter or drill....when you operate the starter button the gears turn the shaft that locks the one way bearing....thus the crankshaft turns and (hopefully) the engine starts.

(note there are many different types/designs of roto...that is a general idea of what happens.)

Downsides to both ime. You quite often need to fit a bigger fly wheel and possibly trim chassis if you keep the pull start on the engine otherwise you don't get a contact with the starter box wheel.

For a rotostart they're heavy on the OWB and don't give the feedback that pullstarts do. Rotostarts slip in a reasonable size pocket, it's a big pocket that fits a starter box. Starter box and pullstart combo give you flexibility that roto's don't.

So there's multiple angles to consider. I have a starter box but don't bash from the boot of my car so don't bother with it tbh. Too much weight and size to lug around while the roto fits in back pocket. However one engine has dual start backplate so have roto and pull options. The other car has pull start with big fly wheel since I bought the starter box and used that a few times. Guess that means I can't give up the pullstart?

OWB- One way bearing- a bearing that turns freely in one direction and locks in the other.

So when we operate the roto the bearing locks and rotates the engine....when the engine starts the bearing turns freely.

Yes if you have a roto start backplate then you need the starter shaft and something to turn the shaft.
