Lipo Selection Help Please!

migga

Recommended Posts

I need advise on a 2S and 3S selection for my new Vaterra Halix 1/10 Monster Truck please!

540 Motor: 3300kV 4pole 250W

ESC: 70A constant, 290A peak

Max battery size: 158mm x 48mm x 35mm

They suggest/recommend 30C but I've been told going to a higher 'C' rating would be better???

I'm still relatively new to lipos and need some knowledgeable advise on my choice.

Higher C rating just means it can discharge faster, might make the car a little bit faster as well. I wouldn't go any lower than 30C, anything higher is just extra protection. A general rule is to get the highest C rating you can, it won't do any harm!

Hope this helps! :)

You need to apply some basic maths to ensure your lipo can provide the current required by the can, so ideally, well above the ESC basic amp rating:

For example, a 2000mah 30c pack can produce only 60a constant (2 x 30), whereas a 2000mah 40c would give 80a.

Appreciate that a low mah lipo would not be something most folk would choose, a good example of how to work out if your pack is going to deliver what it needs to ;)

One more thing Devon. Can you tell me from your Halix what the max dimensions of the battery compartment is so I can get a couple before it arrives?

Also would I have any probs with hardcase lipo wires coming out the top and being obstructed by the battery compartment lid?

I will post up the dimensions when i get the time and you should have no problems fitting the terminal leads for batteries through the lid as i use hard-case lipo to if you want i could post up a vid on hear showing how i put mine in if thats any help :)

Any standard 2s size battery packs will fit my friend :)

She's till a virgin.

Waiting on delivery of lipos and none of my local hobby stores have any lipos or connectors/plugs of the EC3 kind in stock!

Think I might just put deans plug on the car. Seems to be plenty of those lipos in store around here.

I live in Western Australia (W.A) aka....Wait Awhile :ack:

Only other lipos I got are TRX plugs for the revo So will change Halix plug to deans, get hard case lipo with deans and in the mean time take out the 4.6 Trophy to annoy some of the local BMX kids. :D

Let you know how I go once I get a chance to run it.

Gday Devin

Took Halix out for a quick spin on a 5200mAh 30C 2S (waiting on a 5600mAh 50C 2S) the other day. Very nice truck.

I'm going to put heavier oil in the shocks, prob 42.5wt I've got spare.

The motor ran cooI but I put a heatsink+fan on the motor cos even though it's fast I know it'll go faster with 3S!

Any suggestions on which (if any) pinion gear to change to so I can run 2S and 3S safely?

I looked at the gear chart in the manual and assume a 19T pinion, but too sure?

Hi bud good to hear your having a good time with it I would get a 19 18 and 17 tooth pinion. I would start with 18 tooth as it eliminates cogging without loosing to much speed hope this helps :)

Now I might sound stupid here but can you really just put the highest C rating in you want as long as the battery is over the rating of the ESC? I have always calculated the C to be at 30 or 40 and then added up the rest in MAH to get the value my ESC would need. So essentially along as the battery is over the ESC it doesn't matte how over it is? I was always afraid of blowing my electrics with an insane C rating....I feel like a right idiot. So I have a 70A ESC. I could run a 5900mah 60c battery pushing out 354A and it would still be fine, because the ESC only draws what I needs...HOW HAVE I NEVER NOTICED THIS? I feel like such and idiot.
